       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 27: Bro Zoned

       Arthit

       Shit, shit, shit.

I was so shocked I slammed on the brakes with all my might.

Since the car wasn’t going fast and we hadn’t left the house, there was no danger, but the main issue was what the short guy had just said.

    “…Are you serious?”

    “Yeah.”

“Fuck… damn, damn. No lies, I’ll knock you out if you’re lying.”

    “…Not lying.”

“Damn…so we start from zero now?”

    “Hmm.”

    “How much is full, zero?”

“Is there such a thing as full zero?” He asked in a flat tone, contrasting with my excited, impatient happiness that left me unable to do anything properly at the moment.

“There is, so does that mean you’re my boyfriend now?”

“Not yet. I just said we’re starting.”

“We can date in the meantime, right?”

    “No.”

“And how do we count the points? What’s the full score, is it five?”

“I don’t know, there might not be a fixed score like that.”

“So it depends on the feeling then.” I asked before slowly releasing the brake and stepping on the accelerator to move the car away from the house.

    “Uh-huh.”

“Damn, for real, I’m so damn happy.” I said according to my true feelings, this is awesome, starting to count points means opening your heart, right? Wow, he’s so handsome, I really don’t know what to say. If it’s not me, who else could make a robot open its heart? This is the best, right, Hia? Damn, I’m so happy, I’m so happy I can’t even go on anymore, “You’re so damn cute.”

I said with a grin, lightly pushing his head. He didn’t react at all, even though he should have shown some reaction more than me, but whatever, he’s just a lowbattery robot.

He said because I was sincere and trusted him, that’s why he opened up. Well, of course, who else would dare to give as much as I do, huh? Ha, in this whole universe, who could give as much as I do? Damn! Damn! It’s me, I’m the one who gives this much!!

“And how long do you think it’ll take before you date me?”

    “Don’t know.”

    “Depends on what I do?”

    “Yes.”

“I’m giving my all for you.”

    “Oh…uh-huh.”

“And will I get any special rights, like being able to kiss after six in the evening until five in the morning?” I asked because since it’s progressed to the next level, I should get some rights, right?

    “No.”

“What? Then can I at least hold your hand willingly?”

“Haven’t we been holding hands already?”

“I want it to be willing, like you reach out to hold my hand yourself.”

    “Can’t do that.”

    “Why?”

    “Because I’m not fully willing.”

“You’re so difficult.” I grumbled in frustration, “Fine, I’ll force you like before.”

    “Hmm.”

“Yeah, you know everything about me, can I get to know you a bit?”

    “No.”

“You answered without even thinking, think about it.”

    “No.”

    “Come on.”

“I don’t like others knowing my business.”

“I’m not ‘others’ anymore, am I? So, what am I to you?”

    “A senior I know.”

    “Damn, senior zoned.”

    “…”

“Yeah, so you know me as a senior, then you should be able to talk about yourself, right? You know everything about me. It’s not fair, where can I sue? Do I need to call a lawyer, or will we meet in court?”

    “…I’ll tell you.”

“Good, I like it when you play along. Let’s ask when we get back to the room.”

    “Hmm.”

And then I drove until we stopped under my condo, at the very end of the parking lot where I have my spot reserved. Of course, no one else is allowed to park here except for my cars, and this was now the fourth car parked here. I really want to know why a person like me drives four cars, it’s so wasteful, but if you ask if I like it, I do. I could change cars every day if I wanted to; there are plenty at home, but I only drive a few regularly, so I keep some here at the condo, just like Jo does. Hill and Fah, who aren’t into cars, only have two, with one as a spare.

I parked next to my beloved black McLaren, which is now falling out of favor because of this Bugatti I’m driving. Even though Direk said not to drive it casually, after the race, it’ll be mine anyway.

    “Do you like this car?”

    “Huh?”

“Do you like it, the new car?”

    “Mmm, good.”

“Compared to the old one, which do you like more?”

    “Why?”

“To be used for picking you up and dropping you off.”

    “Oh, either one is fine.”

“Pick the one you think is more comfortable.”

    “They’re the same.”

    “So whichever one then?”

    “Uh-huh.”

    “What about the motorcycle?”

“Isn’t it the same with the big bikes?” it said, which was true; I only have two big bikes, one as a spare. If you ask why I must have big bikes, it’s because they look good, and they match my height. Everyone in our group rides big bikes, even Fah, because if it’s not a big bike, our legs would be too long, so it has to be a large motorcycle to fit right.

“They’re different, different models, different brands.”

“Either one is fine, but I’d rather drive myself.” it said, and right now, I was thinking that one day, I would definitely puncture the tires of that motorcycle, that obstacle in my path of love, that damn bike.

I didn’t say anything, just got out of the car and took out Cat’s soft-boiled egg ghost’s belongings.

Speaking of which, what should I do with my snake? Cat and the snake probably shouldn’t live together…or should I try to let them meet first, maybe they could be friends, it’s better than nothing, my snake is expensive, damn.

We took the elevator up to my room and unlocked the door.

“Oh, what about the snake?” it asked first, “It’s pretty, but Mr. Jeon probably won’t like it.”

“Yeah, that’s true.” I agreed, putting down the things in my hand and walking over to pick up the snake’s box. Mr. Jeon immediately looked scared.

“Then should I go back to my room? So both the snake and a cat can be safe.”    “Do you think you can lure me with that?” I narrowed my eyes, “It’s not you who has to go back to your room, it’s my snake that has to stay in your room.”

    “…”

I picked up some dinner for the snake and put it in a box before leaving my room with the snake box in hand, the other holding the key card to the room next door. I unlocked the door, placed the snake box on the table, and then returned to my room. I saw the short guy playing with Cat on the floor.

“Why not sit on the sofa?”

    “No.”

“Why?” I asked as I sat down on the floor opposite him.

“Why don’t you sit on the sofa?” He countered with the same question.

“I’ve got my snake here, why would I go anywhere else?”

    “…”

“Where did you get Mr. Jeon from?” I asked, reaching over to play with Mr.

Jeon, who didn’t seem to mind my touch, confirming that Mr. Jeon really likes me.

“I picked him up from my old dorm, but they wouldn’t let me keep him.”

“Oh, so you moved because of him?”

    “Yes.”

“Are you Cupid or something?” I said playfully, teasing him. Then Mr. Jeon left the short guy’s lap to come lie on mine, which made him furrowed his brows in confusion, “He likes me more than you.”

“Mr. Jeon. No, come back to me.”

    “…”

“Mr. Jeon…do you like him more than me?”

“Now, Mr. Jeon, he’s being dramatic, what should we do?” I spoke to the black lump lying on my lap, completely unconcerned.

    “Phii…”

He called me in a soft voice, his brows slightly furrowed. I didn’t know what it meant, but for sure, I was completely lost, my mind in a mess.

    “…”

“Mr. Jeon, go back.” I said, but it still didn’t pay attention. Ha, you like me, I’m fine with it, but your owner, Cat, will be jealous.

“It’s okay, Mr. Jeon might be sleepy. Please put him on the bed.” He said before trying to stand up. So, I took the black ball and placed it on its bed as instructed by its owner.

“What are you going to do?”

    “Well…work.”

    “What work?”

“Designing a poster for a clothing store.”

    “Oh, can I see?”

“Is there nothing else for you to do?”

“There is, but I want to stay with you first.”

“Oh…uh-huh, can I use the desk?”

“Sure, go ahead.” I was allowed before he opened his computer, which was already on the desk. I dragged a chair over to sit beside him, watching him work like I had nothing else to do, but in reality, I had heaps of study sheets to read until my butt was practically on fire.

I saw him open a file with a poster.

    “Did you design this yourself?”

    “He gave a brief.”

    “Oh.”

    “How is it?”

“Are you asking for my opinion?”

“No, I am asking Mr. Jeon.”

    “Oh, then go ahead.”

“…I asked you, how can Mr. Jeon answer, are you crazy?”

“Oh. Normally, I see you talk to him.” I furrowed my brows, “If you’re asking me, I’d say it’s okay, but it’s not attractive enough, and what does the store need?”

    “They need a poster”

“Sorry, damn, I mean what kind of work do they want?”

“The shop has a promotion next month, they want a poster that makes people turn into the store when they see it.”

“Have one employee stand at the front and hit customers over the head to drag them in, it would be much easier. How could a poster make everyone who passes by turn in?”

“…Not attractive enough?” He said as if talking to himself, already ignoring my words, before starting to work on the poster. I sat there, chin on my knee, watching him from the side.

Why isn’t he losing focus, if it were me with someone staring like this, I’d have kicked them away by now, looking at him so intently, why not look at me instead, bastard?

    “Can we talk?”

    “Hmm.”

    “You’re not losing focus?”

“I can manage. Just need to adjust a bit.”

“Oh, why did you dye your hair blue?”

    “I wanted to.”

“I’ll dye mine too, to match you.”

    “Up to you.”

“Do you have any tattoos?” I asked, noticing a small part of a tattoo peeking out from under his sleeve.

    “A little.”

    “What do you have tattooed?”

“Things that represent my parents’ names, my grandma, stuff like that.”

“Oh…Can I ask about your family?”

“Hmm, sure. I know everything about yours, consider it an exchange.”    “Damn, who was the tall English guy in your room that day?” I asked, my voice unintentionally showing some annoyance. He paused slightly before slowly turning to look at me.

    “In the room?”

“The tall Englishman you called ‘Daddy’.”

    “It’s ‘dad’ then.”

    “…Your father?”

“No. Not him, my father is someone else.”

    “…”

I inadvertently clenched my fist upon hearing that answer.

    “Break up with him.”

    “Huh?”

    “Stop messing with him.”

I spoke with a firm tone and a serious expression without realizing it, and then anger started to surge within me, so much so that the person sitting next to me looked confused and moved away slightly.

    “Don’t run away.”

    “…”

    “Don’t go away from me.”

I sighed to calm myself down.

“Sorry, why call him ‘dad’ if he’s not your father?”

I asked after cooling myself down a bit, trying not to show my anger. The person I asked furrowed his brows before looking like he remembered something.

    “Oh, there’s a misunderstanding.”

    “What?”

    “He’s my papa’s husband.”

    “…Oh.”

“So I call him ‘Dad’. Not in the way you thought.”

    “Oh, uh, okay.”

I sighed again, and now the anger was quickly fading away. Why did I get so mad before even getting an answer? I know I have a temper, but I didn’t think it was this bad, to the point where I didn’t even wait to hear him out.

       “Are you scared?”

I asked while gently patting his head.

    He nodded.

“But you know I won’t do anything to you.”

    “Won’t go that far.”

“What if it’s like what you think?”

“Are you trying to test my heart?”

    “Yes.”

“That’s not the answer you want to hear.”

“Are you going to kill Daddy?”

“Why do you think I’d kill him, that’s too much.” I furrowed my brows, a small laugh escaping because of how serious he looked.

“You’d definitely do it, tie him up, burn him, or cement his feet and throw him into the water, or feed him to sharks or crocodiles.”

“I’m not a mafia, damn it.”

    “So you can’t do it?”

“I can.” I answered truthfully, “I can have someone else do it, even erase his record.”

    “Oh…I see.”

“But if it really happened, I wouldn’t know what to do. I’d be angry first, but then I’d figure out what to do next.”

“If I was dating someone else from the start, I would have told you already. I wouldn’t let you hover around like this.”

“What if it was a secret that someone else was there already?”

“Oh…hmm, then what would you do?”

“I don’t know, just forget it.” I said to close the topic. Because if the short guy really did have someone from the start and kept it a secret, I wouldn’t know what to do either. “But I’d want you to choose me.”

“Like, break up with him and then date you?”

    “Yes.”

    “It’s wrong, you know.”

“Who cares? I have to fight even if it was the other man.”

    “Oh…uh-huh.”

“Papa is really your dad, and that person is your dad’s new partner, which means your parents are divorced?”

    “Yes.”

“Why did they break up? Can I ask?”

“Uh-huh. They just didn’t love each other anymore, that’s all.”

    “Are you okay with it?”

“I’m okay, they’re just ordinary people. They had love, but that love hit a dead end like anyone else.”

“Yeah, good, so you live with your Papa and your Dad now?”

    “Yes.”

“What are your Papa and Dad’s names? So I can get to know them.”

“Papa’s name is Pai, Dad’s name is Gavin.”

“Oh, uh-huh, I’ll have Direk arrange the dowry in advance then.” I said, and of course, I wasn’t joking, there will come a day when Direk has to make contact.

    “No, thanks.”

“Why not? You could get a billion if you want.”

    “Your money?”

“My dad’s money, where would I get a billion from?”

“…” He didn’t answer and turned back to his work. I took advantage of him being focused on work to gently pinch his cheek with a grin, “What are you doing?” He asked while letting me play with his cheek like that.

“It’s soft, can I kiss it?”

    “No.”

“Really?” I answered that before leaning in and pressing my lips to his soft cheek, ignoring the previous refusal. He was slightly startled before moving his chair away. This time, I caught the chair immediately, “I told you not to move away from me.”

    “Why?”

    “Don’t like it.”

    “Sigh.”

“You look tired being with me.”

    “Yeah.”

“That’s bad, just a little tired, keep fighting.”

    “…Hmm.”

“And what about your future dream?”

    “Oh…to make Mr. Jeon happy.”

“Damn, say something you want to do, like a career or something.”

“I want to open my own gallery.”

“Oh…that’s fitting, where would you open it?”

    “I don’t know yet.”

    “Wait…what are you studying again?”

    “Biology.”

    “What, why not study art?”

    “I like biology.”

    “Oh, I see.”

“You can study art outside of school, but not biology. Many things are only taught in specific departments.”

“Oh…yeah. What will you do with the biology you’ve studied once you graduate?”

    “I might…draw microorganisms more accurately.”

“…” His answer left me speechless. Draw microorganisms…what is that,

    “Seriously?”

“I might do something related to biology, after all, I’ve studied it for years, and I’ll have to do an internship too.”

“Then would you be interested in forming a band with me? You play guitar.”

“No, thanks, I only play a little.”

“And what about drums, are you still interested?”

“Oh, I am. If I have free time, I’ll go learn.”

    “I’ll teach you for free.”

    “Really?”

“I don’t want to brag, but I’m really good at drums, you know, you’d be my first student.” I bragged while raising my eyebrows, “When you have time, I’ll take you to the practice room.”

    “Oh…uh-huh. We’ll see.”

“Cool.” I shrugged, still sitting with my chin propped on my hand, watching from the side. While we were talking, I kept touching him, pinching his cheek, grabbing his arm; I don’t know why, but I had to look closely, had to touch. I didn’t understand myself either. And he didn’t say anything; he must have given up on me because resisting was pointless, and he couldn’t overpower me. Sigh, it’s pitiful.

“I just realized how jealous I am of you.” I said, thinking back to a few minutes ago when I suddenly got so angry I couldn’t control my tone or my expression. Normally, I don’t bother to control it, but this time, my emotions flared up so quickly.

    “Actually…you can’t be jealous.”

    “Yes, I can.”

    “No, you can’t.”

    “I must be.”

    “You can’t.”

    “I said I can, so I can. Why can’t I?”

    “We’re not dating.”

    “Then let’s date.”

    “You’re so self-centered.”

    “Only for you.”

    “…”

“Oh, can’t speak, huh? You’re embarrassed.”

“No. Not embarrassed, just genuinely shocked.” He said with a sigh.

“How many points for that kiss earlier?”

    “Zero.”

    “What, at least one.”

    “No.”

“Zero point five, I tried to flirt with you, damn it.”

    “No.”

“You’re so complicated.” I grumbled in frustration before reaching out to play with his hair, the blue strands that were quite standout compared to others’ hair color and importantly, they were soft, “This is just how I am. That’s why I said you’ve got a lot of karma, but don’t worry, you can extend your compassion to me.”

“Will you leave after I do?”

“No.” I answered, “Then let me give you one piece of advice.”

    “What?”

“Don’t mess with anyone, and don’t let any bastard mess with you. You wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt, right?”

    “Are you threatening me?”

“Yeah, let’s say it’s a threat at this point.”

    “Hmm.”

    “Hmm means?”

    “I understand.”

“You’re not objecting at all, I’ll get full of myself, you know.”

    “Then get full of yourself.”

    “…Damn.”

       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 26: Zero, point

       Daotok

       (Present)

From a distance, I could see the sleek black car parked, standing out against all the others around it, both in shape and shade. Of course, that includes the price. No need to ask why, but I was sure the owner of that car was the one currently holding my shoulder.

In the few minutes it took me to walk from here to where the car was parked, three people had already stopped to take pictures of it. Once I stood in front of this beautiful black car, I immediately felt more eyes on me than usual.

The warm hand on my shoulder relaxed as he moved away, taking the warmth of his body with him. He returned my phone and earphones before walking over to the driver’s side, and at that moment, I decided to say what I had been thinking since I first saw the car.

“Uh, could I ask for a favor, please?”

    “What?”

“Could you go pick up Mr. Jeon for me?”

“You mean this?” He said, opening the door. I walked over, confused, and saw a mysterious black round object on the passenger seat; Mr. Jeon was curled up, then he lifted his yellow eyes to look at me. I rushed to pick him up without even thinking.

“You’ve already picked him up?” I asked, happy even though my face didn’t show it, starting to hug Mr. Jeon tightly and nuzzle him until the familiar scent filled my nose.

    “Surprised, huh?”

“Hmm.” I nodded, turning to look at the person standing behind, only then noticing that the car window was slightly down, probably so Mr. Jeon could wait in the car.

    “How much?”

    “Hmm?”

“Points, I mean. If I successfully woo you, I get 101, right? How many for this?”

    “Uh…um. Not possible.”

    “Oh.”

“Why should I put up with traffic to pick him up from Fah’s room? If I knew this, I would have waited for Fah to be free on Sunday and let you wait for Fah to bring him.” He grumbled while reaching into his pants pocket, looking very annoyed.

    “I feel grateful.”

    “And where’s the thank you?”

    “Thank you.”

    “Thank who?”

    “Thank you, Phii Arthit.”

    “Smile.”

“Do I have to smile too?”

    “Yeah.”

I slowly gave a slight smile to the person in front of me.

“Yeah, that’s a bit more pleasing. And about the score, can’t you even give me one point?”

“None.” I shook my head gently. He shrugged as if to say, ‘then whatever,’ before walking around to open the driver’s door and getting into the car. I followed, still holding Mr. Jeon in my arms. He started the engine, and the beautiful black car slowly moved away from the water reservoir.

This car must have been newly bought, probably very expensive, and of course, with the high price comes a powerful engine that can accelerate quickly. However, it’s a pity that this car, capable of reaching speeds up to 400 kilometers per hour, couldn’t be driven out of the parking area due to the traffic. The driver also looked very annoyed.

“My dad invited us to eat at home.”

    “…”

“You can’t refuse, don’t even think about it.”

    “Oh…why invite?”

“I told him I like you, so he invited me.”

    “Oh.”

Although he said I couldn’t refuse, if an elder makes such an invitation, I wouldn’t refuse anyway.

Even with the road ahead packed with cars, having Mr. Jeon in my embrace made everything feel more relaxed, along with the sound of my playlist playing.    Since the car couldn’t move and it looked like it would take a while, the driver handed me his phone. I took it, puzzled.

    “Hand.”

    “?”

    “Give me your hand.”

He spoke as if he was commanding. I hesitated but extended my hand; I didn’t like or was used to it at first, but as he held my hand more often, I got used to it, and this time I didn’t feel bad about it anymore.

It’s quite scary to let yourself get used to someone’s touch, but what can you do when you can’t refuse? Even if I didn’t let him hold my hand now, he would keep at it anyway.

And I didn’t feel strange about holding hands with him anymore; this is something I need to think about.

“Traffic like this is stressful, you know.” He said while gently playing with my hand, playing here meaning changing how he held it, interlocking fingers, moving them around, “I damn hate traffic, but I think now it’s okay.”

    “You’re flirting a lot.”

“Well, of course, I’m trying to woo you.” He said, “Use my phone to take a picture.”

    “Picture of what?”

    “Our hands holding each other.”

    “No.”

    “Take it.”

    “…Hmm.”

I let go of Mr. Jeon to let him lie on my lap, his phone wasn’t locked, and the wallpaper was solid black. I went into the camera app and took a picture of our hands together. Of course, it captured the car’s gear area in the background.

“Let’s see how it looks.” He said. So I showed him the picture, “Super couple.”

    “We’re not.”

“Come on, post it on Instagram too.”

“Sigh.” I inadvertently let out a sigh, “Everyone will misunderstand.”

    “Why?”

    “You are not my boyfriend.”

“They don’t even know who you are, but if you want them to know, just tag yourself.”

    “Do you have Instagram?”

“Isn’t it the one where you post your drawings?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“I just followed you. Didn’t see it.”

    “I didn’t check that.”

    “Follow me back.”

    “Do I have to?”

“Yeah, follow, come on, I’m this good-looking.”

    “…”

“Have you posted the picture yet?”

    “Not yet.”

“Post it then.” He said. I was still stuck on his Instagram page, which had nearly a hundred thousand followers. My drawing Instagram account had around thirty thousand. I think I have some recognition in the drawing community, but he’s very famous, just like North used to brag about.

Can’t help it, his pictures are really good, his looks, physique, and the places he visits, all of it.

Even if I don’t post, he probably would anyway, unless I delete the picture.

“If you don’t post, I can’t guarantee your safety for the next three nights.”

    “What should the caption be?”

“Green light.” He burst out laughing, “Just one heart icon, red, is enough.”    “Hmm.” and then I posted the picture of our hands holding each other that I had just taken on Instagram with a red heart caption as he instructed. Likes started coming in almost immediately. I locked the phone and handed it back to him, but the light turned green, so I kept it with me for now.

He let go of my hand to shift gears. I then placed my hand back on Mr. Jeon.

“What, as soon as I let go, you grab Cat’s hand, is it a male?”

    “Yeah.”

“Jealous, I’ll eat him up later.”

“Don’t do that to Mr. Jeon.”

“He won’t survive, I’ve already grabbed his balls once.”

    “Mean.”

“But he seems to like me.”

“Mr. Jeon can tell who loves him.”

“It’s me, I love him, I love you too, love you lots, yeah?”

    “…”

    “You’re quiet, are you embarrassed?”

“It’s weird to hear ‘I love you’.”

“It’s good, keep it. You won’t hear it from anyone else for sure.”

He turned into the garage at the front of the house instead of going around to the back because he was too lazy to drive around. As soon as we got out, the maid came to take Cat, the short guy’s cat, to look after it, since bringing Cat inside might not be a good idea. The owner handed Cat over willingly, as if knowing what to do.

This Cat is almost exactly like its owner. Not stubborn, not mischievous, doesn’t scratch, stays calm. Anyone can pick him up, and when I playfully poked at his balls, he just looked at me with a bored expression.

After a while, Direk came in with a warm, friendly smile. In the eyes of most people, Direk would be seen as a nice, warm, good-hearted uncle. He looks dignified and trustworthy, just like how a CEO should be. But when with me, he has another side. It wouldn’t be right to call it his true self because one should know how to behave depending on who they’re with, something Direk says.    The person beside me raised my hand in a respectful gesture, and Direk returned the gesture.

“Surprised that I suddenly invited you, huh?”

    “Yes, sir.”

“I was just surprised that Arthit told me about it. I’ve been with him for over twenty years and that was the first time I heard him say something like this. I guess

I was a bit excited, understand?”

    “Yes, sir.”

    “Come on in.”

And then Direk led us into the house. The dining table was set with all sorts of dishes, just like every time I come back to eat at home. Normally, if Direk is alone, he’d eat with the house staff in the kitchen, being a very chill employer, which is great. And of course, I’ve inherited this laid-back nature from him; no need to say where I got it from, but let’s just say I got everything from Direk.

If you ask why I decided to bring this little guy here without any objections, even though Direk invited him because he was excited, the answer is that I wanted him to meet Direk. Direk is my only family, and my friends all know him. The one thing about me he hasn’t met yet is my family. I just want him to see everything in my life, without hiding anything, to know that this is all there is to me, nothing more.

Direk might have thought the same since, after over twenty years together, he knows me best. He probably knew that if I told him I liked someone, that person must be the last one in my life, so Direk took it seriously too.    When we sat down at the dining table, Direk immediately started the conversation.

“I can’t ask how you got together because you’re not together yet. Arthit is courting you, right?”

    “…He said so, yes.”

“Are you okay with it? This one isn’t like normal people, it’s quite troublesome. I apologize on behalf of my son, he’s quite selfish and has a bad temper, with a foul mouth too.”

“Oh, why the sudden criticism?” I interjected.

“Why? I’m telling the truth.” Direk said before turning to ask the person sitting next to me, “Does Arthit speak rudely to you?”

“He speaks well.” I answered him.

    “How rude is he?”

    “Just normal.”

“Wow…and how does he put up with you? Friends are one thing, but you’re courting him, and you’re rude to him.” Direk looked stunned.

“I’m not asking you, I’m asking him, are you tired of having Arthit following you around?”

    “Not tired, but annoyed, sir.”

“Wow, so straightforward.” Direk looked slightly taken aback, “Tears are falling.”

“It’s nothing, I’ve dealt with worse, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Use your time for something else, why don’t you like someone else? Give up, get over it. I don’t like you, brother.”

“Oh, my poor son, you’ve been beaten like a dog.”

“Not a dog, really being a dog would be against our agreement.”

    “What agreement?”

“That he wont be with anyone for life. So I’ll stay with him since that was his own decision to never have a boyfriend for life.”

“Oh. So that works in your favor?”

    “Yes.”

“Oh, and why don’t you want anyone for life?”

“I just don’t want anyone, sir.”

“You don’t want this bastard either, right?”

    “Yes, sir.”

    “Arthit…You’re still so shameless.”

“Well, I want to be with him, why?”

“You’re so damn selfish.” Direk laughed again, “Okay, okay, it’s good. If it’s not too much trouble, I’d like you to open your heart. He’s my son, after all, I have to support him. He might be rough, but he doesn’t deceive people. He’s straightforwardly honest, in a foolish way.”

“Oh, I see, sir. I know he doesn’t deceive people.” the person next to me said in a calm tone.

“Knowing me this well, why not be my boyfriend?”    “Damn, really?” Direk asked.

“Absolutely, I ask him to be my boyfriend ten times a day, there’s got to be one time he nods without thinking.” I said, genuinely thinking that, like it’s a play on his inattention. I noticed the short guy starting to frown, deep in thought, “You must be thinking you need to be careful now, right?”

“Hmm. I’ll be careful not to nod or respond to anything.”

“We agreed that since he would be alone for life, I would stay with him. It’s his own intention to never have a partner for life.”

“Oh. So it plays into your hands?”

    “Yes.”

“Oh, why don’t you want anyone for life then?”

    “I just don’t want anyone.”

“You don’t want this bastard too, right?”

    “Yes.”

    “You’re still so shameless.”

“Come on, I just want to be with him, why?”

“You’re so damn selfish.” Direk burst out laughing again, “Good, good. If it’s not too troublesome, I’d like you to open your heart. He’s my son, you know, I have to support him. He might be rude, but he doesn’t deceive people. He’s straightforwardly honest, like a fool.”

“I understand he doesn’t deceive people.” Said the person next to me with a calm tone.

