   Jaeyoung glanced at the movie ticket and walked into the dark theater, as it was the last show and late, there weren’t many people. Besides the elderly couple sitting at the end of the row with them, there was no one else.

   The advertisements continued to play on the screen as. Jaeyoung said. Once they settled into their seats, Sangwoo took out his phone, turned it off, and put it back in his shirt pocket. As he leaned back in his seat, Sangwoo felt more relaxed, blinking slowly to drive away the restlessness.

   Just as he started to feel thirsty, Jaeyoung handed him a bottle of soda as if reading his mind. It was unclear why there was only one straw when he intended to drink alone. Sangwoo, who was about to complain, had to close his mouth again.

   ‘Why think too much about such a simple matter? We’ve already kissed.’  Because he knew what the other party would say in response.

   Sangwoo quietly sipped the soda. When he handed the glass to Jaeyoung again, the other party immediately turned to look and quickly sucked the black drink through the transparent straw.. Sangwoo wondered why the other party had to stare at someone else while drinking.

   The flickering light inside the dimly lit venue caused one side of Jaeyoung’s face to change with the alternating brightness and darkness, the shadow of his nose bouncing on his cheek. Even though he had just taken a sip of soda,

   Sangwoo felt his mouth dry, and his eyes, which hadn’t blinked, began to sting.

   Who would be the winner in this long-lasting staring contest? It might be Jaeyoung because when the light from the screen went out, Sangwoo closed his eyes and leaned closer to the other person’s lips.

   Although he pulled away due to the sudden scream of “Help!” accompanied by the sudden brightening of the surroundings,. Sangwoo still felt embarrassed. At first, he thought the other party was asleep, then he claimed it happened because of being drunk. As for the other times, they happened with mutual consent and willingness. But this time, he did it without permission while the other party was still unaware, and while closing his eyes with embarrassment, he missed the first half of the movie.

   ‘It’s over.’

   Sangwoo doesn’t like that at all. When he turned around to look for the root cause of his deception, he found that the other party was just staring at the screen with a blank expression, fingers resting on the armrest naturally like a spider. Sangwoo forced his body to turn back and look ahead.

   Fortunately, the story’s content is simple enough to understand without any problems, even if you missed the beginning. The story involves extraterrestrial humans who can fly at the speed of light. They have skin that is resistant to all physical damage and harness solar energy as a power source. In brief, the story revolves around a superhuman from another planet who must thwart the plans of enemies who intend to use his weaknesses against him.

   Sangwoo feels conflicted for two reasons. First, there are many aspects of the movie that he doesn’t understand. Second, Jaeyoung keeps moving his hand, appearing calm amidst the darkness, with a hand that reflects white light, never staying still. When. Sangwoo accidentally taps on the armrest, the other side extends his fingers as if stretching a string, sometimes flipping his hand up to reveal it. Sangwoo intentionally avoids looking at Jaeyoung’s face throughout the two and a half hours, so he doesn’t know if the muscles on his face move as well, but he only sees his hand, which makes him feel disconnected from his own body and self-awareness.

   After the movie ends, they quietly walk out of the theater. Then they take the elevator down to the ground floor. When they step outside, their arms touch the warm air, the night sky is dark and serene, and the walkway is gray. Time passes unnoticed until it’s past one o’clock, and the bustling streets near Jongno-dong are empty.

   “How was the movie?”

   After nine minutes of silence, Jaeyoung speaks up, his right hand casually reaching into his pocket.

   “Should we consider superhumans as animals or plants?”

   “What are you talking about?”

   “Well, he said they use air and sunlight as an energy source. Although their physical structure is complex like humans, when they live by photosynthesis, they should be classified more as plants than animals, shouldn’t they?”

   “Um… I don’t know.”

   “And in the movie, there’s a scene where he says he wants to shave his mustache. How does he shave? Even if it’s exposed to the explosion of a supernova, it wouldn’t burn, right? Ordinary razors made of steel probably wouldn’t work either.”

   “Hmm…”

   “It’s kind of pitiful that he lost to kryptonite.”

   That was the only scene that Sangwoo watched and felt immersed in the movie. It was a scene where the superhuman, who was invincible, was defeated by a piece of jewelry from his home planet, simply by bringing the green gem close to his skin, which became as vulnerable as a regular human under the influence of uranium radiation. Sangwoo felt a warmth inside him, as if it were his own story.

