GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 5: Dreams Foretelling Events

“Chief, we haven’t found the suspect.”

       “I’ll go around the back.”

“Roger that.” The young officer watched the director’s back. It’s not often you see someone of his rank on the ground. The admiration in his eyes grew, especially since it was a drug dealer bust.

Singha walked along the zinc building to the back, holding his gun in a standard grip before stopping when he heard footsteps approaching. As soon as he saw the suspect peek around the corner, Singha swiftly kicked the black gun away.

The suspect threw a punch, but Singha managed to deflect it in time. He struck the suspect’s face before pulling out his handcuffs.

       “You have rights-”

       Thwack!!

Before he could finish his sentence, the other guy swung his arm, landing a solid punch on Singha’s right cheek. The numbness and the taste of blood didn’t faze the young cop; he just spat out the bloody saliva and looked up at the terrified drug dealer.

“Damn it.” Normally, he should read the criminal his rights before arresting him, but if the guy was knocked out cold, that wouldn’t be necessary.

A swift kick to the chest sent the criminal sprawling before he could continue, but just as he was about to kick the man again, the dealer managed to grab his gun…

       BANG!!!!

“Phii Singha!!” Thup jolted awake, drenched in sweat.

He had just returned from dealing with some photos at the studio. After starting some chores, he dozed off on the sofa. The dream, vivid and terrifying, made Thup’s heart race. He grabbed his phone to call the first number saved, but there was no answer, increasing his worry.

“Phii Singha, please pick up, please!” The young man paced anxiously. Today was their seventh anniversary, and Thup didn’t want to think about any superstitions or tales.

The seven-year curse, believed by many to mark a change for long-term couples. Though there were no warnings, when it hit, smooth-sailing love could suddenly hit turbulence. Some fell out of love, some broke up, some departed… and some died.

Thup decided to call Darin instead, since the older man wasn’t answering. Last night, he remembered Singha mentioning he’d be back in the evening after dealing with the drug case. Thinking about those words only heightened Thup’s anxiety. It was like his dream, especially since the last time he had a dream like this, it turned out to be true, when he encountered a murder case in the forest.

    [What’s up, Thup?]

“Phii Rin, is Phii Singha with you? Is Phii Singha at the station?”

[Singha went out on a case, it should be sorted by now.]

“I can’t reach Phii Singha at all.”

[Then I’ll go ask the lieutenants.]

Thup waited anxiously. He glanced at the gifts and a large bouquet of white roses on the table, prepared for tonight, and his eyes welled up.

If something happened to Phii Singha, what would he do…

    [Hello, is Thup still there?]

       “Yes.”

[Well… Singha is in the hospital…]

The phone fell from his hand due to gravity. Thup felt his legs weaken; he tried to breathe, tears streaming down his face, something stuck in his throat.

Gathering his strength, he stood up, grabbed his wallet, and walked out to call a taxi at the village entrance. Driving himself now would be disastrous. During the ride, Thup kept staring at his clenched, bloodless hands. He questioned why this was happening, how he would cope. Negative thoughts overwhelmed him so much he didn’t notice the taxi had stopped at the hospital.

The young man ran into the hospital in tears, dashing aimlessly, not knowing whom to ask, unsure if he could bear the truth. As he ran, a voice called out from behind, making him freeze.

“Thup!!” The young man stiffened, afraid to turn around. If he turned and it wasn’t really Singha, what then? “What are you doing here, and why are you barefoot?”

“Phii Singha…” Thup turned around, face covered in tears, shocking the older man into running towards him. “Phii Singha, sob…”

“What’s wrong?! Are you hurt somewhere, Thup?!” Warm hands cupped Thup’s face, and just like that, the young man burst into tears before collapsing to his knees, “Thup!!”

“You are really warm, still warm.” he sobbed.

“I’m here, don’t cry, be a good boy.” Singha had no idea what was wrong with the boy in front of him. He saw Thup dash by, looking distressed, so he called him over. Seeing the state he was in and how hard he was crying, Singha was even more worried. He embraced his loved one, stroking his soft hair and back to comfort him, unabashed by onlookers.