“Since you know me so well, just be my partner.”    “Damn, can you?” Direk asked.

“You can be my partner ten times a day; there must be one time when you nod in agreement by mistake.” I said according to my thoughts, I genuinely think this way, like playing a trick. I noticed the little guy starting to furrow his brows, looking thoughtful, “You must be thinking you need to be careful, right?”

“Uh-huh. I’ll be careful not to nod or answer anything.”

    “Hahaha, yeah, be very careful.”

“You two are quite strange.” Direk said, shaking his head slightly, then he asked the little guy about his studies or work. I listened while playing with my phone, not inserting myself into the mundane conversation.

I opened Instagram to check if the little guy had posted the picture with the caption I told him to use, and indeed he had. That made me smile with satisfaction. I knew he was a real fan, too bad no one knows who he is yet, but whatever, I’ll wait a bit longer and take a sneaky photo of him to post later, claiming him in the process.

I’ve said his hands are very small, but they’re not that soft because they’re his dominant hand for drawing, and they fit perfectly in mine.

“You did well in school, huh? Arthit in high school was nothing like that, he was quite the troublemaker.”

    “What are you gossiping about?”

“Look up from your screen for once, I’m telling him how much of a delinquent you were in high school. And you haven’t changed much, have you?”    “Normal.” I shrugged, unconcerned.

“Have you told him about your band?”

“Not yet, forget about it, I’ll tell him later.”

“Okay, okay. So, is your major tough? What subject are you studying again?”

“Biology, sir. It’s okay for me, not too hard.”

“You still have time for work, but if you overdo it, as you get older, you’ll really feel how your body isn’t up to it.”

    “Yes, sir.”

“Do you have any of your work to show? If I like something, I’ll buy a piece or two to hang at home.”

“What kind of work do you like, sir?”

“I like acrylic on canvas. If the colors are vibrant, I like it even more.”

“I’ve done that before.” the short guy said before showing him a picture. I leaned in to look too; it was a canvas with bold, full colors.

“Wow, I like this one, is this piece still available?”

“It’s sold, actually, this was a commissioned piece.”

    “Then I’ll commission one too.”

“Yes, sir, but it’ll be next month before I can start painting.”

“Oh, that’s fine, I can wait. Let me see some other pieces.”

“Yes, sir.” and then he handed his phone to Direk to look at the other pictures. I felt a bit proud for some reason that Direk liked the short guy’s work. At first, Direk had said he wasn’t that into art, but since his mother loved it, he grew to like it too, which is why he has quite a collection of art pieces.

And since the short guy’s canvas work was exactly the style Direk likes, it’s even better.

“Oh, you still have my work?”

“What work?” Direk asked, his eyes still focused on the screen.

“The painting that mom didn’t finish coloring, I asked him to color it.” I said. Upon hearing this, Direk immediately looked up, “To make it complete as she intended.”

“Really?” He turned to ask the little guy instead.

“Yes. I’m trying my best to make it as close to what your mother did.”

“Oh…uh, I see, since you’ve decided, I won’t say anything. Thank you, and when it’s done, show it to me.”

    “Yes, sir.”

Direk smiled warmly. I could tell that the person sitting across from me was happy about what I had just said; the painting my mother created would be completed with someone’s full effort.

I turned to look at Dao, who was watching Direk look at his own work, before he realized I was watching him and turned to look back in confusion.

It’s another time I felt grateful to him; having you in my life has brought only good things.

After looking at the picture and being satisfied, Direk handed the phone back.

       “I like it.”

“What?” I asked when Direk suddenly said he liked something.

“I really like this daughter-in-law, you’ve chosen well, Arthit.”

“…” Dao looked like he wanted to argue but didn’t say anything. I smiled secretly at that reaction.

“Right? So, how about it? Should I propose right away?”

“Alright, do it. I’ll tell someone to find an auspicious date, and I’ll go to Italy to get my suit tailored.”

“Does it have to be that far? But can I choose the venue?”

    “Where do you want it?”

“I want it at Suvarnabhumi Airport, where people coming in and out of the country have to stop because of me alone. It’ll be a huge hassle for everyone, I want to try it, have a wedding where people throw bottles of water and shout.”    “Damn, why would you do something like that there? And what about your groom’s outfit, what fabric do you want? How about dog leather?”

“Let’s write your name on it.”

“And your outfits, do you want any particular theme? Where do you want to hold the event, when will you be ready, when will our parents be ready to talk about this, we can set a date if you want, I’ll make time, I don’t care about the dowry as long as you take my son as another burden in your life.”

    “…”

“Look, my dad said all this and you still don’t say anything?”    “…No.”

Its soft refusal made both me and Direk burst out laughing.

“Let’s be family, I really like you.”

    “…Thank you, sir.”

Well, now you’ve even got my dad to like you, huh? You’ve done well to make this house like you.

“I’m just kidding, don’t think too much about it, but I’m serious about the artwork. I’ll have my secretary contact you, I won’t be very free next month.”

    “Thank you, sir.”

And the playful conversation at the table continued for a while until we finished eating. We planned to leave, and Direk walked us to the front of the house.

    “See you again.”

“Yes, sir, take care of your health, please.”

    “Hmm. Good luck.”

    “See you later, Direk.”

“Yeah, drive carefully, take care of him so he doesn’t faint.” “Got it.”

I answered dismissively before we walked back to the car. The maid brought Cat back, and he took the black Cat into his arms before opening the car door.    Even though Direk said not to use this car casually, right now Cat and his stuff were in the back seat, so we’d change it when we had the time. As for the motorcycle, I left it here since I have another spare parked at the condo.

“How was it?” I asked immediately after we started driving.

    “It was good.”

    “Not uncomfortable?”

    “Not at all.”

“My dad is like this when he’s with me. Are you okay with it?”

    “Uh-huh.”

    “Really? That’s good then.”

“Why did you bring me there?”

    “Huh?”

    “Why bring me there when…”

“Oh, why ask now?” I said, “You didn’t ask before we went there.”

    “I forgot.”

“Oh, yeah. Here’s why, I want you to see everything about me as it truly is. This is my dad, my family, that’s all there is. I haven’t hidden anything from you, if anyone says I’m not serious about you, I’ll kick them in the face.”

    “Oh…uh, but…”

    “But what?”

    “About the band.”

“Oh. That was the high school band.” I said, “I don’t usually tell people about this, but I said I wouldn’t keep any secrets from you. You know I play drums, right?”

    “Uh-huh.”

    “I want to do music.”

    “…”

“I mean, that’s my real dream. If we don’t count studying medicine because of my mom, I have loved playing drums, playing guitar since I was little. Then, in high school, I came to Thailand, but during the holidays, I’d go back to San Francisco and make music with friends, which got quite popular in the city. But then I had to come back to Thailand often.”

    “Oh, that’s too bad.”

    “Yeah.”

“Why did you choose to study medicine?”

“As a kid, I promised my mom I’d be a doctor to take care of her, it’s kind of stuck with me.”

“If you can fulfill what you promised, would you go back to making music?”

    “I don’t know. It’s been a while since I did that.”

    “Oh.”

“What about you? If I make music, would you be interested in being the guitarist?”

    “I don’t know.”

“If you were the guitarist, I’d be tempted to give it another go.” I said, turning to raise an eyebrow at him. He looked back with the same indifferent expression,

“The others probably won’t come back to it, we’ve all gone our separate ways.”

    “Oh, I see.”

“You, huh? You’re asking me, but you don’t seem interested at all.”

    “I want to try listening.”

    “To what?”

    “To the music you’ve made.”

“Look for it on my phone, it’s named ‘My Songs’.” I said. My phone was already in the car because I had used it to play music. The old songs I had made started to play, and it felt weird, indescribable. Not right, like I was being pulled back into the past.

    “You play drums?”

    “Yeah, I do.”

    “I like it.”

    “You like me?”

    “The drum rhythm.”

    “It’s never off-beat.”

    “Hmm.”

    “Who made this song?”

    “Mostly me.”

    “Ah…you’re really good.”

“Just complimenting me, but yeah, thanks.” I said before going quiet to listen to the song until it ended, then I switched to the next one, going through all three songs, “Now, give me your comment.”

“It’s really beautiful, I want to hear more songs. If you were some artist, I’d probably tell you to go back to making music.”

“Ha, you…” I shook my head slightly, smiling involuntarily, feeling my heart swell for no reason, “Be my guitarist.”

“You want me to be your guitarist?”

    “Yeah. I just said so.”

    “Thank you.”

    “Why thank me?”

    “It’s a great honor.”

“Damn, why suddenly…what’s it called, formal? And why the honor?”

“Great musicians have to choose, right?”

“No, I just like you, so I chose you.”

    “…Then no.”

“Kidding, I really like your guitar playing. If I ever go back to making music, I’d want you to be my guitarist.”

“Uh-huh.” He nodded slowly, petting Cat’s ghost at the same time, “Thank you.”

“What else? Are you the national thank-you champion or something?”

    “For being serious.”

    “Huh?”

“Thank you for being serious with me.”

    “…”

“Not everyone would trust someone this much, bringing them to your home and saying you want them to see everything about you means you trust and are serious about me, right? There’s nothing you’re hiding from me anymore, not even stories from your past you didn’t want to tell or dreams you never shared with anyone.”

“Really, you sound like you’re about to open your heart to me.”

    “…Really?”

    “Yeah, sure.”

“…Then I will give you zero points.”

    “What?”

“Zero from nothing in the beginning.”

    “What does that mean?”

“From now on, we’ll start counting points.”

       Daotok

“See, there might be a lot of people sending you songs, but no one does it like I do according to the song.” He said with a tone of pride in himself.

“You mean climbing mountains and crossing oceans?”

    “Yes.”

He answered while still not letting go of my hand, tracing his fingers along my fingertips, palm, and the back of my hand. I instinctively pulled my hand back when I felt something strange, but like before, he didn’t let go.

“I can hear your heart beating like crazy.”

    “Really?”

    “And it is, right?”

    “…uh-huh.”

I answered softly because, as everyone knows, I’m not one to lie, and since my heart was indeed beating fast, I couldn’t say it wasn’t.

“Really?” He jumped up immediately upon hearing that, looking both surprised and openly happy. I turned to look at the person sitting next to me; his hand still held mine, and in the dim light, his sharp features became even more pronounced, making me realize once again:

    He really has beautiful eyes…

“Uh-huh.” I pressed my lips together slightly to force out a response, so quiet that even I could barely hear it.

“Does that mean I’m getting closer?”

“I don’t know.” I answered according to my thoughts. I genuinely didn’t know what this fast heartbeat meant, whether it was from being moved or just not used to someone doing this to me.

“Oh, well then.” He said, “Whatever the reason for the heartbeat, I have some influence on your heart.”

Before he slowly pulled me up to stand, our earphones were still playing the same song on repeat for the second time. My phone was on his other hand, so I couldn’t change the song. He gently pulled my hand, leading me to walk with him.

On the way, many people watched us. I thought it was probably because the person walking beside me was too conspicuous, and another reason was that he was holding my hand.

I wanted to let go but couldn’t, so I just went with it, not surprised if some people were displeased. From what North often bragged about, he has a lot of fans.    I didn’t pay attention to those looks, just glancing at the water reservoir with the sunset view.

       “Your friends know, right?”

    “About what?”

    “That I like you.”

    “Hmm.”

“What did they say, let’s see. Who’s on my team?”

    “North.”

“Of course. Anyone else, like Hill’s wife and Fah?”

    “Doesn’t seem like it.”

    “Why?”

    “Don’t know.”

    “And did they say anything?”

“They said if you don’t do well, they’ll tell on you to your partner.”

“Oh~” He drew out the sound, “You fit right in, huh? All my wife’s friends are just right, why is it so coincidental or are you guys playing around? Did you hear from North that you’re a fortune teller too?”

    “Just reading fortunes.”

“Normally, I don’t believe in fortunes, but if you can read them, it’s interesting.

    Come on, read mine.”

    “No.”

    “Why not?”

    “Lazy.”

    “Then how about tonight?”

    “…”

Once again, and I was sure it wouldn’t be the last time, my voice didn’t reach him.

He let go of my hand and instead wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me closer. I was slightly surprised by the sudden pull.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something; turning, I noticed a group of about two or three women hurriedly putting away their phones. It wasn’t hard to guess what had just happened. They must have been taking photos of us before getting caught and quickly hiding their phones. I didn’t show any particular expression, just turned back to look forward as if I hadn’t seen anything at all.

“It’s a bit troublesome, being famous.”

“Will I get ambushed?” I asked out of curiosity, like when I was dating my ex, North had complained about being picked on. If I got the same treatment, it would mean the guy next door was bringing trouble to me…not good at all, as if he was bringing bad luck when I was living peacefully on my own.

    “Ambushed to fight?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“No, but you might get ambushed in bed.”

    “…”

“Kidding. There won’t be anything like that, but aren’t you a taekwondo brown belt? What are you afraid of?”

“Why should I risk getting hurt because of you?”

“There’s nothing, except maybe a little gossip, but you don’t care about others, right?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“Yeah, I like that about you too.”

“Is there anything you don’t like?” I asked.

“Why? Are you going to change it?”

    “I might do it more.”

I said, which made the person next to me laugh. Walking while being held by the shoulder made it less comfortable to walk, and frankly, walking like this with someone’s arm around you would draw attention, but those many gazes didn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

And being this close, I could smell a faint scent. I didn’t want to admit it, but since I’ve been spending a lot of time with him, I’ve started to get used to his scent.

    “Nothing.” He answered.

    “That’s impossible.”

    “Why?”

“There must be something you don’t like about a person.”

“Really? Then tell me your flaws.”

“There’s nothing worse than what you see.”

“Damn.” He laughed again, “just like the person I like, you bastard.”    He didn’t stop laughing for a while, what I said was the truth. I don’t keep anything hidden; all the pros and cons are visible to anyone I’m with. Everything I express is genuine; I’ve never tried to change it, it’s all my true nature.

       He stopped laughing and said,

“That’s what makes me like you. You’re not fake, you don’t embellish, you’re so natural, you are who you are without trying, you speak little and don’t lie, sometimes you’re snarky, you act indifferent or whatever.”

    “Oh.”

“And will you try to do it more? Don’t you want me to stop liking you? Try talking more or acting differently.”

    “Can’t do it.”

“See, that’s what I mean, but I won’t ask what you don’t like about me.”

    “Why?”

    “You’d definitely say everything.”

    “No, I won’t.”

“Really? So, what do you like?”

    “You’re natural, too.”

    “You’re clearly copying me.”

“No, I mean it.” I said before looking at the person who seemed not quite ready to believe me, “I don’t lie, I can feel your sincerity.”

    “…Oh.”

“Even if I don’t really want to be around you much, when I am, I feel at ease.”

“Wait, I wasn’t prepared for this, is this a confession of love?”

“No, it’s like my mind feels at ease, similar to when I’m with North, but you’re much more annoying…a lot more.”

“You’re harsh. If it weren’t me, someone would be crying like a dog with each word you say, but it’s good that it’s me, the one who can withstand any weather.

Even if you say you hate me, it won’t hurt.”

    “I hate you.”

I tried saying what he had challenged, but he went silent for a moment.

“Really?” He asked with a serious expression.

“No. I don’t hate you that much.”

    “…”

“Then let’s skip this word, I think it’s fine.” the person next to me seemed somewhat displeased, “That really stings, bastard, it’s the first time I’ve felt this, wow, it’s impressive as hell even though it’s just words.”

    “…”

    “Try it again.”

    “…I hate you.”

“Ow, that hurts. Don’t say that, don’t ever say that. If you say it, I’ll…uh, I’ll break your pencil.”

    “Mean.”

“That one doesn’t hurt. So, let’s agree not to say it. This is another rule of our agreement: you’re not allowed to say you hate me, even if you truly do. Keep it in your heart, don’t show it, okay?”

    “…Alright.”

    Arthit

       ABOUT TWO HOURS EARLIER

After finishing the evening ward rounds, I walked down from the building with Jo. We were complaining about the ward rounds we just did when I got a call on my phone. I picked it up to see it was Direk, which was quite surprising since Direk doesn’t usually call at this time.

“What’s up?” I answered the call with my usual greeting.

    (Come to my house.)

       “Huh?”

    (Come to my house first.)

       “Why?”

    (Heh, there’s a surprise.)

       “I think I have a bigger surprise.”

    (What’s that?)

“I’ll tell you when I get there.”

    (Yeah, yeah, hurry up.)

       “Ke.”

And then I hung up the call. What Direk called a surprise, I had somewhat guessed, but what would surprise Direk, he definitely wouldn’t guess.

I planned to tell him about how I was flirting with that short guy. I hadn’t told Direk from the start because I was afraid it might give him a heart attack, especially at his age. But now, it seemed like the right time to tell him.

Me and Jo reached the motorcycle parking spot before we parted ways. I headed towards Direk’s house, which didn’t take long since I finished work early and there was little traffic. I parked my bike inside the house before Direk came out.

“Why are you off work so early?” I asked as I took off my helmet.

“I’m taking a break today.” Direk said, “I think a lab coat and a big bike look oddly good together.”

    “Really? But it’s uncomfortable.”

    “You must have gained weight.”

“Damn, seriously?” I asked with a serious face, the idea of gaining weight was something I couldn’t accept. Direk chuckled a bit, so I made a face showing my frustration.

“You’re really serious about this, come on, let’s look at my surprise first.” Direk said before walking into the house. I took off my shoes and followed, walking through the garden to the garage on the side of the house, which had multiple parking spots because there are many cars. Just mine alone, I think I have five or six, not to mention the ones I keep buying.

I was stunned when I saw a sleek black car parked quietly in the garage.

    “Damn, are you serious?”

“You knew I had to buy you a new car, but I knew you’d be stunned seeing this one.” Direk smiled like a winner and gently patted the car’s hood.

“Shit.” I was still in shock, moving closer to look, “Can I ask about the price?”

    “Over a hundred.”

“Damn, you bought it for me?”

“Not for you to drive around casually, it’s for you to race next month.” He said, sitting down on a chair with a relaxed posture, “The one you just crashed is still good, but I want to make sure you win, so I bought this as a prize in advance.”    “Wow, are you trying to kill me with a car this fast?” I said, grinning so wide it almost split my face. It’s like he’s trying to kill me because this thing is incredibly fast, if you drive it badly, you’re not surviving, but it’s me we’re talking about,

    “Victory is in my hands.”

“Then you better practice, the race is next month. This time, it’s serious.”    “Who are we racing against?” I asked. If this was serious, it meant company shares were involved.

It could be likened to gambling, not too much of a stretch. Someone once said that business people like to bet on what they can control. Racing another person’s shares against your own through some competition is quite common, and car racing is quite popular. What we can control is the car, the driver. Of course, there are rules; cheating is strictly forbidden.

“The son from that company, we’ll race on their track. Try out the track first.”    “Uh-huh, sure.” I agreed. Direk is quite fond of these things, but he usually doesn’t let me race because he worries, but if he’s buying a new car for me and letting me race, it means this race isn’t ordinary. Just the car alone is an investment of over a hundred million, indicating that if we win, the amount of money must be staggering.

Back in the day, Jo was in the same boat, racing to let his dad bet, but lately, with his studies and work piling up, he hasn’t had time to race, so he lets others race in his place. Once he got married, he disappeared from the tracks, only showing up to watch occasionally. Did Jo and I ever talk about this? Probably not, because it wasn’t that important, and for the last year or so, there haven’t been any big bets between Jo’s dad and Direk. This is the first time in over a year for Direk.

If it’s not a big betting match, it’s just small bets among the spectators, which means if many people come to watch, the track earns a lot. It all depends on who’s racing; the rating needs to be good. Of course, if I race, the place is packed every time, so Direk is torn between worry and the promise of good money.

“Can you handle it? I’m starting to get nervous.”

“It’s just a car race. It’s not like I’m going to die, Direk.” I said the same line I always do. It’s just a car race, not a matter of life or death; at worst, we lose.    “The car’s been thoroughly checked by the manufacturer, and I’ll have people check it in stages until the race day. In the meantime, you should practice.”

“I’m not sure if I’ll have time to practice.”

“Why not? After the evening ward rounds, you’re free, right?”

“You’re not even letting me study.”

    “Quit, I’m tired of this.”

“Oh, didn’t you say to stick that degree on the wall so you can stare at it?” I said, laughing at the memory of Direk’s words when I complained about wanting to quit. Stick your degree on my wall, so when I wake up, I’ll have the motivation to work, to know that my son isn’t a fool.

“I just said that, I’m frustrated. Seeing you stressed, but you chose this path, your mom would be proud.”

“So proud, Dylan got another F, did he, son?” I teased with words I thought my mother might say, making Direk laugh.

“Dylan. It’s been a long time since I called you that.”

“Don’t call me that here.” I said, “Oh, and about my surprise. I think it’s more surprising than what Direk has.”

“Did you get a woman pregnant?”

    “That would be bad. No.”

“What is it then?” Direk rubbed his chin, pondering, “Are you surprising me by going out and killing or raping someone?”

“Why does that sound so vulgar? No!” Why does Direk always think of such vulgar things when it comes to me? “It’s something softer.”

“You must have had sex with a dog.”

“Wow, that’s even more vulgar, why would you  think I’d do sex with a dog?” I started to pinch the bridge of my nose, sitting down next to Direk.

“What is it then, or just some petty crime, like stealing? Why steal when you have everything, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t steal, man, we’re talking about something big.”

“Not stealing either, softer than that, huh?” Direk still had his brows furrowed,

“Snatch and run. That’s no good, that’s still stealing.”

    “Think, think, tick-tock.”

“Alright, Arthit, what illegal thing have you done, tell me.”

    “Will you help?”

“I’ll kick your ass until you’re dead, you devil with a hairy head. What did I teach you? I taught you not to cause trouble for others, didn’t I?”

“Why do you sound so proud when you say you’ve taught me nothing?” I said, laughing out loud, “Okay, I’ll reveal it, don’t die of shock, especially now that you’re old.”

“Old and ready for anything.” Direk placed his hands on his knees, leaning back, his face serious as he waited to listen.

“I have someone I like, and I’m currently flirting with them.”

    “…”

    “…”

Direk was silent. I stayed quiet too, waiting for him to say something first, but the look of absolute shock on his face was hilariously funny, just as I had anticipated it would be.

“You killing someone would’ve shocked me less than this.”

“Cheeky.” I said out loud with a loud kick, “It’s already bad.”

    “Are you serious?”

    “Serious.”

“You, Arthit-Dylan, damn, you. No, no.” Direk held his forehead, rubbing his face hard, “You are Arthit, my damn son.”

    “Oh, huh.”

“Damn, fuck…Emma! Come look at your son!! Damn it. Not true, damn, are you dating? Who is she, whose child is she, where is she from, is she studying or working, what’s her personality like, can she accept you, does she really like someone like you, can you live with her, won’t her parents be devastated if she sues us, and how did you court her, when and how did you start liking her, why am

    I just finding out now?!”

“Calm down first, Direk, don’t lose your cool.” I said, still unable to stop laughing, knowing Direk’s reaction would be hilarious like this.

“I can’t take it anymore, it’s too much for today, I can’t handle it. Let’s talk another day.”

“Come on, let’s talk today. He’s the one I brought home, the one who came to see Emma’s spirit.”

“Oh, oh, it’s a he…the one with blue hair.”

    “Yeah.”

“That person? Arthit, and he’ll take you?”

“What do you mean he will take me…Am I something bad?”

“What good do you have? Sigh, let’s say you fell for each other in San

    Francisco.”

“Yes, it was natural. Not fake.”

“Oh, huh.” Direk still had his hand on his forehead, his elbow on the table, looking like he was about to faint at any moment, “Just courting, right? What did he say?”

“He rejected me, but I don’t mind.”

    “I figured as much.”

“So I forced to stay with him.”

“Pity, damn, there are millions of good people in the world, why does that son have to meet you?”

“See, pitiful. I was thinking of taking him to do some merit.” my words made Direk turn to look at me sharply before letting out a sigh.

“That’s you, taking someone to do merit to cleanse yourself.”

“Merit can’t do anything to me.”

“Sigh, so, is this serious? I mean, are you serious about him?”

“Very serious, as serious as it gets. I’ve never been like this before, you know that, Direk.”

“Yeah, I understand…you’ve grown up, but this kind of growth is something a father like me worries about a lot. You won’t do anything to him that would make his parents come crying to me, right?”

“Right now, it would probably be Direk who’d have to go cry.”

    “Why?”

“To beg him to love me.”

“Arthit, I beg you. Think about my reputation in society, I’m the president of the biggest auto parts manufacturing company in the country with a great international reputation, many famous car brands come to me for partnerships, and you want me to go cry in front of his parents to make him love my son?”

    “Yes.”

“Arthit, you, damn it, I’m so fed up with you.”

“Direk you haven’t done enough good deeds either, huh?”

    “Why?”

“Because you got me as a son.”

    “True.”

“Damn.” I suddenly thought of something, “Did you just say parents?”

    “Yeah, why?”

“He also has a ‘daddy’ that doesn’t mean father, damn. I just remembered.” I widened my eyes unintentionally as I recalled the ‘daddy’ who wasn’t a father, that well-mannered man from England in the short guy’s room, oh crap.

“What the hell is a ‘daddy’ that doesn’t mean father, are you crazy? Daddy is father, how did you grow up in San Francisco?”

“No, it’s like a new slang, normally you’d call your dad ‘dad’, but ‘daddy’ has a more…like, a patron or sugar daddy feel.”

“A sugar daddy?” Direk asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

“I can’t explain it well, it’s like an older guy, call him ‘daddy’.” I tried to explain, but my vocabulary was limited, “Let’s say he might already have a husband. And he’s English, and as handsome as me.”

    “What’s that supposed to mean?”

    “Oh.”

“Even if he got another man, you’ve got to fight for it.”

“What kind of father teaches his son like this?” I said with disgust, “But I agree.

I’ll fight until I become the main husband, then I’ll send that gentleman back to

    England.”

“How sure are you that he’s really a husband?”

“I heard him call him ‘daddy’.”

“It might just mean ‘dad’ in English, you bastard.”

    “Really?”

“Yeah, why do I have only one child and he’s so stupid? I think he’s really his father. Is he half-English or something, but he doesn’t look like it at all.”

“He’s a pure Thai, according to what North told me.”

“Then he might be his mother’s new husband.”

“Oh…yeah, that’s right, that makes sense. Direk, why are you so smart?”

“Yeah, I was wondering why my son is so stupid.”

“What’s wrong with being stupid? Even if I’m stupid, I’m not bad, am I?”

“But you, you’re both bad and stupid, you fool.”

“How can I escape from your genes? Got it from my dad, this bad and stupid trait, cursing me is like cursing yourself.” I said jokingly.

“Ah, so you’re still courting him. Okay, I don’t know if I should support you, but I have to side with my own son. So, if you need anything, just tell me, like, if you need someone to help with a kidnapping.”

“Got it, I know exactly who I got my nature from.” I said, “And how did you court Emma? Any generational secrets to pass down?”

“I was normal, just kept at it, bought her things, paid for stuff.”

    “Do I have to pay?”

“Yeah, dude, how else would he know you can take care of him?”

“Oh. I’m out of money, can I have some?”

“Damn, you need money to pay for him and you’re asking me? I might as well make him my boyfriend.”