   “It’s the Death Ex-Mach of the superhero series.”

   “What is that?”

   “Simply put, it’s a cheating formula. If you’re too good, it’s not fun, so there has to be some crypton to make Superman vulnerable. Even though in the end he can easily win and seem useless.”

   “Oh…”

   “Most superhero movies are like this. People focus more on the action scenes than the storytelling that is already familiar. No one cares about the synthesis of light and beard shaving, what matters is that Superman is super handsome, super strong, on the side of humanity, and wears different tight suits.”

   Jaeyoung waved his left hand, drawing a complex circular pattern in the air, and when he finished speaking, he grabbed the front of his shirt that he was wearing and fanned himself to cool off. Sangwoo looked at the side profile of the other person’s face, which seemed to have gained some special knowledge today.

   “I didn’t know before that you are also smart like me.”

   “What do you see me as?”

   “So, is it fun not?”

   “Yes, after watching a movie, you must have some feelings, right?”

   “Um… I don’t know. It’s a strange movie.”

   Sangwoo wanted to know the other person’s opinion, he asked back, “And what about you, hyungnim?” Hearing that, Jaeyoung, who had been walking and looking straight ahead, turned to meet Sangwoo’s gaze and replied.

Sangwoo shifted his feet again and quickened his pace until they were walking side by side.

   “It doesn’t make sense. You said you didn’t watch the movie, but you said it was fun. This means one of them is a lie.”

   “That’s true for both of us.”

   “How can you feel entertained if you didn’t watch the movie?”

   “Try using your imagination, Samchun.”

   As soon as he heard the somewhat vague answer, he immediately understood. Sangwoo’s futile attack had backfired, and he bowed his head and continued walking.

   After leaving the park, they came across a long straight wall that was a famous landmark in Seoul. Sangwoo had been here before with his ex-girlfriend when they were still together, and he remembered how crowded it was, making him annoyed. But today was quiet and deserted, not even a single soul in sight, and that might be the reason why he felt excited and overwhelmed.

   They continued walking without saying a word, only looking straight ahead. However, in the corner of his eyes, he could see Jaeyoung’s left hand, even though his right hand adjusted his coat, touched his neck, or slipped into his pocket. The left hand remained abandoned by his side, and it only twitched and jerked since they left the cinema one minute ago. Two minutes passed. Three minutes passed. Until Sangwoo felt uneasy. At that moment, he looked down at his watch and realized it was almost two o’clock.

   ‘Who said it was a shortcut?’

   Although it had been two hours since he last slept, his mind remained clear. Moreover, he felt more awake than usual. Sangwoo prepared himself for any teasing from the other party, silently observing everything from their breathing patterns, hand movements, to the wrinkles on Jaeyoung’s pants.

   “Jaeyoung Hyung.”

   “What?”

   It was somewhat embarrassing to ask if they could hold hands. Sangwoo didn’t know what to say.

   “Is it still far until we reach the parking lot?”

   “We’re here.”

   It felt like waves of turmoil were surging in his chest, and the trapped beast was urging him to quickly hold hands. Otherwise, who knows what might happen. Sangwoo tightly closed his eyes, extended his hand forward without any choice.

   The tips of the fingers naturally passed through Jaeyoung’s swinging hands. Without realizing it, both of them coordinated without knowing. Sangwoo secretly took a light breath, his hand holding on to the swinging hand, giving him a strange feeling as if an electric current was flowing throughout his body.

   “Hyungnim.”

   “What?”

   “Nothing.”

   But it didn’t end there. Even though they were holding hands with the other party, the beast within Sangwoo stirred and demanded something more. Even though he tried to say no, to help maintain appearances, it didn’t listen.

   “Hyung.”

   “What?”

   He endured the tormenting urge until they finally reached the parking lot, his hands soaked in sweat. If it could be wrung out like a wet cloth, it would probably fill a bucket.    “I used to think you were a person without imagination. I guess I have to rethink that.”

Then he turned his body back to find his notebook. Soon after, he heard the loud sound of the chair wheels, “Crrrkk.” as Jaeyoung pushed himself away from the table.