After nearly half an hour, Thup calmed down and fell asleep from exhaustion. He sat in a hospital chair outside the operating room because there weren’t many people around, and he had to wait for the doctor to update him on the condition of the assailant. His large hand still held Thup’s slender one, and his shoulder also served as a pillow for Thup.

“Singha, wheeze, where, where is Nong Thup?” Darin ran over, out of breath, unable to speak properly. Behind her, a beautiful lawyer with jet-black hair in a suit followed. His sharp, slightly haughty face matched his tall, dignified posture. He gently rubbed Darin’s back and handed her water.

“He’s asleep. No idea what’s wrong.”

“Little Phii, wheeze, he called me.”

“Drink first, Rin, then talk.” she said calmly with concern, pushing Darin to sit next to Singha.

“I told you I was in a hurry.” Darin complained to his girlfriend.

“I know, I know, stop whining and drink.” Tatcha, the capable lawyer, replied, soothing Darin’s back after they met during a case where Darin had to testify as a medical witness.

“See, Singha, he called me earlier, asked where you were, but his voice was short and he sounded worried. When I said you were at the hospital, he hung up. I thought he must have misunderstood.”

“Yeah, probably. I saw him running around without shoes, crying.”

“Sorry, man. Didn’t think he’d get so scared. Just wanted to tell you that you brought the assailant to the hospital, but I didn’t get the chance.”

“Yeah, no problem then. And where were you?”

“Waiting for Tatcha at the station, we were about to go out for lunch.”

“Then let’s go, waiting for Thup to wake up and I’ll head back.”

    “What about the criminal?”

“Singha.” a voice interrupted the conversation, making all three turn to look, “Oh, Merk, what are you doing at the hospital?”

“Probably here to see the dog-faced woman.”

“You’re the dog!” Darin retorted immediately, earning a laugh from Merk.

“I’m here to question a witness in a case. What are you guys doing here?”

“Singha brought the criminal to get the bullet removed. Here comes the doctor now.” Darin pointed towards the doctor walking out of the door.

“Oh, hello Phii Singha, Phii Darin.”

“Am I not a dog?” Merk protested when the kid in front didn’t seem inclined to greet him.

    “In the mouth, right?”

    “Charn, stop whining.”

“That one’s whining, why didn’t you go back to my room last night?”

“Because you were probably trying to lure me.”

Singha rolled his eyes at the two in front who never came to a conclusion on this matter.

“Are you still arguing about this?” Another newcomer’s voice made Singha wish he could make the sleeping kid disappear right now. “I told you to take turns.”

“Screw that. Why would I agree to that?” Merk replied before narrowing his eyes at Chan, who was raising his eyebrows, “What are you doing here, Say?”

“Here to pick up a body for an autopsy.”

    “Isn’t Blue coming?”

Merk asked before brushing Charn’s hand away.

“Hold on, I’m just buying some snacks up ahead. So, what are you all doing here?”

“Let me summarize.” Darin volunteered, standing up and taking a deep breath.

“Singha brought the criminal for treatment, and the doctor handling the case is Charn. Merk is here for case documents, me and Tatcha are here because of Nong Thup. Nong Thup is here because of Singha, that’s it.”

“Complicated.” Say commented succinctly after hearing the explanation.

    “Very.” Singha added.

“Mmm.” The sound from someone who had just woken up silenced everyone instantly, “How’s it going, you dog?”

    “Phii Singha.”

“Here.” Singha tightened his grip on the hand he was holding, “The guy inside, how is he?”

“He’s out of danger now, the bullet’s been removed. Currently, he’s been moved to the ICU for recovery.”

“We’ll have the police guard him.”

“Have your underlings contact me. And you, following me here, do you know how many hours I waited for you last night with dinner ready?” Charn dragged Merk away by the collar.

    “Ouch, ouch, you little brat.”