“Wow, Direk, are you going to be a sugar daddy to him?” I teased, “My savings are gone, these days I’m still letting Jo buy me meals.”

“Sell your snake or your car then.”

    “No way.”

“Sigh. Alright, alright, then if you win the race, I’ll give you ten percent.”

    “How much is that?”

    “Almost a hundred.”

“Damn, Direk, why are you betting so much? So if you lose, you lose a thousand then?”

“Yes, but if you win, you also get a thousand, but don’t feel too pressured because a thousand won’t make your leg hair fall out.”

    “But it’ll make tears fall.”

    “Yeah, whatever.”

“Don’t feel pressured, but if I lose the race, I lose a billion, that’s what you are saying, right?”

“Yes. Don’t feel pressured.” Direk reached out to pat my shoulder, “Losing money isn’t that big of a deal, but it’s about losing face. This opponent doesn’t like us much, so they’re coming at us full force, but they don’t know that this amount of money isn’t much compared to the profits from the new model we just released, we’re comfortable.”

“You like to show off how rich you are, it’s annoying.”

“You like to show off to me too.”

“Yeah, true.” While others might like to boast about their own wealth (like that bastard Jo) I like to boast about my dad because he’s rich. Even if people tease that I’m rich because of my parents’ money, I’d retort, so what? Your dad isn’t as rich as mine, bastard, something like that, “Just focus on your work, Direk. Once I graduate, I’ll be set.”

“You don’t plan to work at all, how will you support your future wife?”

    “With your money.”

“Spit…and what about your drum set?”

“Direk, can I still get that?”

“If you ask me, I’ll support you all the way, do whatever you want. If you want to do something, just do it.”

“Touching. I said let’s wait until I finish school first. Once I’m done taking care of my mom’s health, I’ll be free, then I can go back to playing drums.”

“I’m waiting to hear your new songs.”

    “Old ones.”

“I deleted all the files, got tired of them.”

    “Oh.”

“Kidding. It’s nice to listen to them; it makes me feel proud. Even if it was just a high school band not taking it seriously, back then, you were super famous in San

    Francisco.”

“Thinking about the past makes me nostalgic. I’ll go see those guys again next time I’m back.” I said, thinking of friends I still keep in touch with. It was a music club that formed a pretty amateur band, but our songs became quite popular in the city for a while. Playing music and drums has always been my dream, which I won’t go into detail about now; maybe when the mood strikes. Let’s just say what my true dream is.

“Yeah, yeah, good. Want to eat dinner together? The housekeeper has prepared it already.”

“You don’t even need to ask, but I have to go back to my future wife, she’s at my place.”

“She’s at your place? So she’s opened her heart to you now?”

    “Yeah, I think so.”

“Damn, there’s hope then. Are you preparing the engagement gifts or what? The dowry is ready, I’ll tell you that.” Direk’s words made me burst out laughing,

“Invite him to dinner with us.”

    “Can I?”

“Of course, damn it, come eat at home so he’ll know you’re serious, and he’ll be impressed that we’re a warm family.”

“Wow, Direk, you’re the best. I’ll bring him. Hey, can I take the new car out first?”

    “To pick him up?”

“That too, but I also want to pick up Cat from Fah’s place where he left his stuff.

    His motorcycle isn’t convenient.”

“Yeah, take it, drive safely.”    “You don’t need to tell me.”

I responded like that before taking the keys from Direk, opening the door of the new car, and looking around, checking everything until I was satisfied, then slowly drove out of the house. I wanted to say this car feels damn good in my hands.    I stopped by Fah’s room to get Mr. Jeon, planning to surprise that short guy, but then I saw a message from North saying he had walked to class and was now walking back. Seeing that message, I frowned and called him in irritation. Why the hell does he have to walk? It’s exhausting, I’ve already let him choose any car he wants, normal people would be thrilled to death with each of my cars, they’re not ordinary at all.

Sigh, I forgot. No matter what, it’s that low-battery robot.

WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 24: Highest or Million

I put Warali back into its original enclosure. After checking the time and realizing I had to leave for class, I allowed some time to grab a meal and walk to university. Even though he said I could use his car, I wouldn’t. I can’t drive a big bike, and I don’t want to drive his car either; the reason being I’m not fond of using other people’s vehicles.

I quickly took a shower and changed clothes. Even though I’ve resigned myself to being forced to stay in this room, I’m not used to using someone else’s bathroom; it’s just not familiar, so I’m not keen on using it.

I grabbed my backpack from beside the sofa, checked to make sure everything was there, then took the key card and left the room, locking the door behind me.

After almost all my professors uploaded the class sheets to the group on the university’s social media, it became much more convenient. All I needed was a tablet, so I had no issues with textbooks. Even for the subjects that used books or sheets, I never took them out of my bag, which was lucky because the neighbor only brought my backpack, ensuring I didn’t lack the materials for today’s classes.    I walked from my condo, passing by the medical faculty where I was dragged for a morning run. If I were forced to run every day, there would be two scenarios: one, I would start to enjoy running and my body would get used to it, or two, I would hate running, hate mornings, and hate the medical faculty because it would be the place that made me exhausted.

And I hope I’ll like it more. If I have to run every morning, because either way, running is inevitable. Liking it would be better for my mental health.

I stopped at a small roadside eatery before walking into the university towards my lecture building. Even without a motorcycle, it wasn’t much of a hassle since there were campus shuttle services available. I attended my classes as usual until it was time for the evening art club session.

I had to prepare myself a bit because I was sure to be bombarded with questions about my neighbor. Even though I was too lazy to explain, it was unavoidable.    I walked into the art club area and was slightly surprised to see that all three were already there, which was unusual since I was always the first to arrive.    “You’re late today.” Ter was the first to greet me cheerfully, while North was asleep on the table. Cat was drawing for fun but looked up at me as soon as Ter spoke.

    “Hmm, you guys are early.”

“It’s normal for us, Dao you  are the one who’s late.”

    “Oh.”

“Why were you late? Did the professor let you go late?”

“No. I didn’t bring my motorcycle.”

    “Oh, why?”

“So…” I fell silent, thinking about where to start the story. I wasn’t sure what

North had already told Ter and Cat. So, I reached out to shake North awake,

    “North, wake up.”

“What the hell.” North swore in annoyance, brushing my hand away without even opening his eyes, looking very groggy. That made me understand; North probably didn’t know who was shaking him. Of course, except for his partner, who would be a special case.

“He just keeps sleeping, even when we were coming here, he made me carry him to the club. I don’t know what’s making him so sleepy.” Ter said. I nodded in understanding, guessing it was from when they went running. I was still sleepy too.

“North, wake up!” Ter stood up from the table and shook him vigorously.

“Ow, damn it, let people sleep.”

    “Yeah, wake up!”

“I won’t!” He retorted without opening his eyes. “If I’m sleepy, I’m sleepy, you bastard.”

“I’m going to call Phii Jo and tell him you were sleeping during class.”

“Go ahead, Phii Jo was sleeping too.”

“Sigh, what’s this about, wake up first.” Ter started to frown in annoyance before poking North’s ribs until the drowsy one jumped up.

“Damn, Ter, you asshole, what are you doing, I almost fell off the chair.”

    “See, you’re awake now.”

“Yeah, yeah, why wake me up, the teacher isn’t here yet, is he?”

    “Dao called for you.”

“Just because he called means you had to poke me, my butt burst, damn it.” North grumbled, looking irritated.

“Ew.” Cat, who had been silent for a while, made a disgusted face at North, which earned him a flick on the forehead from North. Cat frowned, clutching his forehead, which was starting to turn red.

“What’s with that ew? Never seen a butt burst before?”

“Never, you liar, always using force, I don’t want to play with you anymore.”

“You liar. We all did it when we were kids.”

“Never. When I was a kid, I wasn’t even in diapers, I crawled out of the womb and went straight to the toilet.”

    “Cat’s bragging.”

“Not Cat. Not bragging.” Cat stuck his tongue out at North again.

“Please, your tongue. Anyone got scissors, damn it?”

“Enough.” Ter tried to put an end to the nonsense that showed no signs of stopping easily. Whenever we were together, this was almost always the case. Someone would always lead us into silly topics, and someone else would have to steer the conversation back, otherwise, we could go on all day, “Now, what’s going on? I forgot.”

“Oh, I was going to read your fortune, waiting for you, you referee ghost.”

“Dao is here, and you just brush him off, you scoundrel.”

“Oh. Next time, use a stick if you don’t want to hurt your hand.” North said,

“Come on. Let’s read the fortunes, it’s been a while since we’ve updated.”    “Hmm.” I said before turning to North.

    “Where are the cards?”

“No cards, today we’re doing it by birth date.”

“Oh, cool.” Then North told me his birth date. I wrote it down on paper and started reading his fortune by comparing it with the notes I had.

“These days, your studies or work might not go smoothly, but your love life is fine, North, you’re doing really well in love, have you done any good deeds? But wait, doesn’t North’s boyfriend not practice Buddhism, I seem to remember you mentioning that.”

“Yes. He doesn’t practice Buddhism, but when I chant or pray, I wish for good things for him, for our relationship to be smooth.”

“Phii Jo doesn’t practice Buddhism?” Ter asked, North nodded in response,

    “Then what does he practice?”

“Not just Phii Jo, Phii Arthit too doesn’t practice Buddhism. Guess what they practice.”

“Definitely Christian.” Said Ter, but North shook his head.

    “Islam, maybe not?” Cat asked.

    “No.”

“The Cult of Bacon?” Cat asked again.

    “Yeah, that’s possible, but no.”

    “Then what?”

    “They practice themselves.”

“Excuse me, but what kind of crazy person worships themselves?” Ter said, raising a hand to his forehead. I wasn’t too surprised since my neighbor had already said he didn’t practice Buddhism. He might be Christian, but for someone like him, it was unlikely he’d respect anyone other than himself, being so selfabsorbed.

“Hmm, but not surprising, right, Dao?” Cat said. I nodded in agreement, “And what about Phii Hill?” I turned to ask Ter.

“He’s just a regular Buddhist, Phii Fah.”

“Buddhist, but he studies other religions too. He once took me to a church, saying he wanted to study something like that.”

“That’s very much like Phii Fah. He’s like a cup that’s never full, ready to absorb all the knowledge in the world.” North said, “So, what about my luck?”

“Your luck is usually bad anyway. Didn’t you wear the bracelet I gave you?”    “Bracelet? Haha, I lost it. Can I have another one, please?” North beamed a wry smile. I shook my head in response.

“No, there’s only one. Your luck might get even worse this month, be careful with people close to you; they might bring bad things.”

    “Oh, you guys!”

“Not anyone here or your lover.” I clarified, North usually has bad luck but compensates by being a good person, “Just be careful, don’t pick up anything strange.”

“Can’t I even pick up money if I find it?”    “Return it to the owner.” I said.

“Oh, yeah, right, return it to the owner!” North nodded, “Anything else?”

“That’s all. Ter, want to check your fortune?”

“Uh, sure.” and then Ter gave his birth date for me to read his fortune again.    “Ter you will have the chance to meet new people who will bring good things, but as friends. Your love life is still great, even better because there won’t be any arguments during this period. As for studying or work, it’ll go smoothly; teachers might be lenient and not criticize much.”

“Exactly, I submitted my work the other day, and the teacher barely criticized it even though he’s known for being strict. My friends were nearly crying from the criticism, but I passed through fine. Dao, your fortune reading is really accurate.

    Cat, you should try it.”

    “No thanks.”

“Here we go again.” North said, Cat doesn’t really like reading fortunes because he once said he prefers not knowing, “But why does Ter have such good luck? My work isn’t going smoothly, and I have a presentation tomorrow, it’s definitely going to be a mess.”

“It might not be related, so don’t lose heart. Go back and prepare well; there’s no reason for the teacher to criticize if you do that. It all depends on us, don’t believe in fortune too much.”

“Why does someone like you who reads fortunes say something like that? It’s so weird.” North said, “I’ve never seen you read your own fortune, does your love graph shoot up?”

“I don’t read fortunes for myself.” I said, “I don’t want to know what will happen to me. It’s more exciting to wait and see.”

“Yeah, that’s interesting. So, what about the professor, isn’t he coming?”    “He’s coming, but he’s always late.” I replied.

“What were we talking about before this fortune reading? Oh, oh, this is it, the matter of Phii Arthit and Dao, isn’t this the main topic for us today?” Cat said, appearing to be the first one to bring everyone back to the main subject. I found myself unintentionally sighing.

“Oh, right, North just mentioned that Phii Arthit likes Dao, then he fell asleep. What’s the deal?” Ter asked, showing great interest, “Let me say upfront that I can hardly believe it. Like, Hia, damn. When I first heard it, I thought I heard wrong, I was shocked for like ten seconds.”

“True, I can confirm that. When North told, Ter was completely speechless.”    “And what about Cat?” I asked.

“How could I not be shocked? That’s Phii Arthit, and this is Dao, they both might be up in the sky, but they’re like day and night.”

“You compare well.” North said, stroking his chin, “But Dao in daylight is like Meen. Just not visible because the sun is too bright, and hot too, damn it, with that shameless face, it’s winter now, man.”

“Yeah, their names clash perfectly, dear lord.” I said.

“It might be fitting though, Phii Arthit is hot, and you’re cool, a perfect contrast.” “Really? I don’t think it’s that perfect, someone with no limits and a life worth millions.” Ter said with a look of sympathy, “First of all, how could he even like you? Phii Hill once said that Phii Arthit is very far from the concept of love.”    “Yeah, I’ll sue, he even went for a massage with you.” North squinted as he spoke.

“He went with Phii Jo.” Ter said.

“With me too.” North added, “Three hundred, it was so relaxing, Thai massage.”

    “Really? Thai massage?”

“Yeah, but there are some downsides too, you know, right?” North turned to ask.

    “Hmm.”

“Can you handle it, or is this why you don’t like him?”

    “No, this isn’t related.”

“Then what is it related to?”

“It’s about the fact that I don’t like him.”

“And why would you go out of your way to make Dao say you don’t like your brother?” Ter snapped back at me.

“But he went out of his way.”

    “Huh?”

“The day he confessed his love to me, he held my hand and wouldn’t let go. He asked if I didn’t like him holding my hand. I told him I didn’t like him.”    “Why would he go out of his way for that?” North furrowed his brows and scratched his head, “What the hell, going out of his way to make someone say they don’t like him, you’re crazy.”

“So, you’ve already rejected him?” Cat asked. I nodded, “He didn’t seem upset?”

“There was no sign or face that looked like someone who was upset.”

“Oh, come on, a rejection won’t do anything to that bastard.” North said, “If you want to do something to him, you’d have to burn him with rubber or cement his feet and drop him in water.”

“Do you really have to go that far?” I asked.

“Ha, you hitting him won’t hurt him with your size, cursing won’t hurt him either, getting people to beat him up isn’t guaranteed because Phii Arthit is known for fighting, he often gets into fights because he’s hot-blooded, I heard when they draw his blood, the needle burns, he’s that hot-blooded.”

“Damn, is he some kind of modified human?” Ter burst out laughing, “So what happened after that? What did you do after rejecting him? Come on, I want to hear from the moment he confessed, how he did it.”

When Ter said that, I had to recount all the details from the day before when he threatened to break down the door, hugged me, held my hand without letting go, and confessed. I rejected him, but he didn’t care about my rejection; he harassed me by kissing my forehead and then forced me to stay in his room.

       “…”

Everyone was silent, no one said anything, as if they were stunned into stillness. North was the first to laugh heartily, while Cat and Ter furrowed their brows, looking both confused and tense.

“Damn, damn, he’s really the worst in our class, what kind of person likes someone and then forces them to stay with him, not even a little lie, oh, I took your key card, there’s no spare because the concierge is closed for three days, everything is prepared, damn.”

“Yeah. I don’t want to scold, but seriously.” Ter said before letting out another laugh. Meanwhile, Cat just let out a big sigh, “But this is good. No, it’s fitting for

Dao, adept at ignoring, great at ignoring.”

“It’s true, just think about how ordinary people would flirt, like sending messages, chatting, or setting up a date. All my friends are like that.” North said.    “So, should I accept the way Phii Arthit flirts with my friend?” Ter raised an eyebrow to ask.

    “Yes.”

“You’re fully on board with this.” Cat teased.

“Correct, I have a reputation for boarding any ship where the captain dies.”

North said proudly. I made a puzzled face at that statement, wondering if by ‘captain’ he meant me.

“Then go ahead and jump on.” Ter said, sounding unamused.

“And who would be left? You? You’d be good, Ter, the one known for reaching the shore with any ship he boards.” the person said, sounding excited.

    “Me?”

“Yeah, and will you cheer for him, Ter?” Cat turned to ask. The person being asked still looked confused before turning to look at me.

“Well, if my friend is okay with it, I’ll support him fully, but look at our friend’s face.” and then all three turned to look at me, “I don’t even know if he’s at peace with the world yet.”

“…Uh, this is my normal face.” I said. I didn’t think my expression had changed much from usual, but North burst out laughing again.

“See this. It’s normal, man. Come on, let’s all cheer for my senior. We, the sea people, will row the boat together.”    “I like that saying.” Cat said.

“You too, Cat?” Ter asked, “If you ask if I’ll cheer, honestly…I don’t know. It’s because Dao is someone you can’t easily sway, you know what I mean?”    “Why are you talking like he’s not sitting right here?” North said, “Or are you implying he’s here but might as well not be?”

“No, no.” Ter quickly denied, “I’m just saying it all depends on Phii Arthit. Ask if all the buildup you’ve done has any effect, North.”

    “None at all.”

“See, I think it’s more like a raft than a ship, where one person is paddling their heart out, and the other just lies there, doing whatever they want, maybe even dipping their feet in the water.”

“Am I the one dipping my feet in the water?”    “Exactly, dude.” North said.

    “Oh.”

    “You’re so slow, man.”

    “Uh.”

“Sigh, but Ter, are you saying what I did is worthless?” North started to dramatize by making a pouty face and hugging his legs like a child with problems, “What I did is worthless, right, Daotok? Boo-hoo, I’ve been thinking about what to do all this time.”

“Use my name.” Cat teased, “Don’t act pitiful. It doesn’t suit you.”

“Shh.” North clicked his tongue in annoyance before putting his legs down from the chair, “I didn’t get anything anyway, honestly, that ghost’s face when teased is funny.”

“Is it funny when I make a disgusted face?”

“Yeah, I bet Phii Arthit likes your disgusted face too. Otherwise, he wouldn’t act like that, even calling you cute.”

“He called you cute too, huh? Wow, that’s nice, like he’s complimenting my kid.” Ter said with a proud look that I didn’t understand, “So, you’ve scanned and it’s okay, right?” He turned to ask North, who nodded firmly to confirm.

“Then that’s fine. Let’s change the question to what Dao will do next.”

    “Me?”

    “Yeah.”

“And what can I do?” I said, and everyone laughed together.

“Poor you.” Cat said, still laughing, “If he promised not to do anything Dao doesn’t like, then it should be fine. If he does, call me, I’ll tell the other seniors.”    “I can feel a certain husband bragging in there, I don’t know why.” North teased, slightly sticking out his tongue, and Cat immediately flicked North’s lips, “Ow, that hurt! You guys see I won’t do anything, and you hurt me big time. Swap me for Thaw, and I’d rub my foot on his face.”

And then we just kept chatting casually, talking about me and other things until the club advisor came in, and we started our club activities together. The club ended around five, and everyone went their separate ways, each on their own motorcycle except for me. I, who had to walk back to my room, was offered a ride by everyone.

       “It’s okay. I can walk.”

“Really?” Ter asked, with a slight look of concern.

“Really. I want to take a walk.”

    “Okay, be careful.”

“Yeah, everyone drive safely, North, drive well, okay?”

“Why are you singling me out?”

“North rides his motorcycle pretty badly, he likes to go fast.”

“Whatever.” North said, twisting the handlebars, but one hand was on the brake, so the bike didn’t move. I couldn’t help but smile at his funny pose before everyone really started to disperse, leaving me standing alone.

I wasn’t lying when I said I wanted to take a walk; today, I felt like spending my evening free time just wandering around the university after not doing so for a while. Another reason was that I wasn’t too keen on going back to the condo because it wasn’t my room. I didn’t mind it, I just felt somewhat out of place.

I put in my earphones, played my usual playlist, and started walking until I reached the university’s reservoir. If I thought about a place to rest or take a walk in the university, this was the only place that came to mind.

There were many people running for exercise, some playing guitar, and others taking photos. I quite like this place, even though it’s crowded, it has a really nice atmosphere, especially in this winter season when the evening air feels refreshing on the skin, and when the sky darkens with the sunset, it becomes especially beautiful.

Cat once told me that his boyfriend had asked him out at that bridge, and I couldn’t help but smile listening to that story. Even though it wasn’t the most luxurious spot, it was the most romantic place in the university, and this university would become the most memorable place for both of them.

I walked slowly along the curved path designed not to obstruct those running, taking breaks when my legs got tired, looking up at the clear sky and the water in front of me, taking deep breaths to savor the atmosphere.

Sitting here watching people run or walk by isn’t bad at all. It’s a chance to relax and let my mind wander after a tiring day of work. Even if I don’t have any new ideas at this moment, returning to work will definitely be easier.

I got up from the bench and continued my walk, not far from the bridge where the lights were on. I sat down by the path, placing my feet on the grass that bordered the water. This section of the walkway is where most people sit, so I sat here too, but the spot I chose was somewhat secluded and darker, seeking some peace.

Not long after sitting down comfortably, listening to music, I received an incoming call. I immediately pressed the answer button on my earphones without checking who it was.

(Where the hell are you?) The deep voice from the other end of the line mixed with irritation made it clear to me who it was, and I was sure he wasn’t in a good mood right now.

    “I’m at the university.”

(North said you walked back, why didn’t you take your bike?)

       “Out of courtesy.”

(Damn, and you walked to class?)

       “I took the university shuttle.”

(Well, that’s good then. Where in the university are you?)

“By the pond, the water reservoir.”

    (There are two of those.)

“The one that was built first.”

(And why are you there?) his voice had cooled down a bit but still carried some displeasure, (Don’t be stubborn, I’ll come to pick you up.)

       “It’s fine, I’ll stay a bit longer.”

    (Then I’ll stay with you.)

“It’s fine, I want to be alone.”

(Oh, I’ll be alone too then) he said that before hanging up. I couldn’t help but let out a sigh while thinking he was on his way, and I tried to soak in as much peace as possible before it would vanish.

Not long after, a person quite distinctive due to his height and appearance appeared. I saw him from a distance, and almost all eyes were directed towards him. He walked along the path, increasing his pace when he saw me sitting here.    “Don’t the mosquitoes bite you?” That was his first greeting before he sat down beside me.

    “They don’t bite.”

“What time did you come here?”

    “Around five or so.”

“You could have been comfortable with a bike.”

    “I don’t want to.”

    “Sigh, you’re stubborn.”

    “…”

“What are you doing, enjoying the atmosphere?”

    “Yeah.”

“And the snake…Warali, it didn’t bite you, right?”

    “No.”

“Good, so how long do you plan on staying?”

    “A little while longer.”

    “Move over a bit.”

    “Why?”

“I want to lie on your lap.” He said before brushing his hand slightly to signal me to move over, then he lay down with his head on my lap without asking for permission, as if asking my permission was no longer necessary.

“Your shirt will get dirty.” I said because, as I mentioned, this wasn’t a bench but the edge of a walkway.

    “Will be washed.”

“…” I didn’t respond when he said that. I’d never had anyone rest their head on my lap before, which made me unaccustomed to the heavy feeling on my legs. I looked down slightly at the person lying there, and he was looking back at me even though it was quite dark around.

“Nice angle.” He said, “What song are you listening to?”

    “Same playlist.”

“Let me listen too.” He requested, and of course, even if I said no, it wouldn’t matter, so I took out one earphone and handed it to him to wear.

“Why do you have to lie down, it’s dirty here.”

“I want to rest on your lap.” the person lying down said, “Hey.”

    “Hmm?”

“I like it, you smell good.”

    “Oh.”

    “How was class today?”

    “Just normal.”

“Really? I had a presentation this morning, it was a mess, ward rounds were exhausting as hell, and you didn’t reply to my messages, why?”

    “Too lazy to reply.”

“Reply once in a while, I’m waiting, man.”

    “…”

“Winter here, otherwise, you’d be swarmed by mosquitoes. Do you know why there aren’t many mosquitoes in winter?”

“Don’t know.” I replied softly, “Here.”

    “What?”

    “Why do you like me?”

“It’s a question I can’t answer either. I’ve told you, it has to be you.”

“If it were someone else, you’d have won them over by now.”

    “Yeah, probably.”

    “It’s all pointless effort.”

“How many times have you said that now? I’m not tired, understand?”

    “I don’t understand.”

    “It’s your issue.”

“It’ll be even more tiring than this.”

“Oh really? How tiring? Like climbing Everest or swimming across the ocean?”

    “It might be that tiring.”

“Great, conquering Everest or swimming the Atlantic is one of my life goals too.

Don’t say it’s pointless effort because it’s definitely not.”

    “…”

“Sigh, give me your phone.” He said before extending his hand. I had no choice but to hand over my phone. He took it, typed something, and then the song changed.

And when the music of the song started playing, I felt that it was a song I had never heard before.

If I got down on my knees, And I pledged it with you. If I cross a million oceans just to be with you. Would you ever let me down?

If I climb the highest mountain just hold you tight. If I said that I would love you every single night. Would you ever let me down?

Well, I’m sorry. If it’s some kind to bear Because I love you…

“This is the first time I’ve ever given a love song to someone.”

The person lying on my lap reached out and took my hand, gently kissing it by the edge of my lips, and both the song and his actions made my heart start to beat stronger.

I don’t know how long it’s been since my heart hasn’t beat this strongly…

“And I really mean what the song says.”

“Hmm, it’s a nice love song.”

       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 23: Light Yellow

       Arthit

I set the bottle down, my gaze still fixed on the same spot. Even though his face looked tired and sleepy, he was forcing himself not to doze off, and his expression was somewhat grumpy, which I found quite cute.

    Cute?

I’ve never thought anything was cute in my whole life; it’s another unexpected thing that has happened again. With this short guy, no matter what feelings arise, I’m no longer surprised. It’s becoming the first time for many things, really.    “Hmmph.” He made a sound in his throat like he was slightly displeased when I ruffled his hair again, his face looking drowsy, which made me want to pinch his cheeks right then and there. Every little action of his made me smile uncontrollably.

    “You’re so damn cute.”

    “…”

The person I complimented was slightly taken aback, but the one more shocked was North sitting beside us. His eyes were now wide open to the point of almost popping out. Even Jo, who was standing there, froze.

“What’s with you guys, why are you so shocked?”

“No, no, Phii, I just need some time, just a bit of time to adjust to the fact that you’re not the same person anymore.” Said North while gently touching his own face. “The ones who react to your words are me and Phii Jo, but look at my friend

    first.”

“But just now he was stunned, even if just a little, right?” I said to North before turning back to look at him, “Right, are you stunned? Are you embarrassed?”    “Uh…”

    “Uh means what?”

    “Stunned.”

    “Embarrassed?”

“Uh…” He furrowed his brows in thought.