“Just the two of us?”

Sangwoo nodded, feeling the gaze that stared at his side profile, causing a warm sensation on his cheeks. Jaeyoung kept staring like that for a while before speaking up.

“Is it not weird for two men to go watch a movie together?”

Sangwoo glanced at the computer screen. At that moment, he truly thought so. He hadn’t changed his mind now, but there was no excuse to say such things anymore.

“We’ve done more than that.”

Sangwoo would drink water and have a meaningless conversation with Jaeyoung before checking the work that Jaeyoung had completed. Then he would work for another hour before going to the bathroom. When he returned, it was time to go home.

“You didn’t really disturb me today. And you didn’t tease me either. You’re very patient.”

Sangwoo said that as he packed up his notebook and mouse, there was a lot of work done on both graphic work and system development that should be done efficiently. Jaeyoung lazily twisted his wrist to look at the wall clock.

“It’s already four o’clock. Are you leaving now?”

“When it’s time to go, I have to go.”

Sangwoo put his notebook in his backpack and zipped it up. As he slung the backpack over his back, preparing to leave the room, Jaeyoung called out.

“Sangwoo.”

When he turned his head to look, saw the other person pulling down the folded shoelaces of his sneakers, if he was about to go outside. He didn’t know where he was going.

“I want to send you home. What do you think?”

“Why?”

   Yoona ignored those words. Sangwoo brought up the phone’s contact list. When he typed, ‘Virtual Arts Design, Choi Yu,’ he paused. He was confident that the next character couldn’t be ‘Choi’ for sure, but when he called like that frequently, became confused.

   “Please.”

   Jaeyoung, who was looking at the screen together side by side, said meaningfully. When he pressed the save button, the phone disappeared from his hand immediately. It was Jaeyoung who pulled his own number.

   When he saw the name displayed on the screen, he smirked.

   “I didn’t raise my hands, it’s not fair like this. I didn’t successfully catch you back then.”

   “Once I give you a name, I don’t like changing it. Besides, I rarely use my mobile phone anymore… unless I’m searching for something while outside.”

Jaeyoung fed the remaining portion into Sangwoo’s mouth with an indifferent expression. Sangwoo chewed on the dumpling stuffed in his mouth. Whether it was because he ate too much or because the dumpling was hot, he felt the surrounding atmosphere becoming warmer.

“Why is it so hot today?”

“That’s just how it is.”

Jaeyoung placed the tray down and took off his hat, placing it on the table. With both hands, he grabbed the collar of his sweatshirt and pulled out in one motion, revealing the white T-shirt underneath that hugged his belly, making Sangwoo forget how to breathe. That belly, there were visible muscles occupying the space.

Jaeyoung tossed his own shirt onto the folding bed and put on the hat again. His bare arms, unseen at first, drew attention, and Sangwoo carefully observed the muscles and veins on Jaeyoung’s arms, some which were hidden beneath the sleeves. Although he didn’t want to think about what he did to those arms on the car that night, he couldn’t stop himself from doing so.

Suddenly, Jaeyoung turned to meet the gaze. Startled, Sangwoo quickly looked back at the computer screen that hadn’t booted up yet and pretended to adjust the mouse that he hadn’t lifted.

The next day, it had been a long time since Sangwoo lived peacefully like this. Although he and the designer disagreed on the issue of releasing it for free play[1] it wasn’t a heated argument.

At 20:43, Yoona said she would order pizza because she would stay up late tonight and asked for opinions on what type of food they wanted.

Jaeyoung hesitated and said he wouldn’t eat unless it was a specific brand. Despite not being the one paying, Yoona scolded him for being picky but still ordered pizza from the mentioned restaurant.

Jaeyoung picked up another slice and put it in his own mouth, while Yoona pulled a chair to their table.

“Why don’t you give me some?”

Without realizing it, Jaeyoung placed his hand on the back of Sangwoo’s hand holding the mouse. Jaeyoung was focused on the computer screen.

Sangwoo missed the timing to withdraw his hand.

‘Uh… ah, huh?’

In the midst of confusion and fluster, Jaeyoung held onto his hand and clicked the mouse, moving it nonchalantly to adjust the timeline and resize the image.

“How’s the preview?”