“Then let’s go, it’s almost reservation time.” Tatcha stood up, wrapping his arm around Darin’s waist.

“Okay, okay, Singha, Say, I’m heading out, apologize to Nong Thup for me.”

    “Mm, go ahead.”

“Go, go, take the kid home. Check his foot wound too.” Say advised, noticing Thup’s bare feet.

“Phii Say, Blue brought coffee.” The kid who just walked in handed over a coffee, the owner of the red hair, “Hello, director.”

“Mm, then I’ll take Thup back, you handle everything here.”

    “Alright.”

    “Uh.”

Singha led the quiet kid by the hand into the car and drove straight home. The entire way was unusually silent, but he chose not to ask until they reached Singha’s house, where he walked in.

After settling Thup on the sofa, he went to the bathroom and returned with a basin of water and a clean cloth. He knelt in front of Thup, soaking his fair feet in the water, gently rubbing them clean, only to find blood seeping from the sole.

    “Phii Singha.”

“Why did you go out without shoes? You’re hurt now.”

“I dreamed…” Thup pulled his vacant gaze back to look at the older brother before recounting everything—the dream, the curse, the worries.

Singha dressed the wound while listening, then dropped everything to embrace the sudden hug. He could only comfort with a silent hug; everything Thup recounted matched perfectly, except it wasn’t him who got shot. At the moment the criminal aimed at him, he dodged, disarming the shooter, causing the gun to fire accidentally into the criminal’s own abdomen.

“Stop crying now, you’ll get a headache.”

“What would I do if something happened to you?”

“Look at me, Thup. I’m right here, right in front of you. We’re together now. No one’s going anywhere, understand?” Singha pushed Thup back slightly to hold his delicate face. He didn’t know what Thup saw in the dream or how terrifying it was, “See?” But judging by the fear in those eyes, he couldn’t let go, “Uh.” Thup nodded tearfully before hugging the older man again.

About half an hour later, Singha sent his younger brother to take a shower and freshen up. Meanwhile, he looked over the many items on the dining table. His stern morning face slowly formed a rare smile. There was cake with the frosting melting to reveal the bread inside, a white gift box, and a bouquet of flowers, all with Post-its attached in handwriting he recognized.

“You don’t like sweets, so I ordered one with fresh cream, it’s not too sweet.

“This gift, you’ll definitely use. I’ll wait to see.”

“Do you like white roses? I’ll go pick them out at the shop myself.”

Singha read every word carefully. It’s not that he hadn’t thought about what might happen during the mission, but it’s unavoidable when you’re in this line of work. He had already talked to Thup, and the kid understood, but this time it might really shake him up because of a bad dream that turned out to be true, just like last time.

“Phii Singha.” The hoarse voice, the tight embrace, and a chin resting on a shoulder made Singha turn to look. He buried his nose hard into the smooth cheek upon seeing Thup’s nose and under eyes so red it was endearing. “Are you hungry? Thup can go make something to eat.”

“I’ve already ordered. Let’s eat takeout today.”

“Sorry for startling you, and also sorry… for making this anniversary day all about some unknown stuff.”

“We’ll make up for it next year.”

“I rushed out without putting the cake in the fridge.” A hug around the waist, then a sigh, Thup tightened his embrace.

“I’ll eat you as dessert.” Singha flipped back to look at the person behind, the clear face of the puppy. “Did the wound on your foot get wet?”

    “No.”

    “Headache?”

    “No.”

    “Hungry yet?”

    “Not yet.”

    “Want me?”

“No-.” Thup paused immediately, eliciting loud laughter from Singha.

    “You pervert.”

“Are you tired? Tired of me, Phii Singha?”

    “Tired.”

    “Sorry-”

“I’m tired of you always hurting yourself, tired of you apologizing for nothing.” Singha raised his arm to embrace the neck of the person in front of him, then stared seriously into the light brown eyes, “I love you so much, Thup. Whether it’s a seven-year curse, ten years, or a hundred, I don’t care. If you love me, you must love yourself more because I hate seeing you hurt. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“I understand, I love you a lot too, and I understand your job is dangerous. I know people are born, age, get hurt, and die, but I want to be here with you, to hug you, kiss you, hold your warm body. Not the cold corpse or something I can’t touch.”