“Do you have to think about whether you’re embarrassed or not?” North asked.

“I don’t really remember what being embarrassed feels like.”

“Sigh.” I inadvertently let out a sigh. It’s good that he said he doesn’t remember because that could mean he might be embarrassed but doesn’t know it. Flirting with a robot like this, in a while, I’ll get used to it more, “Teach your friend how to feel embarrassed, okay? Jo, let’s continue, I need to score five points before we leave.”

“Five points? One is enough to reach.”

“Don’t underestimate me. Even if basketball isn’t my main sport.”

“Then let’s play football in the evening if you’re going to claim it’s your forte.”

“Okay. If you lose in basketball, Jo, you’re a dog.”

“Sure, if you lose in football tonight, you’re a dog too.”

    “Okay.”

And so our silly banter ended. Not for any reason other than Jo’s main sport being basketball. Seriously, without boasting, we can play almost anything, but since Jo is in the basketball club, he gets a lot of practice. As for me, I play football and am the team captain. If we compete one-on-one and lose, we might as well howl in defeat.

Speaking of football, I’m still annoyed, even though it’s been a year. No matter how good I am, it’s a team game, and my teammates are just average, while the other team had two, three, four, five million people marking me alone, following me relentlessly like they’ve admired me for over ten years. Even if I managed to shake them off, there was more waiting. That day was exhausting as hell, and we lost; not only was I tired all day, but then I had to drown my sorrows with alcohol, feeling totally frustrated.

Do we have to talk about Hill and Fah’s sports? Well, I’ll say a bit since you guys won’t read this part again after this, haha. Hill has been playing basketball since high school, and he played football too. He’s into typical boyish sports, and here he became the basketball team captain, and because of Hill, Jo followed suit, like in that movie, “Ghost Rider” or something.

Hill is very disciplined, an exemplary student and active in extracurriculars. I don’t know where he gets his energy from, he’s good at everything he does. He practices basketball intensely before competitions; besides his natural talent, he works hard on himself.

The same goes for Fah. Initially, Fah joined tennis because they were short on players, and he was kind enough to help. Eventually, the girls fought over him, causing too much trouble, so Fah switched from the tennis club to the football club with me. Fah, who had played football before, didn’t have any issues; he got good with just a little practice, but it was unfortunate he changed clubs late because after that, there were no more matches, just studying.

Because these three have to carry a lot on their shoulders, business, hospital, hopes, dreams, all sorts of shit, but I carry stuff too, you know, like eggs, big eggs.

Why does everything I say end up sounding so crass?

While I was thinking aimlessly, Jo scored, and we kept trading points back and forth, until we lost count of how many.

“North.” Jo shouted a bit loudly because of the distance, and the person called turned around immediately, “Did you count the score?”

    “Oh, three each.”

“Really? I have three, Jo has two, or what? Are you siding with your husband?”

“Damn, you won’t admit it, will you?”

“It’s true, ask the ghost of the referee. Why would I count the score wrongly?”

North said before turning to ask the person sitting next to him, “Right?”

    “We didn’t watch.”

I didn’t hear what the short guy said, but I could read his lips.

“Whatever, three-three then, let’s make it to five.”

“Come on, we have to present the case soon.”

“I have to present too, I was up all night preparing, my eyes are all bloodshot.” I grumbled with annoyance. Presenting a case in the morning is extremely frightening. Especially if it’s your own turn, damn, just thinking about it gives me chills.

    “Ready yet?”

“As ready as I can be, any better than this and your dad should do it.”    “You won’t let Uncle Direk do it, huh?” Jo furrowed his brows while we were struggling over the ball.

“Direk would probably curse at me, ‘You little shit, I work my ass off and still have to work for you, go resign and sell your face like you do, your grades are shit, you bastard.’“

My words made Jo burst out laughing.

“Your dad, man, I really like him.”

    “Want to trade dads?”

“Sure, I’m so sick of my dad these days.” Jo grumbled with a sigh. I don’t really get it, but it seems like this father and son duo have quite the bite. Given Jo’s personality and his sharp tongue, it makes sense.

“I’d rather trade moms. Your mom is beautiful, I want her as my new mom.”    “Sure, take her. I’m tired of helping her choose lipstick, man, one mouth but three or four hundred lipsticks, I’m serious, how can red be different, red is just red.” I laughed out loud. Jo can be quite a complainer if you notice, and this lipstick color thing, let’s just pass on that because there have been many times when Jo called us to help carry and choose stuff for his mom. Once she starts asking about makeup colors, imagine four guys, hands full of stuff, looking clueless.

“It’s like you have many pairs of shoes.” I said.

“I don’t have three hundred pairs of shoes, you bastard, and I don’t buy the same model in the same color.”

“Your mom says they’re different colors.”

“Different shit, they’re the same color, she put them on my arm in stripes, asked which one is prettier, they’re all the same damn color.”

I burst out laughing, Jo can really rant with feeling, especially since his dad is rarely free, he ends up being his mom’s date every time. Though lately, North has been tagging along too.

We chatted aimlessly, and in no time, the score was 4-4, with the next point deciding who wins this playful competition, but we were taking it quite seriously.    “I win, dude.” Jo said with a mocking smile. I sighed in frustration, wiping the sweat from my face with my shirt. Jo went to put the basketball away while I walked back to our seats to find the two who were waiting had already fallen asleep, leaning on each other.

I sat down on my knees to look up at the one who had drifted off, probably too sleepy to stay awake any longer.

    “Asleep again.”

“Does he always fall asleep when you take him for a run?”

“Often, it’s too early for him.”

“Oh, he’s not used to staying up late like us.” I said. Even though this short guy often overworks, going for a run in the early morning isn’t something he’s accustomed to, especially since he hasn’t exercised in a while. His body probably can’t take it.

It’s good that the one he’s leaning on is North. If it were anyone else, I’d be annoyed just thinking about it.

    “Jo.”

    “What?”

“Help me get him on my back.” I said before turning the other way. Jo helped him onto my back without waking him up. If he woke up, he wouldn’t have agreed to be carried by me. I slowly stood up, adjusting my arms to secure him better.    Jo nudged North awake, and North, half-asleep, climbed onto Jo’s back with practiced ease before falling asleep again.

    “It’s like work.” I said.

“You’ll be like this soon enough.”

    “You said that well.”

Me and Jo walked out of the gym with someone on each of our backs. People looked at me, probably surprised as hell, because I’ve never done anything like this before. On the other hand, everyone was getting used to Jo doing this.

Warm breath tickled the back of my neck, and I could feel the relaxed breathing rhythm, indicating he was sleeping soundly.

“Are you going to walk back, or do you want to hitch a ride with me?”

“That sounds good, feel sorry for him, want him to get to bed quickly.”

“Wow.” Jo made a disgusted face at me, “Seriously, I’ve got goosebumps.”

    “Damn.”

“You’ve never done anything like this before, man. It’s too much, give me some time to adjust. No, give me a lot of time, damn it. That bastard is changing. Even if it’s just for one person, it’s still good.”

“Well said, here’s ten baht for you.”

    “Keep it to suck on.”

    “Damn.”

We walked to Jo’s parking spot. I opened the back door and gently laid down the person I was carrying onto the seat. Turning around, I saw that Jo had already placed North on the front passenger seat. I went to sit on the other side of the back seat but found there wasn’t enough space, so I had to let him rest with his head on my lap.

“Looks like you’ve got yourself a big job.” Jo teased.

“Damn it, is this all the space this car has? Why didn’t you buy a bigger one?”

“That’s funny, bastard, the seating space is just like this, isn’t it good?”

“How could it not be good?” I said before looking down at the face of the person who was asleep and unaware, gently stroking his head, and inadvertently smiling.

“You seem quite fond of him.”

“Stop staring at me, you creep.”

“Look in the mirror, you can see your own face.”

“And what do you mean by ‘fond of’?”

“Fond of, like what you’re doing. When you pet his head, it’s like you love him, want to protect him, I can’t quite explain it.”

“Oh, I see, I get it now, this is fondness, right?”

“Yes.” the driver replied before the car started moving out of the parking lot.

“You’ve gotten much smoother at driving. Not so rough anymore.”

“What’s that supposed to mean? My wife would wake up and nag me if I drove like before.”

“So you said, how did you go from driving like crap to driving this well?”

“Try having a wife, you’ll understand.”

“But this little guy isn’t scared even when I drive.”

“Oh really? Well, that’s good then, you guys get along in a strange way, that’s nice.”

“Yeah, that’s true.” I agreed while still gently running my hand through his soft blue hair. He shifted slightly, turning to face me.

    Cheeky…

Why are you trying to burrow into me!

I grumbled to myself as he nestled his face near my stomach. Seriously, burrowing in won’t help because my stomach isn’t soft like a pillow; it’s just hard abs.

I tried to nudge his head away a bit, but he just burrowed back in.

Damn it! I can’t breathe properly here, can I just pinch him right now?    Calm down, self, he’s asleep, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s asleep, he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s asleep, he doesn’t know what he’s doing!!!    While I was chanting to calm myself down, the car arrived at the condo. I gently moved his head to the seat and quickly got out, walked around to the other side, and lifted him up.    “See you.”

    “Yeah, see you.”

Then the black car drove off. I walked into the condo building, still carrying the small guy in my arms. He’s really small, light as if he’s been fasting since birth, and too skinny for my liking.

Into the elevator, I pressed for the seventh floor. While thinking about finding his key card, a very sneaky plan came to mind. I opened my own door and laid him on my bed, rummaged through his pants pocket for the key card, and took a look at it.

I’ll hold onto this for now 😉

I left my room, used the key card to open his door, and took the liberty of grabbing his student uniform, laptop, and the pen and mouse he uses for work, bringing them back to my room. I placed everything on my desk. Even though there were some of my things on the desk, it was spacious enough to fit his stuff too.

I hung the student uniform on a shelf beside the bed. That seemed to be all for now. I passed by the condo management earlier and saw a notice saying they’d be closed for about three days, so he wouldn’t have a spare key card either.

I took out his phone, unlocked it with his finger, wondering if adding my fingerprint would be noticed. No one would check whose fingerprints are on their phone, generally thinking only of those they’ve registered. But even if he found out, so what? I added my fingerprint to his phone.

I opened it up without any manners – yeah, manners are out the window right now. Normally, I have some manners with people who deserve them, but not with this short guy. If it were any wife, it wouldn’t matter if she had her favorite’s phone lying around; anyone would want to take a peek, humans can’t resist their inner curiosity. I looked through the photos, curious about what he had captured. There were no pictures of people at all, just photos of cats, landscapes, various drawings, cartoons, and portraits.

I checked his social media and chat apps; he didn’t talk to anyone except clients for work. It was probably true what North said, that he blocks everyone who tries to flirt with him. But he hasn’t blocked me, huh? Here’s a chance.

After roughly scanning through his phone, I checked his alarm. It was set for noon, meaning he might have afternoon classes and set an alarm to wake up for lunch.

I placed his phone on the shelf beside the bed, on top of his school uniform. Thankfully, the uniform was already folded in the wardrobe, otherwise, it would have been a mess when I grabbed it. I went to take a shower, changed my clothes, and prepared for school. Before leaving the room, I looked at the person sleeping peacefully on the bed, completely unaware.

I left my spare key card there in case he came back first before I got back from class.

I sat on the bed, leaned in, and gently kissed his forehead before slowly pulling away.

I smiled happily, feeling like just this act made today a good day for me.

I slowly opened my eyes, still half-asleep, and was met with an unfamiliar smell from the blanket and pillow. I found myself in an unfamiliar room. Startled, I sat up quickly, clutching the blanket without realizing it.

What…what is this, where am I, why am I here…

I quickly looked around, trying to understand the situation, spotting my phone and uniform nearby. I grabbed the phone first. I put my feet down from the bed and walked around cautiously.

I saw my computer and equipment on the desk, next to which were books and sheets of paper. After a moment, I began to understand that I was in the room next door, and it wasn’t surprising if the neighbor took me there. It’s not strange for someone like him, who does what he wants with people he likes, to do this.    I opened my phone and saw a message from the neighbor, so I opened it immediately:

☀︎: If you’re reading this, you must know you’re in my room.

☀︎: And I’ll be honest here, I’ve taken your key card.

☀︎: The concierge at the ground floor is off for three days. So no spares for you.

☀︎: You probably know the reason. Feel free to use the room.

☀︎: Your school uniform is on the shelf next to the bed, your laptop is on the desk.

☀︎: The car keys are hanging, take your pick, drive your 40.

☀︎: There’s food in the fridge, you can use the microwave.

☀︎: If you think the room is a mess, help tidy it up a bit.

☀︎: Yeah, there’s a snake in the clear container next to the wardrobe, be careful.

☀︎: My spare room key card is on the table, take it in case I’m late coming back.

I read the long message he left before inadvertently raising my hand to rub my cheek. If you ask whether I’m angry about this, how should I put it? I think I’ve started to come to terms with it because I consider myself quite adaptable. Arguing or resisting wouldn’t achieve anything; it would just be exhausting, and that feeling of being tired and wanting to do whatever comes back again.

He said he wouldn’t do anything I dislike. If he isn’t lying, I can probably forget about any serious concerns. If it’s not too bad being here, I’ll just bear with it.    Sigh. Even though I say that, it doesn’t mean I’m not mentally exhausted. Why does it have to be me, for heaven’s sake? Sigh, well…sigh.

I tripped over the words “be careful with the snake.” I immediately walked over to the side of the closet and saw a snake in a clear glass enclosure, a beautiful light yellow ball python, very beautiful.

I knelt down, getting close to look at its pattern, it was incredibly beautiful. No need to ask how expensive it might be.

“So beautiful, why is it so beautiful?” I spoke to the snake lying still in its enclosure. It was clear how well the owner took care of it. I immediately took out my phone to take a photo and then opened the chat with my neighbor.

SS: This snake is so beautiful, can I handle it?

☀︎: Sure, but be careful, it might not be used to your scent.

       ☀︎: But it’s not aggressive.

       SS: What’s its name?

       ☀︎: Doesn’t have one.

    ☀︎: You name it.

SS: Is it male or female?

       ☀︎: Female.

       SS: Warali.

SS: It means bright like the moon.

       SS: The light yellow one.

       ☀︎: Okay, good.

☀︎: Be careful not to get bitten, I don’t want to kill it.

SS: It’s fine, this type of snake doesn’t hurt when it bites, right?

☀︎: You might not feel it, but I would.

SS: Can I ask how much it cost?

        ☀︎: A couple hundred thousand.

       SS: Oh

       ☀︎: What are you doing?

       SS: Just woke up.

☀︎: Not going to ask about me bringing you to my room?

SS: What are you going to do to me?

☀︎: Nothing. Just wanted to be with you.

       SS: Uh-huh.

       SS: So it’s fine then.

       SS: I’m tired of arguing.

       ☀︎: 5555555555555555, that’s so you.

☀︎: I went through your phone too.

SS: Are you going to steal my work?

☀︎: 555555, I just wanted to see who you were talking to.

    SS: Oh, uh-huh.

☀︎: What time do you have class?

       SS: In the afternoon.

       ☀︎: Grab something to eat.

       SS:

       ☀︎:

I set my phone down and opened the glass cabinet, gently taking out the beautiful boa constrictor and placing it in my hand. I’ve never kept snakes or handled them often, but I know one thing: you must never let it fall to the floor. This snake is worth a few hundred thousand, yet he lets me play with it. Even though I said getting bitten would be fine, he insisted it wasn’t okay for him and reminded me several times to be careful.

Does this mean he cares about me?

Hmm…it’s nice when someone cares like this.

       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 22: Around You

       Arthit

It was nearly 5 AM, before the sun had risen, the atmosphere outside was dim, and because it was nearing winter, it felt slightly chilly in the morning like this. I left my room dressed in my workout gear, a jacket, and sweatpants.

This morning, I was preparing to go for a run after not having exercised for quite a while due to lack of time, but whenever I had free time, I would exercise. I’ve had a habit of exercising since I was in San Francisco; this body doesn’t come from just lying around and eating snacks.

I stopped at the door next to mine, knocked a few times until the occupant opened it. He was also ready in workout clothes, which was because North had called last night. Initially, I thought he would ask about me and that short guy, but no, he invited me to exercise with Jo. Since I had already planned to go, I agreed, and he said he would invite the short guy too.

Who would have thought that after I confessed my feelings last night, the next day we’d have to wake up early to exercise together. I don’t know how that short guy was feeling after I left the room last night, but I guess he was probably fine, probably went back to work like usual.

To be honest, I like it this way. Of course, I like him. I mean it. Not letting go of his hand? Oh, whatever, I have work, I can use the other hand, if you want to hold it, hold it. This strange behavior that no one else in the world has, that’s what makes him so right.

Last night, I expressed all my feelings directly without bothering to arrange the words to make them sound good; one, because I’m not good with words, two, because I’m lazy and think it’s too complicated. If I think something or want something, I just say it straight, that’s the easiest.

I once thought about pulling him into a hug, and when I tried it yesterday, I found out that it was the ultimate feeling of comfort. That’s why I had to hug him tightly and for so long. And when I let go, I felt such regret that I didn’t want to release my grip, even to the point of sitting on the floor.

Because I’ve decided that no matter what, I’ll be with him. His rejection doesn’t mean anything to me. Even if he comes up with all the reasons in the world, it won’t affect me. If I want to be with him, then I will be. I’m that kind of stubborn, isn’t it true? Since he said he’ll be alone his whole life, it means I’m not bothering him. If he’s going to be alone, let me be the one person messing around nearby. And I’ve already said I would try not to do things he doesn’t like, I said I’d try, but in some cases, I might not be able to.

And that kiss on the forehead wasn’t planned; the situation just led to it. Consider it a small, little bonus for me. After getting back to my room, I prepared for my presentation until late at night until North called to invite me out.

I napped at three in the morning in the short guy’s room, so I woke up feeling great for exercise. North said that after coaxing, the short guy agreed to exercise and went to bed early, which is good because getting plenty of rest is something a doctor can recommend to others, but here I was, having slept only a few hours, so I might die before my patients do.

The person in front of me walked out of his room and locked it; he looked just like usual, just a bit sleepy.

“Ready?” I asked, he nodded in response, “Let’s run.”

    “…Huh?”

“Run from the condo to my faculty.”

    “…”

“…” He furrowed his brows, looking skeptical, which was understandable because I wasn’t lying. If you’re going to exercise by running, you’ve got to run there, not drive.

“It’s just a few minutes’ run.”

“Hmm.” He only answered that before following me downstairs. We started warming up.

    “Do you exercise often?”

    “I used to, a lot.”

    “Not anymore?”

    “Too much work.”

“North told me you work too hard, you know. You don’t have to rush it.”    “The faster the work is done, the more satisfied the client is, and they’ll hire me again next time.”

He answered with a lazy tone and an expressionless face while stretching.    Since I tend to wake up late, the condo I chose to live in isn’t far from my faculty; it takes only about ten minutes to run there.

I started running but slowed down from my usual speed to wait for the other person.

“Running at this speed, it should take about twenty minutes, I think.” I said when I saw the person next to me running too slowly.

    “Go ahead then.”

    “Leave you behind?”

    “Yeah.”

“No way, then why would I run with you?”

He didn’t reply, and since we were running, I didn’t say anything more until we reached my faculty.

In reality, when I come here to run, I often meet those guys. It started with them playing sports like normal guys do, but Jo is particularly obsessed with exercise. As for Hill and Fah, they exercise for the usual reasons: it’s good for health and the brain, because studying at this faculty requires a lot of mental energy. Either Hill or Fah once complained that if they don’t exercise, their brains feel dull, somehow.

For me, I feel like my brain is dead every time I go to class or take an exam.    “Did you bring your dog for a morning walk?” I greeted as I walked onto the track and saw that couple warming up.

“Do you want to be barked at by a dog?” North replied, looking annoyed, “Hey,

Phipungto. Didn’t expect you to come too.”

    “North; you insisted so much.”

“Come on, exercise a bit, you’re always sitting at your desk, not moving your body, you’ll get stiff.”

“Did you run here?” Jo turned to ask. I nodded in response, “You didn’t bring a change of clothes, huh? Shower at the faculty and wait for the presentation case then.”

“Yeah, damn, why didn’t I think of that? But I can’t, I need to give someone a ride.” I said, glancing at the person standing next to me for a moment.

“Have you asked him if he wants you to take him?”

“You bastard.” I cursed and couldn’t help but laugh, “Just got here?”

“Yeah, I felt like playing basketball.”

“Okay, let’s play. Do you guys want to play?” I turned to ask the two short guys who were talking.

    “Basketball? Hmm…” North looked thoughtful.

“North doesn’t play basketball, it’s just you and me.” Jo said.

“Really?” I asked, then turned to Dao, “What about you?”

“I don’t know how to play basketball.”

“Then, Phii, me and Phipungto will just run around here.”

“Okay.” I answered before walking over to Jo. Turning back, I saw North grinning mischievously, which was indeed not trustworthy.

    Daotok

I was jogging with North around 5:30 AM. At first, I asked North why he invited me and why so early in the morning. Can’t we run in the evening? The reason I got back was that North’s boyfriend has to be at the faculty by 7 AM, and running in the morning is more refreshing. Being persuaded by him, I couldn’t say no.

One thing I speculated is that North must be on the side of that guy next door. This means North is probably supporting him because North has always wanted me to have a boyfriend, and he’s quite close to him too. Previously, he suggested I give it a try, and after his investigation, he approved.

I don’t mind who supports whom; it doesn’t make me uncomfortable or troubled. Nothing can make me uncomfortable except clothes that are too tight and anything that’s pressing down or tightly wrapped around me, like when a child ghost once sat on my chest or when the guy next door hugged me too tightly last night; that’s what discomfort means to me.

I don’t know if Ter and Cat know yet, but if North knows, then pretty much the whole world knows, unless we specifically ask North to keep it a secret. If that’s the case, the secret will remain a secret as long as North doesn’t get drunk and spill it. I think the thing about the guy next door won’t stay a secret for long; it seems like he wants everyone to know more to keep others from bothering me.    If no one really bothers me, that would be great. I get quite annoyed when anyone who isn’t a client tries to contact or mess with my life, whether it’s through messages, showing up unannounced, or even sending stuff over.

But it’s not like I’m not annoyed by the guy next door. I am annoyed by him too, but as I know, there’s nothing I can do with any words I might try to come up with; he listens only to himself.

But he wasn’t entirely wrong when he said that since I’ve decided not to have anyone in my life. I hope it wouldn’t be so chaotic that I’d lose my mind from exhaustion. But from the looks of it, my life won’t be peaceful until he gives up and stops bothering me.

I don’t know how long he’ll keep this up. At first, I thought he was just curious because I’m different from anyone he’s met, but his eyes and expression were more serious than that, which made me uncomfortable. And when I said it would be better for him to find someone else, I meant it. I’m not much more than what you see; personally, I think I’m even boring. From what I know, he could definitely find someone better than me.

North has bragged about how rich the guy is, which seems true judging by the car he drives and the things he uses. He’s smart, obviously, since he’s studying medicine, and he’s quite good-looking. As for his character, I don’t like to judge anyone’s personality as bad because I’m not great myself, so let’s skip that part. In summary, he should use the time he’s spending on liking me to do something more fun.

    “Hey.”

    “Hmm?”

“You know what I’m going to ask, so tell me what happened last night.”

    “Didn’t you already ask him?”

“No, I want to hear from you first before I ask him. So, how did it go?”    “Nothing much, he just said he likes me and wants to be with me. He didn’t listen to my refusals either, so now he’s made a deal to stay with me.”

“Oh really?” North grinned broadly, “Think about it, the freest guy in the world like Phii Arthit wants to be with you.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“The fact that he doesn’t listen to you shows how stubborn he is, right? This is what they mean when they say the world revolves around Arthit. Now, the sun is revolving around the stars, which is you.”

“…Oh, is that how it is?”

“Yeah, that’s right. Even though he’s studying medicine for some reason I don’t fully understand but you probably know, he doesn’t care about anything, does what he wants, goes where he wants, he’s super free. Nothing can stop that guy anymore.”

    “I see.”

“Of course, he doesn’t tie himself to anyone, anything, or any place, but Phii Jo once said he’s very family-oriented, which means you’re that important to him.”    “Ah, I see.” I nodded, understanding now. We had switched to walking around the track so North could talk more comfortably, “North, you’re very clear about this.”

    “What’s so clear?”

    “I’m supporting him.”

    “Fuck, bullshit!!, I’m neutral.”

    “Your voice is so high.”

“If you don’t like him, just say it, I’ll help out.”

    “I don’t like him.”

“Why? He’s not that bad, he’s incredibly good-looking, very popular too. This might help make your work more known, more people would hire you, he’s filthy rich, to boot. If there’s ever a time you don’t want to work, he can support you for life. And as for being talented, you don’t even need to check what he studies.” “Hmm, that’s quite the biased neutrality.” I said, and North burst out laughing loudly, in a good mood.

“I would mention the downsides too, okay? The obvious downside is that he talks like a dog, his mouth is terrible, his words are crude, uncivilized, rough, and rude. He doesn’t listen to others, just does what he wants. If he’s unhappy, he’ll curse you out, if he’s really angry, he’ll punch you, hot-tempered, doesn’t care about others, low patience, easily annoyed, shameless.”

    “Sounds like you, North.”

“Huh? Are you saying I’m like him, Phipungto? I thought we were best friends, you asshole, go die.”

“I mean, the hot-headedness, the temper. If you’re not happy, you curse, if you’re really angry, you’ll fight, sometimes crudely.”

“I’m hot-headed?” the person beside me asked, furrowing his brows in disbelief.

“You should ask everyone North has punched in the face.”

    “How do you know that!”

“Ter often tells me, North likes to get into fights with others, and can’t be stopped unless his boyfriend threatens him; that’s when he’ll listen.”

“Fuck Ter, I can’t stand him. That day he was hanging clothes on the balcony, I should have pushed him off to his death.”

“If you did that, Ter would definitely haunt you as a ghost.”

“Yeah, fuck. Forget it. Being a human is already scary enough.” North said.    “North, if your boyfriend threatens you, will you comply? So you’re afraid of your boyfriend, huh?” I asked.

“Oh, don’t say that. When it’s about love, I don’t want to make him uncomfortable, angry, or feel bad. When he’s angry, it’s scary, so it’s better if we can compromise on things.”

North said this in a soft tone, which made me smile inadvertently.

“From the crazy, silly you to this, love is really strange, so hard to understand.”

“Really? I think it’s pretty simple.”

    “Huh?”

“I’m someone who sees things straightforwardly, I guess. For me, love is love, everything else is just everything else. If you’re scared, it’s normal; be scared because there’s no guarantee it won’t happen. Just ask yourself if you can handle what you’re afraid of if it does happen.”

    “…”

“There must be someone who makes you feel that way, makes you want to love them so much you forget your fear.”

    “…”

    “Oh, I’m so cool.”

“Was that how you thought when you started dating North’s partner?”

“Well, I’ve told you before, right? When I first met Phii Jo, I got into a fight with the new partner of my ex, and Phii Jo helped me out. I was still hurt by my ex, but I didn’t start dating Phii Jo to forget her. At that time, my head was clear of my ex because Phii Jo came into my life. And there were so many rumors about Phii Jo, everyone warned me not to get involved, but I didn’t listen. I liked him; I wanted to be with him, to love him. That’s all there was to it. Even if he leaves me tomorrow, I won’t regret the decision to be with him because the time we spent together was damn good.”