Upon hearing that, Sangwoo regained his composure, pulled his hand away, and pressed a shortcut key. Then the result of Jaeyoung’s actions appeared in a new window. The same duration as before, but with added effects that made it more lively. Sangwoo stared at the computer screen.

“Chu Sangwoo.”

“Yes.”

“This is not a competition. Remember that we’re working together. Who do you think is  better at graphics, is it you or I?”

“You hyung.”

“So who should be the leader?”

Jaeyoung walked briskly and placed his bag on the table, while Sangwoo looked outside again.

“Because using fossil fuels carelessly accelerates the greenhouse effect, you know.”

“Yes.”

There was a loud crackling sound from the back as the plastic bag was rustling. Sangwoo followed his gaze to the illuminated university landscape before returning to his seat. Jaeyoung was stirring something in a paper cup.

Although he didn’t ask, the other party mentioned that it was almond milk. Then he took out a foam box from the bag. When he removed the

rubber band, six large dumplings were revealed.

   The next day, Sangwoo’s daily life was the same as yesterday. No matter how he tried to study programming, it didn’t sink in. When he tried to read ahead to prepare for future lessons, there was no motivation.

   ‘Just one day off won’t hurt.’

   Midterm exams were over, and he had no classes. On top of that, he encountered something shocking. He had the right to take a break, just like a tired person, a person with a long back, a lazy person like Jang Jaeyoung.

   But it’s harder than he thought. If he doesn’t play games or take a nap during the day, time doesn’t go by. Sangwoo doesn’t know how to be lazy, at his mother’s house there are plenty of toys to play with to kill time, but when he goes out alone with his focus on studying, he never takes those things with him.

   He walks around in a small room looking for something to do, and in the end, he wastes time moving furniture that is already clean, cleaning the bathroom, doing laundry, and going out to buy things to fill the shelves.

   When he refreshes his email inbox, there are emails just like yesterday.

   The sender is ‘Jae. J’, and the subject of the email is today’s schedule and all the postponed tasks. As he was about to click and open the email, Sangwoo’s gaze shifted to the bright phone screen. There was an incoming call.

   When he saw who was calling, he reached out and grabbed the phone to answer the call immediately, without having time to consider if it was appropriate or not. His body responded before he could think. Sangwoo opened his eyes wide and held the phone like that for a moment. It was strange whether he answered without saying, “Hello.” or held the line without saying anything. Sangwoo slowly raised the phone to his ear.

   The sudden greeting almost made him drop the phone. Sangwoo held the phone tightly, pursed his lips several times before reluctantly letting out a voice.

   “What’s up?”

   [It’s time, but I haven’t heard from you.]

   “I’ve prepared the prototype, but since there’s no meeting, I didn’t bother showing it.”

   [That’s great. I thought you wouldn’t do it again.]

   “I’m not your hyung.”

   Then the words stopped. Sangwoo wondered about the faint interference that followed the line. How would Jaeyoung, who was also holding his phone, look like, what posture he was in, what type of pajamas he wore, whether he wore glasses or not, and felt strange thinking such things.

   After a moment, Jaeyoung spoke softly, making Sangwoo’s hand holding the phone tense up. The communication tool that was already intimate with his ear was pressed even tighter than before.

   [Well then, I’ll continue.]

   Well then, ‘I’ll continue,’ is it? That’s a strange use of words.

   [There are three main reasons: First, a lot of work has been done. It would be regrettable to cancel it now, and the results should turn out well.]

   Sangwoo always thought people cried too much. For example, when children gathered together on the last day of camp, lit incense, sang soft songs, and stimulated emotions. Among the sobbing crowd, like broken cogs, Sangwoo often stood out as someone who remained unaffected.

   ‘Hey, kid, why are you the only one not crying?’

   ‘I’m not sad.’

   Even if he watched a sad movie, he wouldn’t be moved because no matter how sad it was, it was just a story in a film. It didn’t affect Sangwoo.    Sangwoo moved the mouse to open the browser while still slumping at the table, and clicked on Jaeyoung’s SNS from his bookmark list.    Sangwoo opened the email and just stared at it for three minutes. He didn’t know what the other party wanted him to do. After creating that chaos, the other party acted like nothing happened.