“Then do it, do everything you want… together.” Their noses touched, “Do everything well while we still have this loving opportunity. Agreed?”

    “Agreed.”

Their lips met and pressed together until there was no space left, each savoring the familiar sweetness, both entrusting faith and love.

    “Happy anniversary, Phii Singha.”

“Happy anniversary to you too, Thup.”

Forever and best wishes to each other.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 4: The Curse at the Three-Way Intersection

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 4: The Curse at the Three-Way Intersection

On the road into the city at night, it was eerily quiet, traffic was sparse, and if it weren’t necessary, no one would want to drive at three in the morning. But there were some who couldn’t avoid it…

A large truck transporting livestock had just returned from delivering prime cattle to a farm in a nearby province. The mind of a man, soon to be a father, was more eager to get to his wife at the hospital than to stop at a gas station for a break. His tired eyelids slowly closed before his body jolted awake again.

“So sleepy, man.” The driver tried to wake himself up, but driving for days on end, plus the sun and fatigue, meant his eyelids drooped again just minutes later.

The large truck’s head slowly veered out of its lane as his hands lost control, just as his body was about to succumb to sleep, a sound from the side of the truck rang out first.

    Thump!!

“Hey, what the heck!” The driver’s eyes widened in shock before he yanked the steering wheel, guiding the car back onto the path, “That was close, huh?”

The road ahead captured the middle-aged man’s attention, completely forgetting the sound next to the car. A few meters later, he noticed a young woman in a red skirt waving by the roadside.

“Who’s out here so late?” He flicked on the turn signal and pulled over immediately, his drowsiness making him forget all the tales truck drivers told.

    Do not greet.

       Do not look.

       Do not ask.

       Do not stop…

“Could I get a ride, please? The taxi left me here.”

“Get in, get in, but where are you heading so late?” The man behind the wheel asked, looking at the long-haired teenage girl who sat beside him.

    “I went out with friends.”

“Oh, it’s dangerous to be out this late. Why did the taxi leave you here?” He thought it was nice to have company, so he pulled over by the roadside, forgetting that this road wasn’t one for the living to travel.

The sobbing sound sent chills down the driver’s spine. He reached to lower the air conditioning but noticed from the corner of his eye that the girl beside him wasn’t just wearing red; it was splattered all over the seat. Her pale, fragile body now bore wounds, blood seeping out, covering the seat and dripping to the floor.

“They beat me, stabbed me, slit my throat, robbed me.”

As the sobbing turned into a voice of pain, the driver trembled with fear. He tried chanting, spreading kindness, and various prayers, but when what you want to dispel doesn’t accept your chants, they become just another poem.

The driver’s eyes trembled with fear, tears welling up as he struggled with all his might to keep the truck under control, desperate to avoid an accident.

It’s said that the three-way intersection is a crossover point between the human world and the spirit world, where various spirits wander, seeking replacements or revenge. Some say it’s an unlucky spot, ominous, attracting only evil. Hence, you often see offerings, flowers, candles placed there, or frequent accidents at this very spot.

    This time was no different…

The path ahead, where the truck was speeding, led to that infamous three-way intersection with its flickering orange light. He tried braking repeatedly, but there was no response. He did everything possible to survive, but it seemed the forces around him were merciless. If it were a wandering spirit, a ghost seeking redemption might have saved him, but instead, the ghost beside him was one of vengeance.

She was the stuff of legends among drivers on this route. They say if you see a girl in red flagging you down by the road, keep driving until you pass the intersection.

The driver inhaled deeply, his heart pounding. The intersection was in sight. If he made it through, he vowed never to return this way again.

“Uncle… I’m not going anymore. Please stop.”

The driver slammed the brakes with all his might. Was he safe now?