“…Oh, I see. Because North is the type to charge head-on into everything, right?”    “Yeah, that’s right. Phii Arthit is probably the same. He’s probably banging his head against your wall right now.”

    “…”

“And why am I suddenly telling my story? Whatever. It’s just a small case to let you know that for me, love isn’t that complicated. Not wanting to open your heart because you’re afraid it’ll be like that jerk, I get it. But why let that jerk keep hurting you over and over?”

“Hurting me over and over? What do you mean?”

“It wasn’t enough that he deceived you once; he’s also making you miss out on meeting good people who are ready to love and care for you. Why let someone you say you no longer care about continue to haunt you?”

“If you say you don’t care anymore, then forget everything about it, forget everything he’s ever done, isn’t it because his story is still buried in your heart that you’re still afraid?”

    “…”

North’s words left me speechless. I never thought about it, but he might be right. If I tell myself I no longer care about that person, why am I still letting his story linger in my heart if I’ve said I’ve moved on? Why haven’t the wounds he inflicted healed? Why can he still hurt me repeatedly?

“What you said is true…I thought I had let go of him, but what kind of letting go is there when the wounds he left are still buried in my heart? Thank you.”

    “Why the thanks?”

“If you hadn’t said it, I really wouldn’t have thought about it. And now, I’m a little upset that I realize I’m still letting him hurt me with the same old issues.”

“I never told you that, did I?”    “No.” I shook my head.

“Well, why didn’t I tell you? This is basic stuff, man.”

“Maybe you forgot, you forgot a lot.”

“Is that so? And now, how are you feeling?”

“Well…okay. If I weren’t afraid of getting hurt the same way again, I’d probably feel better.”

“And will you open your heart to my brother too, right?” North asked excitedly. “But just because I’ve moved on from the old wounds doesn’t mean I can open my heart.”

    “Why not?”

    “I don’t like him.”

“Oh, come on! You just praised how great he is, all his annoying habits – I don’t have a problem with them. Since you accept me, accepting my senior’s low behavior shouldn’t be an issue.”

“I don’t have a problem with vulgarity or anything like that, but…how to put it. I think I’m more comfortable being alone.”

“Oh, but you’ve cleared up your feelings about that issue, right?” North raised his eyebrows. I nodded in response.

“Not opening your heart because of past wounds can’t be the reason anymore; the only reason now is that you prefer being alone.”

“Oh, I don’t know about this one, but if one day you realize that having it is better than being alone, would you open your heart?”

“Better than being alone…hmm, I can’t even imagine how that would be better.”

“That’s its job to show you how it’s better having it around, huh? Hey, Phii

Arthit, do you owe me a drink or not?”

“So, he really hired you, huh?”

“No, man! I’m neutral! Don’t you understand?”

    “Oh, I see, neutral then.”

    Arthit

“And will your wife side with me?” I asked while playing one-on-one basketball with Jo. Even though he’s the football team captain, he says he’s not bad at basketball either. Look, he’s panting, but my score hasn’t moved at all, damn it.

“Try buying him a couple of drinks, he’ll be on your side completely.”

    “Really?”

“Yeah, but just this much should be enough for him to side with you, I guess.”

    “Why?”

“Because he cheers for everyone.” Jo replied while trying to steal the ball from me, his eyes focused solely on the ball as he spoke. I stretched up a bit, still dribbling with one hand while using the other to wipe sweat with my shirt, “You’re too careless, damn it.”

Before he successfully stole the ball. I guarded him closely, fighting back for the ball. This situation repeated several times over the minutes.

“Can I score just one point? I’m panting like a dog here.”

“I’m panting too, but not like a dog.”

“Damn.” I laughed out loud, “What do you think about someone who still has old wounds? I’ve told you, I’m not him.”

“I don’t know. If it bothers you that much, why don’t you just kill that bastard, maybe he’ll feel relieved.”

“Good idea, I just beat him up to the hospital, it seems like it wasn’t enough. But how can I kill someone who’s already in the hospital?”

“Transfer him to Fah’s hospital and have Fah cooperate, I think it’s easy.”    “Oh, damn, how did you come up with that? If this gets out, everything would be screwed.” I said, unable to stop laughing at how we were talking about such nonsense as if it were serious. Of course, it’s just for fun, you bastard. Anyone who thinks it’s real is being fooled.

“It’s fine, Fah probably won’t mind.”

“Really, will he still hang out with us?”

“He will, I guess. Just because he went bankrupt once or twice doesn’t mean we’re not friends anymore; you can consult Hill, his relative is a partner.”

    “A partner in the hospital.”

“A partner in the gambling den, spit, what the hell, man.”

“But aren’t you a partner in a gambling den too? I remember.”

    “Call it a casino.”

“It’s against my morals, I can’t accept that.”

“Seriously, what of the five precepts can you actually keep?”

“What are they again? Wait, I don’t follow Buddhism, so I don’t need to keep the precepts.”

    “Yeah, me neither.”

“So being a shareholder in a gambling den is fine then?” I raised my eyebrows to ask.

“Correct, exactly, and you cheating on someone’s wife is fine too.” Said Jo.    “That’s not quite right, she didn’t tell me she was married.” I said, displeased, recalling past events. When I fought with a local husband due to a

misunderstanding, and of course, in the end, I won but ended up spending a night in jail because of the brawl and the damage to his shop. Not wanting to be nagged by Direk, I got Jo to bail me out, and I got teased to hell, “Damn, she didn’t tell me she was married.”

“Damn.” Jo burst out laughing, “You’re a complete buffoon, the idiot who ended up in jail. You called me late at night, drunk, Jo, I’m in the cell here, come bail me out, I thought you got caught with some purple meth or something. But it turned out you beat up her husband and got thrown in jail, damn fool.”

“My meth isn’t purple, man, it’s rainbow, I told you.”

“What kind of moron has rainbow meth, you’re such an idiot, everything you talk about is nonsense.”

“Well, with a nonsensical person like you, we get along just fine.” I said, still laughing, until Jo looked towards the gym entrance. I followed his gaze to see those two walking in, looking not the least bit tired.

“Why don’t they look tired at all?”

“I bet they didn’t run, they walked.”

“Come on, you invited me to go running.”

“I admit I was walking the whole time. I only agreed to come out for exercise because you forced me to buy new shoes.”

“Oh, that’s why your miserly wife runs errands, huh? To make it worth it.”    “Yep.” Jo nodded, dropping the ball to the floor. We walked over to someone who had just arrived, sitting in the first row of the stands. I sat down next to the short guy.

“Tired?” He asked, and I nodded in response, then he handed me a bottle of water. I raised an eyebrow in surprise, “Fuck, damn, is this real? You like me now?”

“Cool down, man, he just bought the water for that crazy guy.” North interjected.    “North told me to buy it.” the guy who handed me the bottle replied. I shrugged indifferently before opening the bottle and taking a drink.

“And? In the end, you bought it for me.”

I said this while turning to look at the face of the person sitting next to me. He looked up slightly to meet my gaze, raised his hand to gently ruffle his own hair, and then gave me a broad smile.

       “Thanks.”

    “…”

       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 21: Let Me

       Daotok

The temperature of the warm water was just right for my skin, with music playing softly alongside a scent that tickled my nose. I leaned back against the edge of the tub, allowing myself to relax after just half a day outside, yet feeling inexplicably exhausted.

At first, being with North was quite comforting until we went out for dinner with the guy from the next room and North. What started as just a strange feeling turned into something that left me mentally drained as it is now.

I couldn’t overlook the incident on his motorcycle where he made me hug him if I wanted him to slow down. In that situation, I had no other choice but to really hug him, and certainly not willingly.

It would be hard to consider it normal; he might have just wanted to tease me, but I couldn’t see how teasing me would be fun. Or if he actually wanted me to hug him, why would he want me to do that? Because it felt good for him or what?    Maybe because Ter and Cat often hug or hold hands, I’ve become somewhat accustomed to a certain level of physical contact, but hugging someone I’m not close with like the guy next door was very strange for me.

Humans are warm-blooded, so naturally, their bodies are warm, and he’s no different. I remember when I hugged him, he wasn’t as soft as Ter or Cat, but it felt safe. It had to feel that way since he was my only anchor to keep me from falling off the motorcycle.

Since I’ve never thought of myself as someone worth noticing, I didn’t think he might be interested in me. But if, let’s say…just suppose that was true, I would have to say I wouldn’t want it to be that way. If he’s going to like or be interested in me, he might as well spend his life doing something else.

But whatever, as long as there’s no trouble.

I gently washed the bruise on my neck with warm water, hoping it would fade more. Thinking about it carefully, it might have been done by the guy next door.

Because with the ghost in the room, we’ve always lived in peace.

If it was him, that would be quite infuriating. I let him sleep in my room, and he still hurt the host. What a bad character that guy has.

After soaking to my satisfaction, I got out of the tub, checked the bruise on my neck in the mirror, and found it had faded significantly. I got dressed and walked out of the bathroom.

I checked my phone to see if Cat had replied to my message asking if he could bring Mr. Jeon back to me since I only have a motorcycle, which isn’t very convenient. But Cat’s chat still shows as unread.

I sat at my work desk and began preparing for a new project I’ve just taken on. After working for a while, I heard a knock at the door. I took off my headphones and went to peek through the peephole, finding it was the guy from the next room standing on the other side of the door.

“What’s up?” I asked without even opening the door.

    “Open up.”

    “What do you want?”

“Nothing.” He replied with a calm face, “Just want to be with you.”

“No, thanks.” I answered quietly, stepping back from the door intending to return to my seat, but I stopped in my tracks when I heard his voice from the other side.    “I can break this door down.”

    “…”

    “At least it’ll be damaged.”

I sighed without realizing it, reluctantly walked back to open the door, and before I could react, he extended his arm to keep me from closing the door on him again, then pushed his way in. He took off his slippers and set them aside before walking into the room.

A black T-shirt with sweatpants and slippers, carrying just one shoulder bag, looking casual, different from when we met earlier. He dropped his bag by the sofa near my work desk.

       “What are you doing?”

    “Working on an assignment.”

    “I see.”

“So, what’s up?” I asked in my usual calm tone, watching him sit down on the sofa and take some documents out of his bag.

“Didn’t I say that already?” He answered casually, as if this was a normal thing for him to do. When he said “Didn’t I say already?” Did he mean wanting to be with me?

       “Why stay here?”

“Just want to, why? I won’t disturb you, I’ve got books to read too.” He said, waving the sheets in his hand to show me.

“Why not stay in your own room?”

“I told you, I want to be with you.”

“…” I sighed in frustration. No matter what I say, it’s probably pointless, so whatever, as long as he doesn’t disturb me, it’s fine.

I sat back down at my work desk and focused on the computer screen again.

“Let me ask you something first?”

    “Uh-huh.”

    “My painting job.”

    “Will you take it?”

“Not in a hurry.” He answered with a shrug.

“Then, I’ll take it next week.”

    “Okay.”

And then I put on my headphones, playing the sound of rain to enhance my concentration while working. After some time, feeling stiff, I moved a bit, catching sight of the intruder stretched out on the sofa with headphones on, reading sheets comfortably.

I went back to focusing on my work until I realized it was 9 PM. I got up from the desk, thinking it was time to rest my eyes, noticing the person on the sofa was now asleep. Why sleep on someone else’s sofa? Why not go to your own bed?

       Want to stay here, huh?

So you threatened to break down the door, did you?

And I believed he would really do it if I didn’t open up for him. Even though I didn’t want to, someone was now sleeping on my sofa.

I went out to the balcony to get some fresh air and called North. He answered quickly, sounding unusually excited.

(Oh! What’s up? How’s it going?)

“Why do you ask how it’s going?”

(Uh…oh, well, nothing, forget it, what’s up?)

       “The guy next door.”

    (What’s with him?)

“North, you’re getting too excited.” I said back because the voice on the other end sounded too excited to be natural, like he was waiting for something.

    (Not at all!Tell me, quick!)

“He’s sleeping on my sofa, he’s already asleep.”

(Yeah, oh!, Why did he sleep there?)

“He said he wanted to be with me or something.”

(…Wow, wow, oh my, that’s direct~, and then what?)

“Nothing. I just wanted to ask how to get him out of my room.”

(Oh, don’t you want to be with him?)

“…That’s an odd question.” I furrowed my brows slightly, “Why should I want to?”

(Oh, I see, yeah, oh well, that’s sad.) I heard North let out a big sigh, (Wake him up and kick him out then.)

“I feel like it’s not going to work somehow.”

    (Why?)

“At first, I didn’t open the door for him, and he threatened to break it down.” (Wow…oh, damn) the voice sounded resigned about something, (I shouldn’t have told him to do whatever he wants.)

       “What?”

(He’s like this, if he wants to be with you, he’ll be with you, he’s a crazy person who doesn’t care about anything.)

       “Hmm.”

    (You, you’re so cold.)

“What am I supposed to do?”

(Even now you’re still like this, can’t you feel it at all?)

“Huh?” I raised my eyebrows slightly, “Feel it? …Oh, I think I know.”

(Really? Can you react a bit then?)

“Hmm.” I only replied that, my gaze wandering outside to relax my eyes after using them intensely.

(Sigh, to be honest, I thought it would be like this from the start) North said, sounding tired, (But, but, I’m rooting for you to open up. I’ve interrogated him, and I approve.)

“So, you asked about my boyfriend today because of this?”

(Exactly, see, you didn’t believe me. I’ve introduced you to so many friends.

If you chose one of them, you wouldn’t have to deal with someone like him.)

       “…Oh, is that so?”

(Just kidding, meeting him might be for the best…maybe. I mean, well, I can’t say, I’m not going to interfere.)

“So, how are we going to get him out of my room?”

(Give up, the most self-centered person in the world is Phii Arthit.)

       “Did you finish your work?”

I heard someone’s voice from behind, slowly turning around to see it was the person who must have just woken up from napping on the sofa, the one I was discussing with North. He was leaning against the wall, looking a bit groggy, before running his hand through his messy hair to fix it, and walked towards me.

    “Just taking a break.”

    (Has he come?) North asked.

    “Yeah. That’s it for now.”

    (Okay.)

Then I hung up because it wasn’t appropriate to talk on the phone with someone else in the room.

“When are you going back?” I turned to ask the person standing next to me, leaning against the balcony.

“Don’t know, until I feel like going back, I guess.”

And our balcony corner returned to silence once again. I turned to go back inside to continue working, but he grabbed my wrist from behind. I looked back at him, confused.

He gently guided my hand to touch his cheek. I wanted to pull my hand back, but I couldn’t match his strength.

“You, damn.” He said while still holding my hand and looking at me, “Seriously, I was thinking for about half an hour before coming to see you, wondering what to do.”

    “…”    !!

Suddenly, he pulled me into a hug. I was startled and tried to push him away, but as I thought, it was ineffective.

I could smell his faint scent and feel the warmth from the person in front of me.

How could I not smell it when we were this close?

I tried my hardest to push him away, but with such close proximity, I couldn’t do anything.

“Stop it, it’s pointless.” His voice sounded like that of a victor, which annoyed me quite a bit, especially as he tightened his hug until it was uncomfortable.

He said that after I tried to wriggle out of his embrace.

“Let go. Or I’ll step on your foot.”

“Oh, you warned me first, but go ahead and step, you’re too small to hurt me.”    And as he said, I didn’t have enough strength to hurt him, despite having just worked hard and only coming out for some fresh air to relax, but now I felt even more tired, not just physically but mentally too.

“Yeah, just stay still, like this, it’s much better.”

    “Satisfied yet?”

    “Not yet.”

“Sigh.” I let out a big sigh and let it go.

“Ha ha, you give up so easily.”

    “Do I?”

Isn’t it that I just can’t fight his strength?

       “Come on, hug me back.”

“No way.” I answered. He didn’t say anything more before leaning down, bringing his face close to my head. Though I couldn’t see, it felt like he was sniffing my hair, so I started to frown and made a sound of displeasure.    “Okay, okay, I’ll let go.” He said before loosening his embrace but still not letting go of my wrist. I sighed in relief, looking up at him with annoyance,

    “Angry?”

“Yeah, let go, I have work to do.”

“Aren’t you going to ask anything?” He asked, raising an eyebrow curiously,

    “Like why I hugged you.”

“I don’t want to know at all.”

“So, if anyone hugs you, you won’t say anything?”

“I would.” I answered, “And do I look willing?”

“Your voice is so harsh.” He said while still smiling, clearly enjoying himself,

    “You really don’t like it?”

    “Hmm.”

“That’s a reaction that suits you.” It seemed like he was having fun teasing me or doing whatever it was to annoy me, but my feelings were turning into boredom instead.

“Won’t you let go?” I asked, looking at the hand he was holding, not letting go no matter how much I tried to shake it off.

    “What if I say no?”

“…Follow me.” I said only that before turning to walk into the room with the person who wouldn’t let go of my hand following behind. I sat down in the work chair.

       “What’s this about?”

    “Working.”

    “And my hand?”

    “You won’t let go yourself.”

“Fuck, wait, so you’re just going to let me hold your hand like this?” He looked surprised and let out a small laugh. I nodded in response. Just like when I first moved into the room, with Phii Donat scratching the walls, the sound of crying in the bathroom, even the sounds of people jumping off the building or shadows flitting about. I just ignored it as long as it didn’t bother me.

“Uh-huh.” I just answered before lifting my free hand to grab the mouse pen and continue drawing. I heard the person standing there laugh for a while before he sat down on the floor beside me, still not letting go of my hand.

    “Sitting on the floor?”

“Yeah, your room has only one chair, which is the one you’re sitting on, isn’t it tiring to stand?”

…If you just let go of my hand, you wouldn’t have to sit on the floor like this.    “Then you’re good with that hand, huh?” He asked, referring to the hand I was currently using to draw since he was holding the less dominant one.

    “Yeah.”

“So like you, you bastard, do whatever you want, is this how you work?” He teased in good spirits. I’ve never had the experience of drawing while someone sat on the floor next to me, holding my hand, “This could be bad work if you don’t stop me.”

    “…”

“If I get carried away and do more, it’ll be your problem.”

“Don’t do it.” I said, my eyes still focused on the computer screen, “I don’t like it.”

“Don’t like me holding your hand?”

    “I don’t like you.”

    “It’s not wasted effort then.”

“Stop it.” I said with a calm tone, but it seemed like those words had no effect on the person playing with my hand, “It’s a waste of time.”

    “You mean what I’m doing?”

    “Yes.”

“Why waste time? It’s damn good to be with you.”

    “…”

His words made my hand, which was drawing, stop. I turned my chair slightly towards the person sitting there.

“Why do you look so stunned?”

He asked while looking up at me. This angle was quite strange since I’d never had to look down at him before.

Did you sit on the floor just to hold my hand?

While I couldn’t find any words to say, he let out a small sigh before his expression started to become more serious.

       “I like you.”

    “…”

“I don’t know what or how, but I genuinely like you.”

Silence enveloped the room. I was stunned by the direct confession of love, which I had heard for the first time.

“Sorry.” I said softly. However, it’s better to clearly reject him, “But I don’t think of you that way. Give up.”

    “No.”

He answered with a slight shrug, completely indifferent.

“I knew you’d say that. It might work with others, but not with me, I tell you.”

    “This is difficult for me.”

“Is it? Then it’ll have to be difficult.”

I looked at him as he played with my hand, wondering what to say next.    “You must have done little good in your past lives to have someone like me like you. Just accept it because I’m not backing off.”

“I’ll go do some more merit-making.”

    “I’ll take you.”

“Sigh, it won’t change anything. You might just be interested because you’ve never met someone as strange as me.”

“It’s not me thinking of you. I like you, that’s why I don’t want to curse you out.”

“Sigh, just let me be alone.”

“Just let me stay with you, someone like me isn’t easy to find, right? Just think that your life will get a bit more chaotic with me around. I’ll try not to do things you don’t like. Just don’t kick me out, okay?”

    “…”

“And about that mark on your neck, I did it. Last night, I was a bit careless because you smell so damn good, it made me lose my mind, probably because I was drunk too. But I won’t do it again, I feel sorry for causing you pain.”    “It hurt.”

    “Sorry.”

    “…”

“Anything else to argue about? No objection means we have a deal.”

    “What deal?”

    “Let me stay with you.”

    “No way.”

    “Why?”

“You know why…” I said in a weary voice. No matter what I say, he has an answer for everything. What North said about him being the most stubborn person in the world seems true. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t listen to others like this.

    “About Khram?”

    “Yeah.”

“Don’t worry, I don’t care that you had an ex.”

    “…That’s not it.”

“Then what, are you scared I’ll hurt you like he did?”

I didn’t reply, just sighed again, hoping it would help me relax a bit, staring at the screen with the unfinished drawing.

“I’ve never had a boyfriend, so I don’t know how it feels.” He said before gently tugging my arm, “What’s up, look me in the eyes.”

“Why do I need to look you in the eyes?” I asked, turning to look down at him, meeting his sharp, dark, beautiful eyes that I never noticed were so beautiful, making me want to try drawing them.

“To talk about something important, are you ready? I prepared this from North’s room, man.”

    “You went to North’s room?”

“Yeah, but that’s not the point. Are you ready to listen?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“I’ve never had anything to do with love or any of that crap. I wasn’t even interested in it and if I hadn’t met you first; I’d probably die alone. You’re the first person I’ve felt this way about, and do you know what? I tried to get over you, but

I couldn’t. I won’t feel this way about anyone else.”

“As for you, even if you don’t feel anything for me, I don’t care. All I want is to be with you, that’s it.”

“So, since you won’t have anyone else…

    “Let me be with you.”

I listened intently from the first word to the last, unconsciously holding my breath. I didn’t know how I should feel because all the emotions were mixed up. I was stunned that he thought of me that way, surprised it was me, and couldn’t believe I was hearing something like this.

“Let me ask something.” He spoke up to break the silence while I was still speechless.

    “What?”

“Does it feel bad when I hug you?”

    “It feels bad.”

    “How bad?”

    “Uncomfortable.”

    “Why?”

    “You hug too tightly.”

“Then next time, I’ll be gentler.” He said, “Give me a chance, I’m not that asshole Khram, don’t judge me by him. Anyway, since you’re not going to be with anyone, just let me stay with you. That’s all.”

“If that’s the case, you’re the one who will be hurt.”

“Why? Are you saying you’ll never like me no matter what?”

“What if I said that’s how it is?”

“I just said it doesn’t matter what you think, but I believe you’ll end up liking me back.”

    “…Sigh.”

“Sighing like this means you’ve given up, right?”

“Yeah, I’m tired, I don’t want to argue anymore.”

“Okay.” He said cheerfully, “Then we have a deal. Oh, I have one condition.”

    “What?”

“You can’t be with anyone else…absolutely, because you said you’d never be with anyone else in your life. Don’t tell me you won’t be with anyone but then choose to have a boyfriend and leave me like a dog, I won’t accept that.”

Before I could reply, the person sitting suddenly stood up and let go of my hand. Because he had been holding it for so long, this hand felt very warm. He stood in front of me, leaned down, and kissed my forehead before pulling back.    “Let me have some bonus.” He said with a pleased smile on the corner of his mouth, “I’ll leave for now.” He went to pick up his things by the sofa and left the room. When I heard the door close, I thought I could finally breathe, but then I heard the door open again.

“Oh. Don’t pressure yourself, take your time to like me, I won’t rush you.”

    “…”

       “Okay, huh?”

    “You look really pale.”

“My face is normally like this.”

    “Really? And what’s that mark?”

“The ghost in the room.” I answered North’s question. This class was a free elective that any faculty could enroll in, so North, needing credits, decided to take it with me while Ter and Cat didn’t join.

At first, it was a bit unusual to have a friend in class since I usually studied alone. North would chat a bit, nap, or play games, which made my class time more interesting.

The navy blue shirt of the person sneakily eating snacks next to me was quite noticeable among the white student uniforms. Since it was a mixed class with students from various faculties, the engineering shirt stood out.

“The ghost in the room bit you?” North raised his eyebrows in surprise, and I nodded in response, “What did you do to provoke it? Why was it so violent? Let me see.” Then he took the liberty to pull down my collar to look at the mark.

“I didn’t do anything to provoke it, but I’ve already told it not to do it again.”

“Will it listen to that? But, wow, ghosts have sharp teeth.”

    “Do they?”

“Yeah, right here.” North said, opening his mouth and pointing to his own canines as an example. I touched the mark on my neck again.

    “I didn’t even notice.”

“If you told me it was a werewolf or vampire, I’d believe it.”

“It might be a vampire then, so last night I must have been drained of blood.”    “Oh. That explains why you look so pale, that’s how it is.” North seemed to understand something and chuckled a bit, making me smile inadvertently. Being with North was good for clearing my mind, “And how’s Phii Arthit doing? Last night, you threw him on the floor in your room, right?”

“Nothing much.” I answered. The other seemed to be pondering something, “Is there something?”

“No.” North shook his head, “If there’s nothing, then that’s good.”

“Did you bring your motorcycle?” I asked, remembering that today North had classes all day, so he had to bring his motorcycle himself since his free time didn’t align with his partner’s. If his partner was free, they would give him a ride.

    “I brought it, why?”

“Can I get a ride back with you?”

“Oh. Didn’t you come by motorcycle?”

    “No.”

“Then how did you get here?”

    “My neighbor dropped me off.”

“…” My answer made North go silent and furrow his brows in confusion, “Why did he come to drop you off?”

    “He said I was sick.”

    “Are you sick?”

“I had a fever last night, but I think I’m okay now.”

“Oh, uh…hmm.” North pressed his lips together tightly, seeming to think hard.

Why does he have to look so troubled just because I asked for a ride?

“It’s okay if you don’t want to.”

“No, no, no, it’s just…okay, I’ll take you back to your dorm.”

    “Thanks.”

    “Yeah.”

After getting confirmation from North that he would take me back to the dorm, I secretly took out my phone to message the guy next door, telling him he didn’t need to pick me up anymore.

SS: You don’t need to come pick me up anymore.

       ☀︎😕

       ☀︎: Why?

I don’t know why, but seeing his reply like this, the image of his displeased face and his gruff voice came to mind. I guess I’ve been spending too much time with him lately.

    SS: Going back with North.

☀︎: How did North get here?

SS: I had class together with North.

       ☀︎: Free elective?

       SS: Yes.

☀︎: Doesn’t Jo take him to class?

SS: North had classes from early morning.

☀︎: Can he come to drop you off?

    SS: Yes, I asked.

And then he didn’t reply anymore. So I put away my phone and focused on studying, catching a glimpse of the person next to me secretly using their phone under the table, but I didn’t pay much attention.

☀︎: Do you want your tires to burst?

       Nrth: What?

       Nrth: Oh, lol

Nrth: Wasn’t you trying to get over someone?

Nrth: You come to drop him off, huh? Wow, have you ever done this before?

       Nrth: Giggle

       ☀︎: Fuck off

Nrth:. If you’re not happy, just curse

       Nrth: Softly

☀︎: What do you want with me?

       Nrth: What, what?

Nrth: Do you like my friend?

       ☀︎: Yes

       ☀︎: I like him

       ☀︎: Are you satisfied now?