His fear-filled face slowly turned to the passenger seat, only to find a blood-soaked red dress… with no head.

“Hee, hee, hee, we’ve stopped now, haven’t we?”

The voice and the increasing weight on his lap made him glance down. White, lifeless eyes and a broad smile stared back at him. The pale, scarred face from knife wounds, with flesh hanging loose, belonged to the head of the girl now resting on his lap.

    Brrrrrr!!!!

He looked up through tear-stained eyes at the approaching bright lights. It wasn’t that he was nearing the intersection; he was already stopped right in the middle of it.

    Chroooom!!!!

The phone by the bedside irritates Singha into waking up.

    “What is it?”

[Director, there’s been another truck collision at the same old intersection.]

       “Have they cleared the scene?”

[Yes. It was spotted around 5 AM, but it probably happened about two hours earlier.]

       “What about the drivers?”

[One died at the scene. The other is critical; we’re contacting relatives.]

“Clear the road, I’ll be there soon.” Singha sighed, turning back to the young man behind him.

    “Again?”

“Mmm, sorry for waking you.” He looked down, his rough hand stroking the soft hair of the younger man in his embrace.

“I’ve been awake since the phone rang, just wanted to keep hugging you.” said the 31-year-old, still acting the same as ever. He tightened his grip around Singha’s waist, kissing the bare chest marked with rosy love bites tenderly. “Same spot for the accident?”

“Mmm.” Singha let the younger man continue his affectionate kisses and caresses without objection. “That intersection isn’t even busy. Don’t know why accidents keep happening there.”

“Intersection? Is it a three-way junction there?” Thup propped himself up on his elbow to look at Singha.

“Yeah.” Singha replied shortly, eyeing the neck dotted with his own kisses, leaning in for another.

    “Then it’s a three-way junction curse, right?”

“So what?” He moved down to the pale chest under the light pajamas, starting to indulge himself.

“Because, uh, Phii Singha, you told me to speak first.” Thup looked down at his older lover, who was licking around a mole on his chest through the fabric.

“Go on, I’m listening.” he said, his face blushing.

“So, it might not just be an accident.” Thup grabbed the older man’s hand, which was hovering near the edge of his sleepwear. The young man, in his early thirties, flipped his older lover onto his chest before pinning both his wrists. “If you keep teasing me like this, we’ll be late for work.”

Singha chuckled softly before sitting up to straddle Thup. He looked at Thup’s increasingly mature face with pride. Now, the young man in front of him wasn’t just a freelancer hoping to save up; Thup had joined an agency, gained recognition, and even had his own art exhibitions. This kid had grown up a lot.

“Have I ever told you how proud I am of you?”

    “Hmm? Maybe not…”

“I’m really proud of you, Thup.” The sparkle in his eyes and the flat tone of his voice made Thup smile broadly. He had received many compliments from Singha over the past year, but none compared to this.

“All of my successes are yours, Phii Singha.” Thup sat up to hug the older man’s waist, then gently kissed his perfectly tanned cheek. “Thup loves you a lot.”

“What’s with the sweetness?” Singha wrapped his arms around Thup’s neck, feeling something pushing against him through the fabric.

“You’re the one teasing me.” he whispered.

“Heh, once is enough. Hurry up, we need to go to work.”

“Since we’re already in this position, you start, please.” Thup nibbled on Singha’s chin before sliding his hand into the older man’s favorite sweatpants, squeezing until marks appeared.

It took less than two minutes for both to lose their clothes. Their lips teased each other, just like their lower regions, rubbing with desire. Singha gripped what fit perfectly in his hand, ready at his own entrance.

“Hmm, so tight.” Thup murmured, his forehead hitting his older brother’s chest as the passage was enveloping his core.

“And do you like it?” Singha asked through gritted teeth, every movement inside sending shivers throughout his body. He could feel the warmth and every sinew inside.

“I’ve always liked it.” They locked eyes, both gleaming with desire as Thup’s core was fully sheathed.