☀︎: I’ll pick him up and take him out to eat too.

       Nrth: Let’s go, go, go

       ☀︎: So damn annoying.

Nrth: I don’t trust you, huh?

Nrth: I’m keeping an eye on you.

Nrth: That mark on his neck was your doing, right? Answer me!

Nrth: You opportunist, I trusted you to sleep in my friend’s room.

Nrth: Understand, man. I like him, how can I help it?

Nrth: With the person I like sleeping next to you, how could someone like you endure it?

       Nrth: Right?

☀︎: Is that your husband cursing?

☀︎: When Jo was courting you, he was quite something.

       Nrth: …

       Nrth: And then what?

Nrth: Are you going to pursue him?

       Nrth: Would that be good?

Nrth: Have you thought it through?

       ☀︎: I don’t know.

       Nrth: We’ll talk later.

Nrth: We have a lot more to discuss!

       Nrth: Tonight, I’ll join you.

       Nrth: To keep watch! Watch!

Nrth: I’ll keep an eye on you! Dylan!

☀︎: But he has to ride with me.

       Nrth: No

Nrth: He is riding with me!

☀︎: Are you trying to steal my thunder?

☀︎: He has to go back with me anyway, doesn’t he?

    Nrth:. Sure

    Nrth: *sends picture

    Nrth: Here’s a picture

Nrth: Phipungto is studying very hard

       Nrth: Hehe

       ☀︎: Why send it?

Nrth: Don’t let him know I saved it secretly

       ☀︎: Yeah, saved it.

       ☀︎: LOL

       Nrth: LOL

       …

       Daotok

       “Phipungto.”

    “What?”

“I just remembered my bike’s tire is low on air. It could be dangerous to have a passenger, and it’s hard enough to drive alone.”

“Oh really, then it’s fine.” I nodded in response before turning my attention back to the lecturer standing at the front of the room. Earlier, it seemed like North had taken a sneaky photo of me, but whatever, he likes to take pictures of others when they’re not looking or making funny faces. I wonder if there are any good photos on his phone.

The person North teases the most with candid photos is Ter. Being cursed out or receiving annoyed reactions from Ter is considered a success for North. Those two used to be roommates until they both got partners and moved out.    Cat never gets caught in candid photos because he’s always aware when someone tries to take a picture, maybe it’s a photographer’s instinct. As for me, I’ve been photographed too, sometimes I know but pretend not to, like just now. North once complained that teasing me isn’t as fun as teasing Ter because I don’t make a fuss.

“And how will you get back? Will you have Phii Arthit pick you up?”

    “I guess I’ll walk.”

    “Why?”

“I haven’t gone for a walk around the mountain for a while now.”

“It’s chill.” North said with a slight pout, “So why didn’t you ask Phii Arthit to give you a ride to enjoy the view?”

    “No.”

    “Why?”

“I  should be asking why I have to ask him.” I replied, looking confused. North laughed for no apparent reason; he’s always like this, can laugh at anything in the world.

“You once said you didn’t want a boyfriend, right?”

“Yeah, so why are you suddenly asking about this?”

“No reason.” North shrugged, “Do you have a type? I could introduce you to someone.”

Because North had mentioned that several of his friends were interested in me and I was still single, he seemed eager to make introductions. Even though I had already said I didn’t want anyone, North seemed to want me to at least consider opening up. It’s out of good intentions since everyone keeps complaining that I don’t take care of myself and they want someone to look after me.

But even if I say that, I still stand by my decision to stay single.

       “I don’t know. I’m not interested.” I answered.

“If they’re good-looking, would you be interested?”

    “Hmm?”

    “Good-looking, rich, stuff like that.”

    “No.”

    “Why?”

“What do you like about your boyfriend, North?” I asked back, which seemed to surprise him, but he still answered.

    “He’s good to me.”

    “Oh, um.”

“Do you want someone who’s good to you?”    “No.” I shook my head gently.

“Do you like someone who’s an asshole to you?”

“No.” I answered in a flat tone, turning to him, “I don’t like anyone.”

“Wow, what’s that, you’ve got a heart of steel.” North looked displeased, as he often does when things don’t go his way, sitting with his chin resting on his knees, staring at me instead of at the front of the class. Fortunately, it’s a large lecture hall, so the professor doesn’t notice much.

    “North.”

    “What?”

“Why are you staring at me?”

“I’m just assessing you.” North answered while stroking his chin. Why do I feel like lately, I’ve been stared at a lot? What’s going on? “Hmm…you’re quite goodlooking. Even if you’re not as good-looking as me.”

    “…Thanks.”

“But you act all gloomy. It doesn’t suit you.”

“It’s fine. If I were as lively as North, I’d probably die of exhaustion.”    “Not having as much energy as me is kind of a shame.” North said with a halfsmile, “Back to the original topic, are you really going to walk back?” I nodded in response, and he sighed.

“Should you call Phii Arthit to pick you up? You came with him.”

“It’s fine.” I answered, jotting down what the professor was saying, unlike North who had lost interest in the lecture halfway through. When exams come close, he’ll probably ask to borrow my lecture notes again.

“Do you hate him?” He raised his eyebrows to ask.

    “No.”

“Then why don’t you let him pick you up?”

    “I can walk.”

“Isn’t it more convenient if he picks you up?”

“It’s really fine.” I answered honestly because I had already told him I’d go back with North, but if North couldn’t take me, I didn’t want to bother anyone else, and walking back wasn’t a problem anyway.

“You seem to live life without needing to rely on others.” He said, “Let’s eat together, have Phii Arthit pick you up, and we’ll go eat together.”

“We can eat just the two of us.”

“I’m going to eat with Phii Arthit too…”

“…” I furrowed my brows slightly, turning to look at him, starting to find North’s behavior strange, but seeing North’s grumpy face, I stopped wondering, “Okay then.”

    “Good.”

I took out my phone again and typed a message to inform my neighbor that I needed him to pick me up again and that North would be joining for the meal. Then I went back to paying attention to what the professor was saying. North, on the other hand, was listening on and off, probably because the lecture was genuinely boring, plus engineers like North probably aren’t into chemistry like this anyway.    When class ended, I packed my bag and walked downstairs with North. The parking area in front of the faculty had become a focal point for many, especially women, as a tall guy was leaning against a sleek big bike, seemingly looking for someone. When his gaze stopped at me and North, he froze.

North and I walked over to him.

“Annoying, everywhere we go, people keep staring.” North teased, and the one being teased just shrugged indifferently.

“It’s normal, and you’re going with us, right?”

    “Yeah.”

“Why are you here? Go back to your husband.” He said, not seriously. North didn’t reply, just pointed two fingers at his eyes, then at him, indicating he was watching.

I would have preferred to ride a regular motorcycle rather than a big bike since I didn’t feel safe the last time I rode one, but since North said his tire was low on air, there was nothing to be done.

He got on the bike and handed me a helmet. I took it, put it on, and climbed on behind. Last time, getting on was quite hard, but looking at it now, if I held onto his shoulders, it would be easier.

“Sorry.” I said, asking for permission to touch him, then reached out to hold onto his shoulders to mount the bike successfully.

“Hold on tight, be careful not to fall, Phii Arthit drives like shit.” North warned. I nodded slightly to show I understood, and then the beautiful big bike took off rapidly.    …

    Arthit

My gaze was still fixed forward while driving my favorite big bike, different from usual only because someone was riding behind me, gripping my shirt tightly around my waist.

I’ve never let anyone ride on my big bike before, truly, because it’s annoying. When someone rides with you, it adds weight, making it feel unfamiliar, to put it simply, it’s not as agile.

At first, seeing him struggle to get onto the big bike was kind of funny, like a tiny creature trying to climb something, but him grabbing my shoulder while getting on and being close like this wasn’t too bad.

I thought I wasn’t driving that scary, I figured it was because he’d never been a passenger before, that’s why he was scared. If I were racing, that’s when it would be truly scary.

When we got to the restaurant, the short guy behind me held onto my shoulder and slowly got off the bike. I don’t know why, but I felt an itch, an urge. He couldn’t take off the helmet, so again, I had to reach out to help him. Can’t he even take off a helmet? And what’s with that exhausted look? How tiring could riding on my bike be?

    “Scared?”

“…” He didn’t answer, just nodded slightly, and seeing that, I felt like I wanted to grab and bite him right there!

    Wait a minute.

Wasn’t last night enough of your crazy behavior, Arthit? You see this short one and you always feel this itch to grab and punch him!

       Huh…or maybe you can…

Before I could do anything else, North, driving a black motorcycle, pulled up next to us, took off his helmet, put it on the bike’s mirror, and looked at us.

       “What’s up?”

“Just got here.” the short one answered. The three of us walked into the restaurant. Though I was still annoyed that North followed us, I let it go. “Looks cozy, sticking close like that.” North quickened his pace to walk beside me, covering his mouth with his hand and whispering, grinning in a way that made me want to smack him.

We walked over to the table. I sat across from the alien, and North sat next to him again. I remember when Hill used to go out with his wife, this asshole, North, would always be there like a leech. And he doesn’t even seem to realize how bothersome he is. Even though Hill might not mind you, I certainly find you annoying, you bastard.

    “Ha ha.”

“What’s so funny?” I turned to ask North.

“I don’t know, Phii, I just feel like something fun is about to happen, right,

    Phipungto?”

“Is that so?” the low-battery robot answered in his usual soft voice, unlike the bastard next to him, who’s all over the place like a Golden Retriever every day.

“Doesn’t your husband mind you coming out to eat like this?”

“Nah, I asked permission, I’ll buy some food to take back for him.”

    “Oh.”

“Phipungto, what did you want to eat?”

    “That’s right, North.”

We had ordered our food, and when I had some free time, I sat there with my chin resting on my hand, occasionally looking at the person across from me because there was nothing else to do.

Today felt as dull as any other day, but maybe I’m just tired, right? The fever seems to be gone, thank goodness it didn’t come back, otherwise, I’d be in trouble.    Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed something and turned to look, seeing North with furrowed brows, looking back and forth between me and that short guy with a puzzled expression.

“Why are you looking so confused?”

    “Just wondering.”

    “Wondering about what?”

“Seriously…” North made a troubled face, “Between you two, it’s all dead air, was it like this when you went abroad together?”    “Yeah.” I answered.

“What’s with this super awkward atmosphere?”

    “You get uncomfortable easily.”

“No, Phii. I’m normal. You two are the weird ones, gone mad.” the whiner let out a big sigh, “Phipungto the block.”

    “Huh?”

“Review the San Francisco trip with Phii Arthit then.”

“…There’s nothing to review.” He answered just as expected. I raised my eyebrows at North, not surprised, and then North took over the conversation, bringing up this and that, while the low-battery robot just responded, occasionally asking back. His fate isn’t much different from mine. If he weren’t so talkative, he’d have given up by now.

Yeah, but it’s different when he talks to me; he responds longer and even smiles at North. Even if it’s just a little smile.

       North…

       That little brat.

“Last time when you looked at my fortune, right? You said my life would reach a turning point, I think…” I heard North saying that, and after a while, the food was served, including takeout for Jo. Don’t tell me I have to pay for Jo too. No way.

“Yeah, and you, are you paying?”

    “I’m not paying for Jo.”

“Such a cheapskate. Can’t even pay for this.”

“Your husband’s pretty rich, why are you so stingy?”

“That’s not related, you should ask why if Phii Jo works hard, why should I be extravagant?”

“Wow, but your husband uses banknotes instead of scratch paper, you know?”    “That’s too much, Phii, but I’ve seen him make paper airplanes out of money when he was bored, with nothing to do.”

“Airplanes, huh, that’s nothing, man, that day we went to study, the table was too low, and that asshole Jo used a stack of money as a bookstand, I tell you, it was comfy reading.”

“Fuck.” North swore and burst out laughing, “So you haven’t seen him use it as a blanket yet, he asked me to sew it into a sheet one day, to use as a blanket. Took me two or three days, and it was a huge sheet.”

“Damn, that’s going overboard, you bastard.” I couldn’t help but laugh a little at our nonsense, this was just playful banter about Jo’s excessive wealth. By now, he’s probably sneezed and lost an eye.

We kept chatting casually, North turned to talk with the short one sometimes. I glanced at him occasionally until we finished eating and asked for the bill. I paid for everything. It wasn’t much, just treating them to a meal. As we walked out of the restaurant, North got close and whispered:

“What’s this, Phii? It’s not the atmosphere of someone flirting.”

    “Flirting, what?”

“Flirting, you know, aren’t you into him? This feels so awkward.”

“And then what? I don’t know.” I replied, looking at the blue-haired guy leading the way.

“Come on, I thought you’d be more experienced.”

“Your dad is experienced, man. It’s not like that.” I cursed, this bastard made me sound like a total idiot, “I’ve never done this kind of thing, get it?”

“Wow, that’s tough, and the person you’re trying to flirt with, sigh, hopeless, just give up.”

“Give up, fuck off.” I said quietly, “Are you going back?” I asked when we were near the parking lot, soon we’d have to part ways.

“I’ll go back, why? Oh.” North nodded in understanding, “I have to go back and give food to Phii Jo.”

“You talk like my friend is a dog.”

“Come to my room, so we can talk, plan things out first.” North narrowed his eyes with a smile that definitely had something hidden behind it.

“Inviting me to your room, huh? This is your chance to be a little husband.”    “Bah! You bastard, what are you going to do? If we don’t help you, you’ll be at your wit’s end, not knowing what to do.” the person next to me said irritably, “The only thing you know how to do is grab him and do something, and you haven’t even done anything yet, but you’ve already bitten your friend’s neck.”    “I want to argue, but, yeah, it’s true.” I sighed, admitting that the only thing I could think of was to grab him and beat the hell out of him until he was black and blue.

What can I do? I’ve never in my life thought about courting anyone. Just admitting I like someone is hard enough, let alone having to do something complicated like courting. Can’t I just skip all that trouble? Can’t it just be that I wake up and he’s my wife?

“Or we could just call. No, for something this big, we need to meet and talk, we have to have a meeting. Seriously, I’m still in shock, I need to prepare myself mentally first.”

“Yeah, do whatever, I’ll come to your room later, make sure to chain Jo up too, he’s so damn fierce, doesn’t like anyone coming into his room.”

“It’s fine, I’ve slept on your sofa before.”

    “Yeah, yeah.”

I responded to North before walking towards my car where the short guy was waiting. He was standing there quietly, waiting for me and North to finish our conversation, not knowing that we were talking about him the whole time.

    “Hey.”

    “What?”

I looked down at the guy who was shorter than me, and he looked up at me. He’s just this tall. If I pulled him into a hug now, his head would fit right under my chin.    Before I knew it, I had already extended one hand. I intended to pull him into a hug because I wanted to know what it would feel like, but instead, I ended up ruffling his hair. He didn’t look too pleased and seemed more surprised that I would do something like that, before moving to step away.

Seeing that displeased look, I couldn’t help but smile.

       “Hey.”

    “What?”

    “Nothing.”

    “…”

Before I put the helmet on him and then on myself, I got on the bike and waited for the other to climb on. Once he realized it was easier to get on by holding onto my shoulders, it was better that way.

I set off to drive back to my condo, and he held onto my shirt the whole way.

“If you hug, it would be safer.”

    “…”

He didn’t respond. I accelerated a bit more until he had to really hug my waist.

Yeah, this is better than just holding on, by a lot. Why didn’t he hug from the start?

I’ll take a longer route, might as well, there’s plenty of gas.

And I want you to hug me for longer too.

“Can you go slower?” I heard the person behind me say, not very clearly because of the wind.

    “No.”

    “…”

“But if you hug tighter, I might slow down.”

I said it with a smirk no one could see at that moment.

I felt the person behind me hug tighter, slowly easing off the throttle, satisfied. He must really be scared, I guess. He’s not scared of cars when they go fast but is scared of big bikes. Not surprising, the level of fear is quite different.    When I slowed down, he loosened his grip. So, I accelerated again, and he hugged me tight once more. If I said I like the way he hugs with a trembling body like this, would it be weird? It makes me want to comfort him somehow.

And then we arrived at the condo parking lot. He slowly got off the bike, looking a bit unwell but didn’t say anything, walking inside with me following behind.

If you ask why I followed him inside when I was supposed to leave:

I’m sending him home, if I say I’ll send you home, then I’ll do it properly and that means till he is safe and inside.

I noticed the person in front of me still trembling slightly. If it were anyone else, they would have been upset by now, but the shorty wasn’t. He didn’t even ask about the hug, probably still not caring, yeah. Well, good, truly great at ignoring, keep it up.

He opened the door to his room, not forgetting to turn back to thank me. I just raised my eyebrows to say ‘no problem’ before turning around to walk back to my motorcycle to go to Jo’s place as planned with his wife.

Apart from Fah’s room, there are only Jo’s and Hill’s rooms that serve as my emergency sleeping spots when the key card is lost. I think losing the key card has been a problem for a long time, but I don’t know what to do about it. A bit of drinking makes the problem go away, but changing the door system isn’t possible since I don’t own the room; I’m just renting. If the condo owner doesn’t allow it, there’s nothing I can do.

I often go to Fah’s room because he’s kind, perfect for being taken advantage of by someone like me. I can sleep on the sofa, eat free meals without washing dishes, water and electricity are free, the bathroom is clean, the air conditioning is cool, the room is tidy, and Fah’s wife is wonderful by even sending my clothes to be washed. I wake up with nicely ironed clothes ready for class.

Going to Hill’s or Jo’s rooms is much less frequent, except for those rare moments when I feel like being considerate to Fah. If it’s Hill, it takes all day to convince him to agree to me sleeping over. Hill hates every living thing on the planet except his wife and himself, cold and heartless towards me, but very nice to his wife. However, his wife is kind, cooking extra food and sending my laundry to be cleaned just like Fah’s wife. Yeah, Hill’s wife is also great.

Getting permission to stay in Jo’s room takes a considerable amount of time. When staying with him, there’s no happiness, he’s as fierce as a dog, always growling, and cursing at me all day. Being with Jo is really annoying, but the advantage is his room is spacious and luxurious. Plus, North likes to sing loudly. Even if he sings well, so what? I’m deaf to it, can’t complain because it’s not my room.

And one thing I think about, when I sleep over, there must not be zero sex getting on. They must be annoyed. Maybe they do, especially Jo, he definitely wouldn’t care if I’m sleeping outside. Luckily, I’ve never heard any sounds leaking out. I’m not some pervert wanting to hear that stuff.

I walked up to Johan’s door, rang the doorbell, and after a while, North came to open it. As I walked in, I saw what I expected; the room owner looked openly displeased at me.

“What the hell are you here for?”

“Calm down, Johan, didn’t North tell you?”

“He told me roughly.” Jo said, letting out an annoyed sigh, “I knew it would come to this, no way you could give up.”

    “I did my best, man.”

“Yeah, the person you’re serious about is interesting.”

“Really?” I furrowed my brows before taking off my black jacket that I wore while driving, “So what should I do then? Because if you don’t give me some guidelines, tonight I might end up breaking into the room and pinning him down on the bed.”

“You’re fucking savage.” Jo shook his head slightly.

“You wouldn’t do that, would you?”

“Shit no, at first, I couldn’t stand anything at all, you bastard.”

“Can’t you just not stand it?”

“Not here anymore, are you?” North put his water glass down on the table and sat next to Jo.

“When Jo was chasing after you, it wasn’t this unbearable.”

“I can bear it.” Jo said. North gave him a slight glare before letting out a sigh.    “Let me ask first, do you really like my friend?” I nodded in response, “And who knows about this?”

    “You guys and Fah.”

    “Hill doesn’t know yet?”

    “Not yet.”

“You won’t be able to hide it for long, Arthit, it’s better to tell him straight up.

Seriously, Hill’s got better senses than Fah, and you’re not good at lying either.”    “I’m a straightforward person, not good at lying.” I said, knowing well I lack the ability to lie because, honestly, I don’t want to lie about anything, I want to say everything directly. Or if some things shouldn’t be said, it’s better not to say them,

“Actually, North isn’t good at lying either.”    “Yeah, true.” Jo agreed.

“Honest fools, right?” He said, proudly raising his thumb, “But the real issue is how you’re going to pursue Phipungto. Because Phipungto listens to his friends, especially Ter and Phoon.”

    “Why?”

“I’m guessing. I think Phipungto likes people with good hearts. When he first opened up to us, his only group of friends, Ter was the one trying to get close. So, you should ask Ter.”

“Here we go again, we can’t avoid Hill.”

“Damn.” I cursed in frustration, running my hand through my hair, “Do I really have to do it? Can’t I just do it my way, be myself? He told me to be myself, didn’t he?”

“Phii, you don’t have to be yourself too much, you can be a little better than you are.”

    “Fuck.”

“But I think you shouldn’t do anything rash, it’ll just shut him off more.”

    “I know.”

“Old wounds, right? You’ll have to prove to him that you won’t hurt him like the last person did.”

“Oh, the ex…” I repeated North’s words and thought back to them. The ex means that bastard Khram whom I beat up and sent to the hospital, right? That asshole, look at what you did, I should have just killed you then and there.

From what I remember, he was quite an asshole too, especially when that short guy cursed him out like a dog at the café.

“I’m not his ex, why be scared?”

“The guy is marked in his memory, what can I do?”

“Sigh. Isn’t this impulsive? Maybe it’s too late, I’ve already bitten his neck.

Lucky that he thinks it’s a ghost; sometimes ghosts have their uses.”    “Bit his neck?” Jo raised his eyebrows, repeating my words.

“Yeah, bit hard enough to leave a mark, it’s still there.”

    “Well, that’s good then.”

“Phii Jo, how can that be good!”

“The first time, I did something similar. Even if it wasn’t a bite, it was similar.” Jo said with a calm face, unlike North who looked agitated and suspicious, “It’s not good, but I wanted to do it.”

“Yeah, it’s not good, but I wanted to do it.” I echoed Jo’s sentence, making North sigh again, seeming exhausted.

“Sigh, enough from both of you, Phipungto isn’t me, Phii.”

“I know, if it were you, I wouldn’t have done it.”

    “Try it then.”

“What kind of breed are you, damn fierce.”

“Phipungto is someone who doesn’t need anything anymore, has a career, can live alone, happy with everything. You have to ask why he would want you in his life.”

    “Hmm…yeah, that’s true, I’m not exactly useful.”

“Sigh, let’s end this, I’m going to sleep, you bastard.” Jo said, sounding bored as if he was about to get up from the sofa, but North held him back, “Tell us your good points then.”

“Good looking, rich dad, and big down there.”

“I’ve heard you brag about it several times, is it really big?” Jo squinted at me. I gave him a smile.

“You have to try it, Jo.”

“You can’t use that kind of approach with me, that won’t work.”

“You never know until you try, let’s see.”

“Sigh.” North sighed again in irritation, trying to steer the conversation back on track, but we were just being senseless, “Answer properly, damn it, I’m getting annoyed.”

“Don’t get so worked up, little brother. It’s…better to have me, for peace of mind.”

    “That’s it?”

“What more do you want?” I furrowed my brows, trying to think of an answer, “I can protect him. Take care of him when he’s sick…maybe, yes, I can be someone he can rely on.”

“Rely on how? You can’t even rely on yourself.”

“Take me as a burden then, in case life’s too good for him.”    “Fuck you.” North started to pinch his temples.

“I think I’m good-looking. Just my good looks should be enough, right?” I said with a firm tone, and I meant it, “Right, Johan?”

“You do have that going for you.”

    “See, even Jo agrees.”

“I said take care of him, okay.” North ignored everything we were discussing and focused seriously on that matter, “Can protect, yeah, that’s true.”

    “Uh-huh.”

“You won’t cheat on him, right?”

    “No.”

“How can you be sure? You’ve never dated before, have you?”

“If it would hurt him, then I won’t do it.” I said honestly, which made both listeners look a bit stunned, “What, why the surprise?”

“Not at all, Phii, that’s good, you seem very serious. I approve. I’m on your team.”

“You have to be on my team, North.”

“Oh.” North clicked his tongue in annoyance, “Phipungto doesn’t have a problem with rough talk, so that’s easy for you. I think you just shouldn’t do anything too aggressive. But does he know you like him?”

“I don’t know, I didn’t hide anything, I just asked him to hug me while driving.” I said straightforwardly. When I told him to hug me, I didn’t think much of it, I just wanted a hug. After that, I wouldn’t care what happened.

    “You drove fast, huh?”

“Yeah, it was worth it, I swear. I’m still in a good mood now.”

    “Great.”

    “You’ve done it too, right?”

“Never missed out.” I gave a thumbs up to Johan, my dear friend who almost always agrees with me, “If he hugged you, does that mean he’s interested?”

“Yeah, I think he likes me too.”

“…Wait.” North interjected softly, sounding exasperated, don’t let self-absorbed people stay together, “You forced him…”

“North, are you my code junior? I’ll just ask this, are you my junior? In the three years we’ve known each other, what have you given me?” You can’t make me miss Phipungto.”

“Sigh, yeah, yeah! He likes you, oh, who wouldn’t like someone as handsome and rich as you, are you some kind of reincarnated god or what, my bro. Who can compete with my senior, they’re all just low-lives, spit. Whoever gets you is damn lucky, man.”

“You speak well, North, you deserve to be my junior.”

“Go for it, Arthit, don’t overthink it.” Jo waved his hand dismissively, “In the end, if you can’t have his heart, just have sex with him.”

“Yeah, yeah, just have sex with him. Even if you don’t have his heart, having his body is still good, better than nothing.”

“Hold on, that’s your friend, North, didn’t you say to take it slow at first?”

“Not slow anymore! Go for it, Phii Arthit. If the wall is too thick, break it down!”

“Calm down first.” I had to be the one to calm things down because my friend’s wife seemed like he could breathe fire, “Okay, then. Just don’t do anything impulsive, right? Geez, we didn’t even need to talk about this.”

“We should talk. I care about my friend, everything should go through me first.”    “Then it’s all good, I’m heading back.” I said, standing up and slinging my jacket over my shoulder.

“You’re in such a hurry, Phii, play a game with me before you go.”

“Let’s do it next time, I need to rush back to my future wife, he must be crying because he misses me by now.”

       WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 19: Never Regretted

       Arthit

I opened my eyes with difficulty, still feeling the effects of alcohol in my head. The last memory was of Jo unceremoniously throwing me onto the floor. I scanned the room, realizing it wasn’t very familiar. The air was cold, almost to the point of being chilly. Hearing some movement, I turned to see the short guy sleeping on a bed not far from me.

Oh, because I lost my key card again, so I was dumped here in the short guy’s room, huh?

Sigh. With only me, him, and the drunk one on this floor, and the drunk one not being around, there’s nothing to be done.

The dim surroundings told me it was still night. I managed to get up from the floor to use the bathroom and take care of my business. When I came out, I found the room was indeed very cold. Was this short guy a heat lover or something? Why was the AC set so low? If a room is going to be this cold, at least there should be some blankets. Not leaving me to sleep stiff on the floor.

I wanted to continue sleeping on the sofa, but it was too damn cold, and there were no blankets, and the bed was wide enough. Why couldn’t I sleep there with him?

I walked over and sat on the empty side of the bed, trying not to wake the room’s owner because if I did, I’d probably be sent back to the floor or the sofa. But even if I were told to move, I wouldn’t. I glanced at the person on the bed, sleeping all curled up. Were you cold too? Why didn’t you adjust the AC?