    “Lie down.”

“Like this, I want to hug you.”

    “You are loud.”

    “You’re louder.”

Singha chuckled before leaning down to kiss the mischievous kid who had grown from a pup into a fully grown dog.

    “Don’t faint on me now.”

“I work out with you for moments like this.” The grown dog rested his chin on Singha’s chest, wrapping his arms around him as Singha moved down.

“Deep, ah, damn.” Singha gasped for air as the tightness inside made it hard to breathe, especially when he went all the way down, making Thup’s core hit deep spots, causing his body to tingle.

    “Thup, no, don’t.”

“Don’t what?” Thup’s lips enveloped a nipple, tongue flicking as he watched Singha.

“Your fingers, ah, your fingers!” Singha was almost out of his mind as Thup spread him open, core still inserted, and now fingers too.

“Don’t do it again or don’t stop, you’re gripping me harder now.” Singha looked at Thup before kissing him to channel his overwhelming emotions.

“So intense, ah, it’s so good.”

Emotions are soaring high along with Singha’s thrusts. He’s so ecstatic he’s moaning low, mixed with the sound of his buttocks hitting thighs continuously. Seeing Thup enjoying himself, he’s ready to indulge as much as possible.

“Umm, Phii, ease up a bit, I am gonna…aah.”

“Wait, ah.” Singha slows down, switching to a more leisurely pace, their lips meeting again as neither wants to stop the activities on the bed. “Thup, uh, inside, ah, cum inside.”

“You have to go to work.”

“Faster.” Singha digs his nails into the muscular, beautiful back. “Good boy, ah, deeper.”

“Ah, Phii Singha, you’re too tight, it’s too much.” Thup holds the older man’s waist tightly, his body jerking from the release of love into the older man’s passage. Singha buries his face into Thup’s shoulder, biting down on the white skin to express his climax.

The heavy breathing of the two on the bed is the only sound now, followed by their soft laughter.

    “Sorry for biting so hard.”

    “It’s okay.”

“Let’s go shower, I’ll dress the wound.” Singha looks at the bite mark he made, starting to bleed, but seeing Thup’s face, he finds the boy smiling widely. “Then love me a lot.”

    “I’ll try.”

“You’re so cute.” Singha teases, nipping at the stubborn nose.

“Try?” The broad smile slowly fades into a pout, tears welling up in the beautiful eyes. “Don’t you love me anymore?”

“With you still inside me like this, you’re going to cry?!”

“But, sniff, you didn’t say you love me, you said you’ll try.”

Singha laughs openly before cupping the charming face of his younger boyfriend.

“I’ll try to love you as much as you love me.” Singha kisses the beautiful brown eyes framed with long lashes. No matter how many times he looks, he always loves these eyes. “Understand?”

    “Uh-huh.”

After calming the one who turned back into a puppy again, both went to shower and dress before heading to the crime scene.

    “Hello, Chief.”

    “Hmm, where are we at?”

“Just moved the car and collected evidence a moment ago.” Singha timed it well.

    “What about the deceased?”

“Dr. Say is handling it, it seems like usual.” Initially thought to be an accident.

Singha nodded to his subordinate, then turned to see Thup looking around before stopping in the middle of the road. What the young man sees is a woman in a red skirt dragging the spirit of a middle-aged man across the street.

    “Phii.”

    “Where?”

“In the middle of the road, there’s a teenager wearing red… no, white. Just stained with red blood.” Thup watches the scene quietly before turning to the older man.

“She might have had an accident around here.”

“There’s a case where we haven’t found the perpetrator yet.” Singha speaks after hearing Thup out. “About two meters from here, the body of a teenager was found, killed in the woods. She was assaulted before her throat was slit.”

“No wonder she’s still so vengeful.”

“Forensic evidence found semen in the vagina, leading to the criminal’s capture while escaping. He ran out into the street, got hit by a car, and died on the spot.”

“She might have been searching all along.”

    “The ghost?”