I lay down on the bed, trying to grab some of the blanket, but it was hard because the short guy was holding it tight. It took a while to wrestle some for myself, oddly enough, he didn’t wake up despite the struggle. But whatever. I took the liberty of both sleeping on the bed and taking some of the blanket. If he wakes up, he’ll probably just grumble and give me a displeased look. He’s not one to make a fuss.    This might be the first time I’ve shared a bed with someone else. As far as I can remember, I’ve never shared a bed with Direk or my mother. If I’ve ever shared a bed, it was only for one thing, and then we’d go our separate ways. Never stayed overnight. You’re the first for many things.

    First love too.

Damn…I really do ramble when I’m drunk.

Even though my head was still throbbing, I didn’t feel like sleeping. I don’t know why, but watching you sleep wasn’t too bad.

It’s a pity he was facing the other way, but the distance wasn’t much at all.

Not so much that my hand couldn’t reach.

After a while, I noticed the person next to me breathing too heavily, quick and labored, which was suspicious. I reached out to feel, finding he was burning up. This must be why he was clutching the blanket so tight; he’s sick. Here I was, taking the blanket from someone who’s ill.

I got up to adjust the AC to make the room temperature more comfortable, turned on the light, and looked for some fever reducer but couldn’t find a single pill. I wondered why someone who knows they’re often sick doesn’t keep medicine in their room, especially since I heard he gets sick a lot.

Looking at the person lying on the bed, panting, face red all the way to the ears, looking tormented, hugging themselves tightly, that condition made me feel quite uncomfortable.

Maybe he’s sick because he just came back from abroad. Whatever the reason, the problem is what to do about it.

Should I take him to the hospital? No, my car is at the bar, there’s another car but the keys are in the room, and I’ve lost my room key. Now, I only have the keys to the car at the bar.

Maybe we don’t need to go to the hospital; it looks like just a regular fever. Resting should make him feel better. I went to get a cloth soaked in water. I intended to wipe him down. Since he’s unconscious from the fever, might as well take advantage and tease him a bit.

Just kidding. I’m just wiping him down; someone sick needs to be cleaned, right?

I pulled the blanket off, placed the cloth on his neck, and wiped as gently as possible, all while wondering why I had to do this. After wiping his neck, I moved to other areas, lifting his T-shirt to wipe his abdomen.

       …That short guy.

       So damn white.

       I won’t wipe him anymore!!

Why is he so white? No, the whiteness isn’t surprising, but why do I find his stomach and waist so damn appealing? Shit, he’s incredibly sexy, his waist is just the right size for my hand, seeing it makes me want to stroke and grip it hard, damn.

I quickly covered his shirt to stop my thoughts from going further, placed the cloth on his forehead, turned off the light, and lay back down on the bed, facing away from him, trying to calm my emotions.

Believe me, no one has ever made me this flustered before, just this ordinarylooking short guy. Or maybe it’s because I like him that it’s like this.

While I was silently anxious, I felt something touch my back. I turned to see it was the person next to me, moving closer, and his hand touched me.

       Damn.

       Too close!!

As I turned this way, we got even closer, his eyes half-closed in sleep, the towel I had placed earlier had fallen, the dim light made his flushed face visible at close range, his warm breath coming out rhythmically, curled up and trembling, probably because he felt cold.

       Oh man, I’m going crazy!

You’re cold, aren’t you? Very cold, right?

Got it! Tonight, I’ll hug you myself!!

I reached out to pull him into a hug, extending my other arm for him to lean on and gently stroking his head with that hand, while my other arm tightened around his waist.

He’s as small as Cat’s kid, like if I hugged him a bit tighter, he might shatter. But on the contrary, I wanted to hold him even tighter.

The heat from his body made me feel warm too, but I was sure I wouldn’t catch a cold. After a while, the person in my arms stopped shivering, probably feeling warmer now. But I was the one not feeling okay anymore; how could anyone sleep in this situation, damn it?

I sighed, hoping to calm myself down. I had to remind myself he was sick, Arthit. Besides, you were going to get over him, weren’t you? Yeah, right. Normally, I wouldn’t hug you, but because you’re sick, I’ll let it slide.

A faint, sweet scent wafted towards my nose, similar to the one on the plane, but it probably wasn’t just shampoo this time, it was more his natural scent.    And damn, it was so fragrant, why? I’ve never smelled something so nice from anyone unless they were wearing extra perfume, but this short one, without using any perfume, why does he smell so good? It’s a soft scent that feels oddly comforting, making me think that if I could smell this every night, I’d sleep well.    I couldn’t resist pressing my nose into the nape of his neck after catching that scent, finding it even sweeter there. It made me want to eat him up, why does he smell like this? I can’t take it anymore!

       I bit him!

Unable to hold back, I left a mark with my teeth between his neck and shoulder.

When I bit into that soft skin, it made me want more…

But I stopped myself right there, quickly pulling away.

I bit him because I felt itchy, yeah. He really does make me feel itchy, that’s for sure. Who could stand someone this close who you like?

I gently touched the mark I left, noticing it was starting to turn a reddish-purple on his pale, smooth skin; it didn’t look too bad. Realizing it was my mark, I felt a bit of satisfaction.

I adjusted his shirt collar back to normal, and before long, I drifted off to sleep without realizing it, and this night was one where I slept very well.    I woke up when sunlight streamed through the window, surprised to feel something heavy on my arm. Looking down, I saw someone sleeping soundly in my embrace.

Last night, because he was sick, I held him while we slept, and he seemed less feverish, indicating his condition had improved slightly. I slowly pulled my arm out and sat up.

So, this is what it feels like to sleep hugging someone.

    Good…

    Maybe it’s good too.

I sighed unconsciously, thinking I shouldn’t be doing this. I was supposed to give up, wasn’t I? Well, at least there’s something good about it. Getting to hug you for a whole night is quite worth it, but it would be even better if we could do this more often. Yeah, it would be great if we could do this every day, really great.    When he moved slightly, his shirt collar opened, revealing the marks I left last night, making me feel a bit strange. In the morning, it was even more apparent how red they were against his skin. Shit, did I take advantage of someone who wasn’t in their right mind? But even so, I don’t feel guilty. Whatever, it’s not like it hurts that much. The marks will fade in a few days.

I left the room and went down to the management office, where I got a slightly disapproving look before receiving another key card. Back in my room, I remembered I had an early class and rushed out.

Back to the same old boring routine, now that things with Mom are better, the thought of dropping out is stronger than ever, but I’m still half-hearted about it because I’ve studied this much and don’t want to start over. Or maybe not going to university would be better, just stick with Direk or find something else to do.

“How are you, hungover?” Jo asked while we were taking a break.    “No, it’s strange actually.” I said, noting it was strange that I didn’t have a hangover despite drinking so much last night.

“And how was it, sleeping in that room?”

“Shit.” I said, lightly scratching my head. Now it was just me and Jo since Hill and Fah were in another ward, “Jo, let me ask you something.”

    “What now?”

“Have you ever thought that one person could smell really good?”

    “I have.”

“Your wife, huh? I shouldn’t have asked.” I sighed a little, “Why does he smell so good when he’s just another human?”

“Because you like him, so you like his smell.” Jo answered, sounding bored, “You haven’t really given up, have you?” He raised his eyebrows, seemingly mocking me. I made a face at him.

    “I really mean it.”

“People who really mean it don’t sleep hugging someone they claim they’ve given up on.” His words made me pause immediately.

    “Shit, how did you know?”

“I just guessed.” Jo said, looking surprised, “Are you serious?”

“…Yeah.” I answered shortly, the person next to me immediately burst into laughter, “He was sick, seemed cold, so I hugged him.”

    “Oh, that’s how it is.”

“Johan, you bastard.” I couldn’t help but curse, giving him a look of utter disgust.

    “Hill.”

    “What?”

“Hill once told me not to approach anyone with half-hearted feelings, like or dislike, make it clear. Your actions and words should match, really, Arthit, you should know this.”

Jo’s words made me inadvertently scratch my head again, letting out a big sigh.

    “Yeah.”

“Have you told Fah yet, about deciding to get over him?”

“No.” I shook my head, “I haven’t had the time to tell him.”

“Are you still going to tell him?”

“Damn, I’ll really get over him.”

“Doesn’t seem like you want to do that, apart from hugging, what else did you do?”

    “Guess.”

    “Did you guys do it?”

    “Spit. Fuck no.”

“I thought it was your lecherous ways. There shouldn’t be anything left.”

“It’s already bad enough, what do you take me for? I just bit him.”

    “For what?”

“I don’t know, my teeth felt itchy.”

“Is this what people do when they say they’re going to get over someone? I just learned that this is how it’s done.”

“See, you always contradict me.” I grumbled in annoyance.

“You’re just full of contradictions.” Jo said, looking equally annoyed.

“This kind of thing takes time, you know.” I argued back.

“Yeah, yeah, it’s your problem, you’ve got your whole life, no need to rush.”

“It won’t take my whole life…probably.”

    Daotok

I’ve been looking at myself in the mirror for nearly five minutes now, but I still can’t explain the bite mark on my shoulder, where it came from or how it got there. I woke up around noon, guessing I must have been sick last night because I’m still feeling hot and have a slight headache.

Last night, I remember I was asleep and heard a knock on the door. It was North and his boyfriend, bringing the guy from the next room because he lost his key card, so they asked for help. I let him sleep on the floor, and then I fell back to sleep easily, not paying him any more attention.

I vaguely remember that before going to sleep, the guy from the next room said something about doctors, but because I was sleepy and probably had a fever, I couldn’t remember the details clearly, but whatever, and when I woke up, no one was in the room anymore.

Last night’s dream was a bit strange; I dreamed I was in a dark place, and it was very cold. I ran through the darkness for a long time before finding a white light.

When that white light enveloped me, I immediately felt warm.

After showering and getting dressed, I walked out to find a towel lying by the bed. I remembered I didn’t leave a towel there. When I picked it up, it was slightly damp. If I had to guess, it must have been the guy from next door who put it on my forehead last night.

I threw the towel into the laundry basket and prepared to go to class. Even though my head still hurts a little, whatever. As I was slinging my backpack over my shoulder, the strap brushed against the bite mark, causing a sharp pain.

What the hell is this? It looks like a human bite mark.

    I frowned, not too pleased.

“If you hurt me like last night again, I won’t let it slide.” I said to whoever was in the room. If it wasn’t Phii Donat, who left a long time ago, then it must be someone else in here. We’ve been living together peacefully for so long, why suddenly want to hurt me now? Damn, it hurts so much I can’t even put on my backpack. Don’t let me find out who did this.

While leaving the room, something came to mind, and I immediately called my grandmother.

    (What’s up, my grandson?)

“Grandma Puangthong, I was attacked by a ghost.”

(What! A ghost in the room? Who did it, what did it do to you!) Mrs.

Puangthong’s voice changed instantly; you could hear she was very panicked.

“I don’t know who did it either, but I was bitten on the neck, it hurts a lot, it’s a tooth mark.”

(That’s scary, did you do something to provoke it?)

“No, sir. I haven’t even been in my room for several days, we’ve been getting along fine all this time.”

    (Then why, huh?)

“Oh, right, last night, it seemed like I was led by something. While sleeping.”

(Could it be he’s angry because you didn’t do any merit-making for him? Okay then, I’ll go do some merit-making, let’s say it’s for the ghost in the room who bit your neck. I’m just about to head to the temple anyway.)

       “Then please do, thank you.”

(Hmm, if anything else, let me know, and take care of yourself.)

       “Yes.”

I hung up the phone. I’m not sure if my grandmother going to do merit-making and specifying it’s for the person who bit my neck will have any effect, but if Khun Phuengthong says she’ll do it, you can’t stop her.

I stopped by the elevator, and didn’t wait long before it arrived, along with the guy from the room next door who was also getting on. He looked a bit surprised to see me standing there.

“Oh, it’s you, are you going to class?”

       “Yeah.”

“Have you recovered from being sick?”

“Yeah, thanks.” I looked up at him and spoke quietly. He raised his eyebrows in surprise, so I explained further, “About the wet cloth.”

“…Oh, yeah, I just put it on your forehead.”

    “Yeah.”

“And now, how are you getting there, by motorcycle?”

    “Yeah.”

“Oh.” He only responded with that. So I stepped into the elevator, pressed the ground floor button, and closed it. But just as the elevator door was closing, it opened again, indicating someone outside had pressed the open button. I looked at him confused, “Should I take you? Since you’ve just recovered from a fever, you might not be able to drive.”

    “It’s fine.”

    “I’ll take you.”

    “…”

Since he said that and walked into the elevator, I didn’t say anything more. There was silence in the elevator. When I remembered something, I spoke up.

“Was there anything strange last night?”

    “Huh, what was strange?”

“There’s a bite mark on my neck.”

    “…”

    “…”

“I’m wondering who did it.” I said, turning to look at the person standing next to me. He furrowed his brows and made a strange face. What does that expression mean? “There were three people. I don’t know who or why.”

    “Meaning?”

“Ghosts in the room, three not counting Phii Donat who moved out, but the one in the bathroom couldn’t come out, so probably two.”

    “Definitely one of those two.”

“Yeah. Didn’t you hear or see anything?”

“Not sure, let me think about it for a bit.”

    “Okay.”

And then the elevator reached the first floor. He walked out as usual, heading towards the motorcycle parking area. At first, I thought it would be a car. He got on a large black big bike and handed me a helmet to put on before I awkwardly got on behind him. I’ve never ridden or been a passenger on a big bike because I thought they were too big; experiencing it for the first time like this felt quite unaccustomed.

Suddenly, the bike took off. I was so startled that I instinctively grabbed his shirt. He was still a scary driver whether it was a car or a motorcycle, and the big bike didn’t make me feel safe at all. Especially with the guy from the next room driving, it made me feel like I could fall off at any moment. In my shock, I gripped his shirt even tighter.

“Where is your faculty?” He shouted over the strong wind.

    “Faculty of Science.”

“What?” Probably because of the wind, he didn’t hear what I said. So I shouted louder.

    “Science Faculty.”

“You need to speak louder. Or come closer to my ear.”

Hearing that, I moved closer until I was against his back, stretching up to speak close to him.

“Studying at the Faculty of Science.”

“Okay.” He answered like that before driving off. Since I didn’t dare to move back, I had to stay close to him as before, until we stopped in front of the Faculty of Science. I got off the motorcycle with about as much difficulty as when I got on.

“Are you scared too? I saw you weren’t scared when driving a car.”

“A little. I’ve never been a passenger before.”

    “Really?”

    “Yeah.”

“Never been on a big bike or on someone else’s motorcycle?”

    “Big bike.”

“Oh.” He nodded slightly, then saw that I couldn’t take off my helmet, so he reached out to help me. It didn’t take long before he managed to take it off and handed it to me.

    “Thanks.”

    “What time do you finish?”

    “Huh?”

    “Then wait around here.”

“Are you coming to pick me up?”

“Yeah, damn it, I brought you here. How would you get back if I didn’t come to get you?”

    “I could walk.”

“Is that supposed to be funny? Just wait here.”

“Okay, thanks for bringing me.” I said in my usual flat tone. He seemed slightly annoyed hearing that.

    “Say it with some enthusiasm.”

    “I am enthusiastic.”

“Thank you, and say who you’re thanking.”

“…Thank you for bringing me, Phii Arthit.”

I thanked him and said my name as he instructed, without thinking much about it, but the one who told me to speak went silent, looking utterly shocked.

“Oh…uh! No problem! I’m leaving!” He shouted loudly and sped off on his big bike. I don’t understand why he had to look so displeased when he was the one who told me to speak in the first place. Why be angry?

I turned around to walk towards my faculty, only then noticing that quite a few people were looking at me. I was pretty sure they were looking because of both the person and the bike that just dropped me off. The guy from the next room is quite famous around the university, and his bike is very noticeable too.

I didn’t pay attention to those stares and went straight to my classroom.

    Arthit

I came back to my room and just lay there doing nothing since there was nothing left to do at the faculty in the afternoon. I’m not sure why, but when the professor said there was no class, I rushed back to my room. In the elevator, I ran into that short guy who was just heading to class, and if I may say, I had just recovered from a fever, but here he was, going to class, for heaven’s sake.

He asked about the mark on his neck. It’s a blessing he suspects the ghosts in the room, so I could smoothly blame them. Otherwise, I would be in big trouble. First, I’d be asked why I did it, damn. No, he probably wouldn’t be that rude, but he’d probably look at me with a poker face, hiding his displeasure, asking why I did it, and then he probably wouldn’t want to talk to me much after that.

I was worried he might faint on the way, so I acted like a good person and offered to drive him to his faculty. He gripped my shirt so hard it left marks, probably out of fear. Of course, motorcycles, especially when driven recklessly, are scarier than cars.

When I dropped him off at his faculty and asked him to say something, damn, I nearly died when he spoke. I mean, I’d never heard anything like that from him before. Even if he said it with a straight face, still, shit, I was speechless! After that, I drove back to my room in a daze, feeling like something had slipped away from me. Even now, I can’t get his face and voice out of my head.

Sigh, you’re going too far, you short guy!

I hadn’t been lying down for long when I heard a knock on the door. Opening it, I found Meen in the same messy state as the last time I saw her.

“Arthit, let’s go for a drink.”

“In the afternoon? Stop it, I told you I’m cutting down.”

    “Cut down tomorrow then.”

“You said that yesterday too. I won’t ask again, but what’s wrong with you?”

“Arthit, drink with me, and I’ll tell you, okay, okay, okay?”

“Sigh. I’m done, I’ll take a break from drinking.” I said with a sigh. Normally, someone like me wouldn’t refuse alcohol, but recently, it’s been too much, I need to give my liver a rest, “You come to my room to drink beer, and tell me what happened.”

“Are you inviting me into your room? What are you thinking about me?”

“Drink or not. If not, go to the bar alone.”

“No, drinking alone isn’t fun. Okay, okay. No one else is going with me anyway.” Meen said with a hint of self-pity before walking into my room. She sat down on the sofa while I went to grab a can of beer from the fridge for her. She opened it and took a big gulp immediately, “You…want to hear, right?”

“Yeah, I want to know what got you into this state.”

“Donat, he broke up with me.”

“Huh?” I immediately furrowed my brows in confusion, “You got dumped by a ghost? Why?”

“Huh…huh.” She started to hiccup and grabbed some tissues from the table to wipe her tears, looking utterly pathetic, far from the strong Meen I knew, “Here’s the thing, we were living together normally, like husband and wife, even if he is a ghost. But lately, I’ve been approached by other ghosts more and more often, huh.”

    “…”

“Donat tried to help, but it just got worse. I went to see a monk, and he said it’s because I interact too much with spirits, making it easier for them to reach me. And some of these spirits are not good, they even started to harm me.”

“Wow, that’s messed up, fuck, you said you interact with spirits, right? The short guy next door almost got hurt too.” I mentioned, thinking of a similar case where the short guy almost died in the San Francisco cemetery.

    “From spirits?”

    “Yeah.”

“It’s dangerous, and I’m not that strong mentally either. The only solution is to stop interacting with spirits altogether.”

“So, Donat broke up with you?”

“Yes, I told him it was okay, there must be another way, but in the end, Donat broke up with me. He said if we break up, I wouldn’t have to worry anymore. I said I didn’t want to break up, but he wouldn’t listen, he told me to go through an exorcism ritual so this wouldn’t happen again, and then he would disappear too. He said I could date someone else, not to worry about him, damn, I don’t know what

to think, huh, and…after that, I haven’t seen him again, you, Arthit, I, huh, I can’t see him anymore, I call out but there’s no reply, you, huhuhu.”

Meen burst into tears like I’d never seen before. I could only listen because I’m not good at comforting people, gently patting her shoulder. She was crying so hard her shoulders were shaking, pitiful as hell, but Donat wasn’t really to blame; it was just an unavoidable situation.

“Motherfucker, I knew it, Arthit, do you understand? When he died, I never could accept it, but when I found out  he was still alive, who knows how happy I was, but in the end, dead is dead, you know, what can you do with someone who’s already dead?”

“Uh,” I only replied that before letting out a sigh. It’s true, as he said, dead is dead, what more can you expect? I understood this when I finally accepted the matter with my mother, “That bastard must have wanted you to be happy, don’t cry, he’d probably want you to smile more.”

“…” She didn’t reply. Just looked up at me, puzzled, “You talk like this too, huh, fuck, Arthit. You’re not my friend anymore, who are you being so gentle like lactase?”

“Yeah, I’m friendly with hidden spots, fuck, I remembered him again, it’s just normal words that helped me, I want them to help you too,” I said, the person in front of me nodded slightly and forced a smile.

“Yeah, you’re right, I’ll definitely smile, I’ll be happy for him, but give me some time.”

    “I understand, everything takes time.”

“You seem a bit different since you came back from abroad, or am I imagining

    it?”

“You’re imagining it,” I said, before getting up to fetch some water for him.

Meen cried for a while longer before she stopped.

    “Stop already.”

“I’m tired of crying now, thanks for listening to me, man.”

    “Yeah. No problem.”

“You seem different, not you,” he frowned. I immediately gave him a bored look,

“Not  the usual Arthit. Who the hell are you, spit my friend out.”

“I am Arthit, fuck, what do you want?”

“Maybe I’m imagining it, the vibe around you…it’s better, from being so repulsive it makes you want to puke just being near, now it’s better.”

“Fuck off,” I cursed at what she said, hearing that she let out a small chuckle,

“Hey Meen, can I ask something, are you okay?”

    “I guess so, what?”

“Now that Donat is gone, you’re sad, right?”

“Fucking obviously, didn’t you see me crying earlier?”

“Have you ever thought that if it would end like this, maybe it’s better not to be together from the start?” I asked about what I was afraid of right now, he should be the best one to answer this.

“No.” She answered without hesitation, making me wonder about his confidence, “Even if I knew he was going to die, if I could go back in time, I’d still choose to be with him.”

“Why? If there was nothing from the start, it wouldn’t hurt as much as having something and then losing it, right?”

“I don’t know about that, but I know that without him, I wouldn’t have been able to get through each day. Over the years, I’ve never regretted a single day of being with him. I’m even grateful to myself for choosing this path. I wanted to be with him even if one day it would break me apart, like now when I’m crying, I’ve never thought, ‘I wish I hadn’t chosen him.’“

    “…”

The answer and the determined look in her eyes left me speechless.    “From now on, without him, the memories we’ve had will make me happy forever.”

    “…”

“Why are you asking this? It’s a strange question.”

    “Meen.”

    “What, looking so serious?”

“One of my friends feels like they like someone, you know. This friend has never liked anyone before, but this person is different. My friend likes them and wants to be with them forever, but they’re scared that if that person disappears one day, they won’t be able to handle it.”

“…Oh.” Meen nodded slightly, “Your friend?”

    “Yeah, it’s my friend.”

“It’s not strange to be scared. Ask your friend how much they like this person. Do they want to have them in their life every day? If so, do they like them so much that they’d endure the pain of heartbreak again?”    Her question left me stunned once more.

“If they disappeared right now, would it be okay? Try to imagine tomorrow without them, would it be better like that?”

I stayed silent for a while until Meen broke the silence.

“I’m going now, I’ll take a nap first, I haven’t fully recovered from yesterday’s hangover.” She said, standing up from the sofa, “Think about it carefully. Or rather, tell your friend to think about it carefully.” She didn’t forget to turn and give a sarcastic smile. I gave a slight smile back before she walked out of the room.

I leaned back on the sofa, closing my eyes as my mind was in turmoil. Whether it was last night’s events, the touch, the warmth of the body, that scent, everything was still vivid, the face and the voice. Even now, I couldn’t stop thinking about what that short guy was doing, how his classes were going, who he was sitting with, whether the classroom was cold, if his fever would return, planning to leave at 4:40 to pick him up right after class. In reality, it would take me less than ten minutes to drive to his faculty, but it’s better to leave some extra time.

Give me time…hah, for someone like me who never liked waiting for others. I’ve never even picked someone up or dropped them off, damn it!

And after that, his words and questions kept echoing in my head. I heard that question over and over, but I had no answer.

“If there’s no tomorrow with him…would it be better?”    No way.

“If he disappeared now, would it be okay?”    Screw that, how could it be okay?

And me…what would I do if you disappeared?

What should I do…if there’s no more you?

Go back to how things were before I met you? How could that be possible, damn it.

No. No, man. I can’t do without you anymore…

“Sigh.” I let out a big sigh, hoping it would ease the heavy feeling in my heart right now. I desperately wanted to smoke, but I remembered I ran out yesterday, and I’m not in the mood to go buy more now. Oh man, what’s wrong with you, Arthit? You’ve been so unlike yourself these past few days…

But I still want every day to be like this.

I want to drive you, sleep while holding you, look after you when you’re sick, eat with you, look at your face again, listen to your music, read novels together, teach you to play the drums again.

If asked if I like you so much that I’d endure another heartbreak…

If you disappear again, if that moment comes, I still can’t imagine how much I could bear.

But if there’s no you tomorrow…that’s when I really wouldn’t be able to handle it.

No matter what, I probably won’t fall in love again in my life. Since that’s the case, even if you’re not by my side, you’d still be in my heart, so it’s better to have you with me because…

From now on, my whole life will have had you in it.

No matter what happens, I would never regret choosing this.

WESTTHESUNFROMANOTHERSTAR, Chapter 18: Crossing The Line

       Daotok

Through the clear glass balcony door, I saw the homeowner talking on the phone with a troubled expression, pacing back and forth on the balcony. His demeanor suggested he was busy, making me hesitant to interrupt. From where I stood, I couldn’t hear what was being said, but it seemed like he was arguing with someone on the other end of the line.

I was here because I was starting to get hungry. I intended to ask him when we would go out to eat since the bread in the kitchen was gone. If I don’t eat on time, I get stomach aches.

His attitude made me hesitate to open the door, but just standing here would look worse, like I was intentionally eavesdropping on someone’s phone conversation.

Even though I couldn’t hear anything.

I decided to open the door and step out, looking up at the person who was holding the phone to his ear, clearly not in a good mood as he was arguing with the person on the line. They must really be fighting, huh?

“No, Fah, you’re wrong.” The person in front of me ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

“Hey.” I called out, but it seemed he didn’t hear me.

“I told you it’s not like that! What the hell, who would…!!”

It seemed like he glanced at me out of the corner of his eye first, stopping midsentence and turning sharply to look at me with an annoyed expression, then his face changed to one of surprise when he saw me standing there.

    “When did you get here?!”

    “Just now.”

“Just now?! Were you eavesdropping on my call?”

“No. I just wanted to ask when we would go out to eat.” I said, and he furrowed his brows even more, looking displeased, before putting the phone back to his ear.

“We’ll talk later.” He said before hanging up and turning back to look at me.

    “What did you hear?”

    “I didn’t hear anything.”

    “Seriously.”

    “Uh-huh.”

“Huh, damn it.” He sighed heavily and ran his hand through his hair again,

    “What’s up?”

    “Let’s eat.”

“Yeah, you go wait downstairs first.” He said before hanging up. So I turned around and walked out from the balcony to the couch downstairs as he directed.    I waited downstairs for almost ten minutes before he came down. He didn’t seem in a better mood. I followed him to the car, and the atmosphere inside was silent, not even music like usual, but I didn’t feel uncomfortable. Even though the person next to me was radiating a tense vibe.

It seemed like he had argued with someone on the phone; I thought it might have been Cat’s boyfriend because I heard the name. If they really fought, I hope it doesn’t make Cat worry too.

But what time is it in Thailand now? Isn’t it pretty late? Mr. Jeon might be with Cat, they could be fast asleep by now.

The car stopped at a restaurant. I followed him inside before we ordered our food. Since we were sitting at the very edge by the glass door, I found myself gazing outside until I felt like someone was staring, and that someone was none other than the person sitting across from me.

“What?” I asked because he was sitting with his chin on his hand, frowning, and giving me a scary look, staring unblinkingly. What did that look mean? Was he trying to catch me out or was he unhappy with me?

    “Hey.”

    “…”

    “Hey.”

    “What?”

    “Why?”

    “What?”

He didn’t answer and sighed again, his expression turning to one of boredom, looking away for a moment but his eyes came back to me.

    What’s his deal…

    Sigh, whatever.

I took out my phone, plugged in my earbuds, and ignored him, watching drum videos with interest. Soon, the food was served, so I took off my earbuds.

Come to think of it…today is Tuesday, isn’t it?

I ate all the vegetables on my plate before leaving the expensive meat, because I forgot that today is Tuesday. Every Tuesday, I eat vegetarian because I made a vow when my grandmother was about to have surgery; since her birthday is on a Tuesday, I vowed that if her surgery went well, I would eat vegetarian every Tuesday.

“I won’t eat meat.”    I shook my head.

“Eat it, make it worth it for the one paying, like me.”

    “Want to?”

    “…”

    “Huh?”

“The meat.” I said, glancing at the vegetables still covering his plate, “I can trade for the vegetables.”

“What’s with you, trading meat for vegetables?”

    “I’m eating vegetarian today.”

    “Today? Why today?”

“I eat vegetarian every Tuesday, do you want to trade?”

“Okay, sure.” He said before scooping vegetables onto my plate and taking the meat. “Is the vegetable good?”

    “It’s fine.”

“I don’t like it at all.”

    “You don’t eat vegetables?”

“I can eat them, but if I have a choice, I won’t. I’m a hunter by nature.” He said, raising one eyebrow, probably feeling a bit better if he could joke like this again.

    “You’re good, aren’t you?”

    “What?”

    “You like eating vegetables.”

    “…”

“I’ll appoint you as my official vegetable eater then.”

    “Forget it.”

    “I didn’t ask.”

“…” I stayed silent without responding, whatever his problem was, I didn’t care. I finished all the vegetables on my plate since it was the only thing I could eat a lot of without feeling too full, and it tasted good too. When I looked up from my plate, I found the person in front of me still staring, but not in a way that seemed like he was trying to catch me out or showing annoyance anymore, “Are you unhappy about something?”

    “…”

My question made him let out a small laugh.

    “That’s quite the thug-like question.”

“No. Just asking straightforwardly, since you’re staring.”

“I was just looking.” He said, slightly raising his eyebrows in a nonchalant manner, “You’re sitting across from me, what else am I supposed to look at?”

    “…”

“You’re quite the sight for sore eyes.”

After saying that, he looked surprised at his own words.

“What do you mean by that?” I asked what I should have. The person across from me didn’t respond, just sat there frowning as if deep in thought, not paying attention to what I had said. Silence enveloped us for nearly five minutes.    “Indeed.”

    “…”

“I don’t know either.” He answered with a bored expression, as if he couldn’t be bothered to think about it anymore.

“Oh, uh-huh.” I nodded at the answer I received. It seemed even he didn’t understand what he meant or why he said it. If that’s the case, let it go. He called the server over to pay for the meal before we walked back to the same car.    I stood smoking on the same balcony, letting the little guy continue drumming alone in the practice room. The small incident that happened in the restaurant kept replaying in my head.

Quite the sight for sore eyes.

       Why…

I mean, why did I even say something like that? And I don’t really understand its meaning either, like, is it something that’s easy on the eyes or something like that?

       Yeah, that’s it, that word.

       Easy on the eyes.

Like when you look at the sky, trees, the sea, things like that, it’s nature that’s pleasing to the eyes. There’s nothing about it that feels jarring at all; it’s someone who gives off the feeling of looking at a calm sea all the time.

When something is easy on the eyes, people tend to want to look at it, right?    So, it wouldn’t be strange if I spent an hour staring at that short guy in the restaurant.

That’s right. It’s not strange at all, why would it be strange? That short guy didn’t even complain once, or maybe he did, but I didn’t hear it.

Even though just an hour ago, I was arguing with Fah, insisting I didn’t like him. Someone like me, liking someone like that short guy, and Fah didn’t force the issue much either; his tone sounded more resigned. It might have sounded like we were arguing, but in reality, I was the only one making a fuss.

Fah said we should talk about it properly once we’re back in Thailand; talking on the phone won’t resolve anything. Once we get back, there will be a lot more to discuss with Fah. Fah might start to understand why I’ve made things so complicated because, for me, this whole love thing has always seemed distant.    I never paid attention to it because I thought it wasn’t interesting at all, or even annoying. I’ve always overlooked what everyone else looks for.

When it gets close for the first time, I just don’t understand it. Don’t know how to deal with it. It probably starts with a thin line called accepting your feelings, and from there, it might bring a lot of chaos if I let myself sink deeper. Would I not be able to live without him like I can’t live without Direk and Mom?

And if I had to lose him, what would happen then?

Instead of preparing for just one heartbreak, would it be two?

       No way.

Then, it might be easier to stop myself from crossing that line from the start.

“If you miss this one, you won’t find another like him.”

Fah’s words echoed in my mind. He’s probably right; you couldn’t find someone like that even if you searched the whole world, but so what? If I get him and then have to lose him one day, it’s better not to have him in the first place.

Damn, that’s the thinking of a coward, isn’t it?

Sigh. I don’t like myself for being this way.

       “Hey.”

I turned around at the voice from behind; it was the little guy who was messing with my thoughts, peeking out from the balcony door.

    “What?”

“I want to ask about the drums, could you help me out?”

“…” I didn’t respond, just looked away and continued smoking, “Not now.”    “Okay.” He didn’t insist further. I heard the soft sound of the door closing, and I sighed without realizing it. If I stayed away from him, things would probably get better, no need to sit here and complicate things in my head. No need for the hassle or to deal with unfamiliar feelings, also avoiding any potential hurt.

Having decided that, I didn’t talk to him again until the morning of the next day. Even though we didn’t talk much normally, I didn’t initiate any conversation like I usually would. We had nothing to say to each other, from getting to the airport, stopping for a meal, to boarding the plane back to Thailand.

I took out my new headphones, searched for some music, and then remembered that the little guy had sent me his playlist because I’d asked for it before. When I tried listening, I still found myself liking it a lot.

The person sitting next to me was reading a new horror novel we had bought together. I was never into novels, but since I saw him reading, I decided to give it a try, and I found out novels can be quite fun too.

“…” He looked at me with slight confusion when I handed him the novel.

    “Here.”

    “You’re not reading it?”

“Too lazy.” I answered. It was the novel I had just bought. I probably wouldn’t have time to read it anyway, so I might as well give it to him. He seemed hesitant to take it, so I placed it on his lap before turning to look out the window.    Time passed until the surroundings started to darken. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the person next to me had dozed off, still holding the book.

He enjoyed it so much he didn’t want to let go of the book, huh?

I sighed again without realizing it. At first, I thought about taking the book to put it away, but then decided against it. I went back to focusing on something else and soon dozed off myself.

I woke up with a start, surprised to find the little guy leaning against me. Looking at him up close like this felt different from usual. Most importantly, he was incredibly warm and smelled nice.

I pushed him aside and went to the bathroom to wash my face, his scent still lingered. He doesn’t use cologne; someone like that short guy wouldn’t use cologne, right? The scent on my shirt must be a faint shampoo smell. I don’t remember my shampoo at home smelling like this; it must be because of him.

If that’s the case, he must smell really good.

       Damn.

       Shit.

       Fucking hell.

What are you thinking, Arthit? You’re acting like a creep, damn it!    Enough, stop thinking about that short guy, stop finding reasons to torture yourself!

I looked at myself in the mirror and saw that my expression was awful, like I was angry. No wonder the guy washing his hands next to me looked scared of something earlier; he quickly washed his hands and ran off.

It’s because that short guy leaned against me and got a shampoo smell on my shirt, that’s why I got weird looks!

I went back to sit down and found that the short guy had woken up and was reading the same novel. I sat down, not paying much attention, until he nudged me.

       “What?”

    “The story, it’s good.”

“No thanks.” I replied without looking at him. He didn’t say anything more. Why didn’t he buy it or ask about it at all? You’re too indifferent, I went out of my way to take you to buy it.

…And why should I care? I don’t even want to read it anymore!

When we got back to Thailand, I led the short guy to the car, he looked a bit tired. I drove back to the condo right away. I didn’t say a single word to him and went into my room, only to find out he was going to stay in the room next to mine.

What’s the big deal about being in adjacent rooms?

Not long after, I heard a knock at the door. I went to open it immediately to find Meen standing there.

       “Arthit, are you okay?”

    “What?”

“You look really irritated. Are you okay?”

“Irritated about what? Why would I be irritated?”

“Are you going to be mad at me for…”

“I’m not mad, I just…yeah, why did you knock on my door?”

“Just knocking on the door earns me a curse?” Meen said with a bored look. To be honest, she didn’t look so good, with dark circles under her eyes like someone who’s been on drugs, “I heard the door open, so I knew you were back and wanted to invite you for drinks.”

“I’m not drinking.” I replied before turning around and closing the door in her face, but she stuck her arm out to stop it.

“Ouch! Don’t close the door on my arm!”

“You put it there, what do you expect?”

“Drink with me, please, please, please.”

    “I’m not drinking, I’ve quit.”

“Quit tomorrow, please, I can’t take it anymore.” Meen said, making a sad face with tears welling up. I raised my eyebrows in surprise at her shaky voice.

    “What’s wrong with you?”

“Yeah, I’ll tell you later, just drink with me, my other friends can’t keep up, I’ve been drinking for several days straight.” She said, shaking my arm vigorously. I sighed heavily before nodding in agreement.

“Okay, okay. Fine, I’ll shower first, what time is it?”

“After you shower, we’ll go. I’m ready. You can invite someone else too. Yeah, I’ll invite Nong Dao as well.” She said, reaching out to knock on the next door. I slapped her hand down first. She looked at me, confused immediately, “Why slap my hand away?”

    “Don’t invite him.”

    “Why not?”

    “Just don’t.”

“Come on, what’s up? It’s more fun with more people, I owe him for helping me with the cooking issue.”

    “He can come, I won’t.”

“Damn, what’s wrong? Did you two fight?”

“We didn’t fight.” I said. I’ve decided to keep my distance from him, so why would you invite him to drink?

“You don’t like him or something? I thought you two would get closer after going abroad together.”

“We’re not close, nothing like that. Go wait in your room, I’ll come get you after I shower.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m going to shower.”

“Okay.” I said before closing the door. After finishing my shower, I got a call from North. What’s with all these people bothering me as soon as I get back, and I’m already in a bad mood.

    “What’s up?”

(You’re back from San Francisco, right?)

       “How did you know?”

    (I talked to Phipungto.)

       “Yeah, what’s up?”

    (Let’s play a game.)

“I’m about to go out for drinks.”

(Oh, really, that’s too bad. But drinks, huh? With whom?)

       “Choose.”

(I kind of feel like drinking too. Can I join? How many people?)

“There’s me, my friend named Man, two people.”

    (Oh, fuck, I’ll join.)

“Come then, but get Jo first.”

(One sec) North said before the line went silent for a moment, (Okay, Phii Jo says he’ll come too.)

“Oh, yeah. That’s good, I’ll send you the location of the place.”

(Four people then, can we invite anyone else?)

       “Up to you.”

(Then let’s invite Phipungto too, he’s in the room next to yours, so he can come out with us.)

       “No need to invite him.”

    (Why not?)

“Come on, no need to invite him.” I said, why are they all about inviting that short guy?

    (I’ll invite him.)

“Fuck off, North, I told you not to invite him.”

(Oh, calm down, why? Did you guys fight in San Francisco or what?)

“We didn’t fight, you bastard, why do you think we fought?”

(Then why can’t I invite him? It won’t be a problem for you on the way back, if he gets drunk, I’ll carry him back for you.)

“Sigh, I told you not to invite him, you little shit.”

(You must hate my friend for some reason, what did he do to you?) North started asking so much that I sighed heavily, indicating I’m annoyed to respond, but the person on the line doesn’t care. (Even if he can talk to ghosts, he shouldn’t have done anything to make you angry. He’s so quiet, nice too, he even helped you at the cemetery. Do you really hate my friend now?)

    “…”

(Fuck you, you ungrateful bastard. People like you aren’t good, huh.)

“Why the fuck am I being cursed out?”

(Don’t do anything to my friend, please.)

“Hey, what the fuck is wrong with you? I didn’t do anything.”

(Oh, so why can’t I invite him?)

       “He’s jet-lagged.”

(Oh. That’s all, I was speechless. Then let’s meet at the shop, you can send the location to Phii Jo’s Line.)

“Yeah.” I hung up the phone with a sigh of frustration, deciding to lie about the jet lag to end it. Who knows, maybe he’s really jet-lagged, he looked tired at the airport.

    …he looked tired.

At first, I didn’t think much of it, but what if he gets sick? He looked quite weak.

Ah, fuck it. It’s none of my business anyway!

Let’s go, let’s go, drinking will calm my nerves!

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Jo asked as soon as he arrived, before sitting down on the sofa next to me.

    “Nothing’s wrong with me.”

“Eat my foot, you’re fucked up.”

Me and Meen had been waiting for a while, coming in separate cars because we heard he was going to sleep somewhere else tonight.

Meen is in a terrible state, she said she would tell me the story later but once we got to the bar, she just kept chugging booze non-stop. She wouldn’t tell any damn thing because she clearly didn’t want to talk, so I didn’t ask further and just focused on my own glass of liquor.

I drank my glass dry in one go even though I hadn’t been at the bar for long, I had already slammed down quite a bit.

At first, Meen and this married couple from hell didn’t know each other, but that wasn’t a problem, not for North who could befriend even aliens.

    Aliens…like that short guy.

    Weird people doing weird things.

Like aliens, like people from another Dao planet, Daotok’s name isn’t because his parents prayed to Daotok for a child, it’s because he definitely came to this world with Daotok.

The story might be something like something fell from the sky, his parents found a capsule with a baby boy inside, took him in, and named him Daotok because they initially thought he was a fallen star.

    …What a dumbass.

Does this shitty booze make people dumber?

We kept drinking and chatting, the one who drank heavily just kept repeating the same words, going in circles, probably trying to accept the truth. I understand him, because accepting the truth is the hardest thing.

Yeah, accepting the truth is hard. Whether it’s about Mom or that short guy, the same goes for Mom, it took years to get better. I probably made the right choice not to let anyone into my life again.

    Yeah, I chose right.

But why does it still hurt?

I kept drinking glass after glass until I started feeling woozy, wanted to smoke, so I got up from the table to go to the smoking area outside the bar. After a while,

Jo came to lean against the balcony railing next to me, reaching out his hand towards me. So I handed him the cigarette and lighter with an understanding gesture.

I remember Jo quit smoking after North asked him to, but there are times when North allows him to smoke, it’s not easy for someone like Jo, but he’s trying to quit both booze and cigs for North.

Pretty surprising. I didn’t think someone like him would go that far, love is really scary shit.

“Are you still drinking even after being there?” the person next to me asked while gazing off into the distance, the breeze lazily carrying the gray cigarette smoke away.

“I’ve had enough, but I can drink more.” my words made Jo flash a grin.

    “You could die, you know.”

“I know, I’m a doctor.” I said, “I thought I would rest for real. After tonight.”

“But for some reason, I feel like tonight won’t be enough for you.”    “…” I looked at him, puzzled, after hearing that.

    “You still don’t look okay.”

“Before this, before coming back, I was okay.”

    “What does that mean?”

“Nothing.” I avoided answering. Earlier, I accidentally spoke out of drunkenness; I meant that the issue with my mother was settled, everything was okay before I came back until it was about that short one. I started feeling not so okay.

Because I can’t get him out of my mind…

Can it really just be a secret that goes away like this?

    “Jo.”

    “What?”

“Have you ever been like this?”

    “Like what?”

“Trying to get something out of your head, but you can’t.”

    “What do you mean?”

    “Answer first.”

    “Yes.”

    “When?”

“When I tried to get over North.”

“Oh, you told me you liked him and tried to move on but couldn’t, right?”    “Right.”

    “And what did you do?”

“Nothing could be done, I couldn’t get over it.”

“How many years has it been?”

    “Three.”

“Shit, three years.” I let out a big sigh after picturing it, “You didn’t go after him at first because he had a boyfriend, right?”

“Right, but why are you asking?”

“Just curious.” I replied, “but one day you’ll lose her anyway. Will you be able to handle it when that day comes?”

“No way.” the person next to me said. I replied, “But without North, I wouldn’t be able to handle it either. It might even hurt more.”

“Why’s that? Wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have her from the start?”    “Do you really think so?” I said to the person next to me, exhaling cigarette smoke, “Try asking yourself properly.”    “Why do I have to ask myself?”

“Who else then, the kid you went with?”

“…Shit.” I muttered quietly. It wasn’t surprising that he knew because it wasn’t hard to guess. Hearing this, Jo let out a small laugh.

“It happened to you too, huh?”

“Yeah, it happened to me, it’s fucking terrible.”

    “Might not be that terrible.”

“It’s terrible. I feel terrible right now.”

    “Why?”

“Because I don’t want to cross that line.”

“You’ve already crossed that line, Arthit.”

    “What do you mean?”

“Otherwise, you wouldn’t be thinking like this.”

I glanced at the person standing beside me smoking, seemingly without a care,

“When you first liked North, did you feel terrible like this too?”

“No.” Jo replied, “I felt terrible when I found out North had a boyfriend, and it got worse when I realized there was nothing I could do.”

    “Oh.”

“I never thought one day I’d be listening to love stories from someone like you.”

    “Fah said the same thing.”

“Hill probably wouldn’t even know what to say, I can imagine his face, complaining about you and your friends messing with my partner’s friends again.”

    “I didn’t do anything, don’t tell Hill.”

“That would be fun, I want to see Hill when he’s stressed, especially if he knows it’s you.”

“I wouldn’t find it fun, you got cursed out so badly, what would be left for me?” I said, remembering when Hill found out Jo was going to hit on North; Jo got cursed out to the point of feeling like a dog, and what would be left for me, the idiot.

    “No way, Hill might help.”

“He’ll definitely help me sleep peacefully.” I said with a sigh, “Forget it, it’s so complicated, you know, these feelings, I can’t handle them.”

    “What kind of feelings?”

“I don’t know, but I’ve never felt this way about anyone.”

“You’re so surprised you don’t know how to act.” Jo said with a smirk, “But didn’t you say you were going to back off?”

    “Yeah.”

“I understand why you’re scared.” Jo said softly, “At first, I also thought that once I got over it, everything would be easier. When I decided to move on, I was just like you are now.”    “Like me?”

    “Drunk and rambling.”

“Fuck…I don’t want to loop like you did.”

“You might not be like me. If you can get over it.”

“I should be able to.” I said. Even though I couldn’t get him out of my head all day. Just thinking about backing off hurts, but time should make it better, and then I’ll go back to how I was before I met him, “I have to be able to. It’s just that short one, what’s the big deal?”

“Yeah.” Jo nodded slightly, “But if there’s a day you realize you can’t back off, you better move forward before it’s too late.”

    “…”

“Because if he can make someone like you fall for him, others won’t stand a chance either.”

“No, that short guy has nothing special about him, man.”

“You say that like you don’t want anyone to look at him that way.”

    “…”

“Because right now he’s single, you don’t feel anything, but if you’re going to back off, do it before he gets taken, because if that happens, you might not even have the right to look.”

“But he’s my eye candy, man.”

    “Yours?”

“Fuck. Yeah. I just find it pleasing to look at him, others probably don’t feel the same way when they look at him.”

“Oh, are you sure? And what does it matter that you find him pleasing to look at when he already has someone with the exclusive right to look?”

“Yeah, fuck, damn annoying.” I said, somewhat irritated. Why, man? I just find that short guy pleasing to look at, why does some asshole have to stop me from looking? I was looking at him before you were.

       “Jealous, huh?”

    “Jealous my ass.”

“So, if it were you, you wouldn’t be annoyed? Would you share him or let others look at him?”

“Why would they look? There’s nothing worth looking at.”

“Sigh.” Jo exhaled in boredom, “Then you better stop looking before he gets taken. Don’t argue with me about him being your eye candy or whatever, I’ve told you, you won’t have the right.”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it. By then, I probably won’t want to look at him anymore anyway.”

“Good, hurry up then, because I heard North gave that kid’s Line ID to several of his engineering friends.”

“Huh?” I immediately furrowed my brows and turned to ask him after hearing that sentence, “North’s engineering friends? Wait, what the hell is your wife doing?”

“Just introducing his friend to other friends, what’s your problem with that?”    “…Nothing. No problem, why would I have a problem? But are North’s friends really that great?”

“Better than you, because compared to you; everyone on this planet is better.”

    “Fuck, Johan, you bastard.”

    “I’m going back inside, man.”

“Yeah, I’ll follow you.” I answered, then turned to finish my cigarette.

Meanwhile, Jo, who hadn’t even finished his, had already gone back inside.    During that time, I couldn’t help but think about all sorts of shit. Why the hell would that little shit North do that? I knew you’d betray me, I should have stopped you and Jo. No, why would I stop you? He gave his Line to that engineering friend, engineers aren’t good, as a junior who knows me, I don’t want him to end up with someone bad. Yeah, that’s right, it’s definitely like that.

       “North.”

    “What, Phii?”

“You gave your Line to that alien friend of yours?”

    “Alien?”

    “That short one.”

    “Short?”

“North, you idiot. I mean the kid from the room next to mine.”    “Oh, you should have said that from the start, bro. Yeah, I did. Why?”

The damn kid took a bite of some snack, looking at me with confusion.

“Why did you give it? Your friend is no good.”

“Huh? What’s wrong with my friend? Do you know him too?”

    “He’s an engineer, that’s why.”

    “And?”

“There’s nothing good about them except gears.”

“I’m also an engineer, you asshole, Arthit.” North said with an annoyed look,

“What’s your problem? Are you his guardian or something?”

“I’m just looking out for him, your friend isn’t right for him.”

“Huh? What do you care anyway? Do you like my friend or something?”

“Fuck off! Who would like him!” I accidentally raised my voice a bit, North looked even more confused, Jo was secretly laughing and shaking his head slightly. It was a good thing that the drunk one didn’t understand anymore. North looked at Jo, who was laughing, then made a surprised face, “Fuck, is it true?”    “No, it’s not.”

“Phii…fuck.” North was stunned, his mouth open, unable to say anything.    “I told you it’s not, you bastard.” I lowered my voice and tried to keep a straight face.

    “Fuck, why, man, why?”

    “What’s it to you?”

“Why does it have to be my friend?”

“Yeah, I want to know too…damn.” I sighed again after I accidentally spoke out loud. Fuck. No matter how many times, this drunkenness always comes back to bite me.

“…Oh, shit, I’m stunned, Phii Jo, what should North do?” Are you so lost that you have to ask your husband?

“He’s going to give up.” Jo replied.

    “Why?”

    “I have my reasons.”

“Why did you end up liking him?” North muttered, raising a hand to lightly scratch his head, “Giving up might be good, Phii, your chances of success are very low.”

    “Am I that bad?”

“Yeah, all my friends got blocked on LINE by Phipungto.”    “Really?” I asked to confirm, and North nodded in reply.

“You seem a bit happy about it, or am I imagining things?”

    “You’re imagining it.”

“But are you really going to give up?”

    “Yes.”

    “Is it your first love?”

    “Yeah.”

“That’s a shame.” North said with a slight pout, looking regretful, “If the person you liked was someone else, I would help out as much as I could, but I also want my friend to find someone good.”

    “Fuck.”

“I’m just kidding, but you’re going to give up now. No matter the reason, I’ll support you.”

    “Thanks.”

“Cheers! To forget about Phipungto!” North said, raising his glass of liquor. I lifted my glass to clink with his and drank it all down, letting the familiar bitter taste flow down my throat, through several more glasses until my vision started to blur. From being a bit dizzy at the start, now I couldn’t even walk straight.    Meen, who had been drunk for a while, had her friends take her to stay somewhere else. As for me, Jo supported me in the car.

“You’re this drunk and still chose to drive?”

“…At first, I didn’t think it would be this bad.”

“Then leave the car at the shop.”

    “Sorry, Jo, please.”

    “Sigh.”

The next thing I knew, someone was shaking me awake. Slowly, I managed to get up and get out of the car, wanting to walk to my room myself, but my eyes were completely crossed now.

It seemed like Jo was the one supporting me to walk to my room, with North leading the way.

“This should be the room, fuck. Just passing by the ghost’s room gives me goosebumps.” I heard North complain, “Where’s the key card, Phii?”    “Maybe in the left pocket of my pants.” I answered groggily. North carefully reached into my pants pocket, “Don’t touch my little brother, okay?”

“If he does I’ll cut your thing off then.” Johan, who was nearby, said. I let out a small laugh.

    “It’s not here.”

    “Really? Check the right side.”

    “It’s not there either.”

“Did it fall in the car?”

    “I checked before getting out.”

“Ha ha, damn it, I lost my key card again.” I said resignedly. Every time I get drunk, it goes missing. I’ll definitely have to fight with the condo management tomorrow or I’ll have to find another place to crash tonight.

“Sigh.” North sighed before going to knock on the door next door. I looked up to see the short guy with blue hair, the face that’s been spinning in my mind making me drink without savoring the taste, appearing at the door.

“What’s up, why are you coming so late?” He said before looking at me.

“Can we bother you? Arthit lost his key card again.”

“…” He didn’t answer, looked slightly uncomfortable, hesitated for a moment before letting out a sigh, “Okay.” I knew he wouldn’t refuse. It’s North asking, after all. If it were me asking alone, you’d probably leave me to be drained dry by mosquitoes outside.

       “Thanks, sorry for the trouble.”

Then Jo dragged me inside the room.

“Where do I put you?” Jo asked.    “Uh…if possible…can it be on the floor?”    Damn…

    “Can’t you get a bed?”

“Don’t be difficult, man.” Jo said before throwing me onto the floor. He just threw me down, not caring at all if I; his friend would get hurt.

I heard some muffled conversation for a while before hearing the door close; that hellish couple must have left.

Damn, Meen, you’re hopeless, I’m so thirsty.

“Hey.” I called out with a hoarse voice.

    “What?”

    “Water, please.”

After a while, he brought water and set it down. I tried to prop myself up to sit and drank the plain water, glancing at the room’s owner standing there; everything in front of me was blurred.

    “You.”

    “What?”

“Engineers are only good for gears, keep that in mind.”

    “…”

“If you have a choice, go for a doctor, trust me.”

    “…”