“Yes. She might have been looking for the one who killed her all this time, and she’s still searching. Someone should tell her.” Thup’s wrist was grabbed as he walked away.

    “Where are you going?”

“Over there.” Thup, seeing his friend’s worried face, knew he should be careful if he planned to approach her alone. “I’ll be careful, don’t worry.”

    “If anything happens, call me.”

“I want to kiss your cheek right here.”

“I’ll smack you, there are so many people around.”

Thup laughed brightly before gently patting his lover’s hand and walking towards the traffic island where there were many flowers and offerings, assuming many thought like him.

“Excuse me.” A chill down his spine made Thup choose not to look back but to gently arrange the fallen flowers. “The one who made you not enjoy this beautiful life anymore… He’s gone now, he has received consequences of his actions.”

    ‘I don’t believe it!’

“The police found him to make him face justice, but karma came quicker. He got hit by a car and died right there.” Thup adjusted the offerings back to their original position. “So you should let go and leave peacefully, continuing like this will only create more karma.”

    ‘Hic, my life… my life.’

“I know… the world isn’t fair, is it?”

Meanwhile, Say approached, seeing his friend staring at his young lover’s back.

    “What’s he doing?”

    “Communicating, I guess.”

    “With ghosts again?”

    “Yeah, about the accident.”

    “Wasn’t it because of carelessness?”

“Maybe partly. We don’t really know what happened.”

“Got it.” Say shrugged at his close friend.

“Instead of meddling with me, why don’t you go win back your kid?”

“A bit of discipline might help.” Say glanced at the young intern who had just started working full-time in the department, and the young man walked away without even glancing at him.

    “It’s safe now.”

“But was it worth risking his life by barging into a burning, flooded house for some stupid thing?” Say’s voice grew harsher.

“The stupid thing you’re talking about is the bracelet you gave to your lover, isn’t it?”

“I can buy a hundred more of those.”

“But those hundred won’t mean the same as the one you specifically gave him.” Singha patted his friend’s shoulder to remind him, “Think about it, Say.”

Singha walked over to Thup, who was running back with his usual smile.

    “She’s gone. She left.”

“Want to start a ghost-busting business? Could be a hit.” Singha teased, wiping the sweat from Thup’s forehead.

“Can I open an office in your station?”

    “No way.”

“Can’t use my boyfriend’s connection with the director?” Thup tilted his head, pleadingly. “Sorry, I don’t abuse my relationships.”

“Then…” Thup held his older man’s hand and kissed the ring Singha had recently put on his ring finger on his birthday last year. “Do I need a connection to invite the director for dinner?”

“There’s got to be something in return.” Singha raised an eyebrow at the young man.

“Both my body and heart are all for you.”

    “I’m going to puke, Thup.”

“I know you like it.” The soft laughter of the two teasing each other was a familiar sight for the station officers.

“Wait by the car, it’s hot here, and you’re all red.” Singha suggested a change of topic because the kid in front of him was right. He really did enjoy it when Thup acted this way.

“Okay.” Thup, always obedient as ever.

It’s been said he’s always been Phii Singha’s little puppy.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 3: Doctor vs. Forensic Intern

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 3: Doctor vs. Forensic Intern

“Doctor Say, the chief wants to see you.” The female officer, after much hesitation, finally opened the door to the forensic lab. It wasn’t hard to open, but what was inside made her brace herself before entering. Interrupting the head of the forensic department’s rest was never a good idea.

The young man lying on the sofa slowly pulled the gown off his face, his sharp eyes glancing at the officer at the door before he got up and stretched.

“Be there in a bit.” His voice, usually soft and deep, sounded colder, interrupted during his sleep.

“U-understood.” The female officer quickly left the room and ran to report to her superior.

At this station, there were two people everyone preferred not to encounter. One was Chief Singha, whose mistakes were met with ear-splitting scoldings, and the other was Dr. Say, the head of forensics. Unlike Singha’s yelling, Dr. Say’s calm words and cutting gaze could wound deeply. If Singha was a tiger ready to pounce and tear everything apart, Dr. Say was more like a wolf patiently waiting for his prey to slip before moving in for the kill.

The young doctor yawned all the way, his vibrant red hair clashing with his white shirt and black slacks, a familiar sight. When well-rested, Say was the epitome of quiet composure, but sleep-deprived, he was like a ticking time bomb.

“So, you start your internship today. Dr. Say will oversee and evaluate you.” Singha looked up as someone entered without knocking. “Perfect timing, come in.”

    “Who’s this kid?”

“A forensic intern starting today. Introduce yourself.”

“Hello, Dr. Say. I’m Blue, 29 years old. Please take care of me.”

Say scrutinized the young man again. Around 180 cm tall, jet-black hair, sharp features complementing his honey-toned skin, with keen brown eyes… not bad, seemingly not clumsy.

“We just got a new case. You’ll go with me, Say.”

    “Mm.”

    “What case?”

“A 25-year-old wife went shopping at noon, returned home to find her 55-year-old husband dead in his study, likely from a chronic illness.” The two friends exchanged knowing looks. “But the medication is missing.”

    “Suspecting murder then?”

“The deceased was a billionaire, divorced his former wife, remarried his current wife after just three months of dating.”

    “Meet at the car.”

Say walked out of Singha’s office back to the forensic lab, with a young intern quietly following behind him. [It wasn’t the first time interns had come here, but only a few made it through their training. Say was curious how long this seemingly arrogant kid would last.]

       “Go get the supplies.”

    “Excuse me?”

“I don’t like repeating myself.” Say’s sharp eyes glanced over with a flat tone, causing the young man to halt.

“I’ve been here less than an hour. How am I supposed to know the system or where anything is? Are you going to order me around without any instructions?”

Say didn’t turn to look; he just stopped walking.

“The ones who survive here are those who learn first. Before speaking, have you entered the room?”

The intense gaze swept over Blue, emotionless, sending a chill down his spine, making him unable to retort further.

Blue was always at the top of his class in forensic science, never second-best in any activity or competition. His life was all about studying, studying, and more studying, which left his social skills lacking, including talking to people. He eyed Say’s broad back before pressing his lips together. When he learned he was being sent here, he expected an older, academic, strict supervisor, but Say was the opposite and someone he never expected to meet…

That person was Dr. Say, one of the top forensic pathologists known for handling tough cases, standing nearly 190 cm tall, with striking red hair against the sterile white room, and infamous for his fierceness.

Upon entering the forensic lab, Blue felt an overwhelming sense of discomfort, as if he might not survive this internship. Say’s sharp eyes watched as Blue picked up a bag and equipment from the shelves near the door. Say was right; there was nothing much to prepare when everything was already packed for quick deployment. He just had to retrieve it, it was the first lesson he learned in forensics.

“I’m sorry.” Blue decided to speak up to end the tension.

    “About what?”

“Sorry for arguing with you earlier.” The young man said. Say didn’t respond much, just walked closer until the height difference was palpable to the person standing by the door. His sharp eyes stared until the young man felt breathless, but before he could say anything, a heavy bag hit his chest, landing in his arms.

“Don’t get in the way.” Say said before walking out with a camera in hand, leaving only the young man heaving a sigh of relief.

When they reached the scene, Singha told the officers to leave so the forensic team could work. Darin approached, clapping his friend’s shoulder, pointing backward.

“Is that the new kid Singha took in?”

    “Intern.”

    “Yeah, he’s a looker. He’s like the eye-candy son I never had.”

“Since when did Thup become not-your son?”

“Since the kid came to the station. What’s his name again?”

    “Blue.”

    “You think he’ll make it?”

    “Not sure yet.”

“Take it easy.” Darin patted her friend’s shoulder, whispering, “If this one doesn’t make it, you’re in for some heavy work next time, I won’t come to help.”

“Are you worried about me or looking for the eye-candy?”

“Eye-candy.” Darin laughed softly before snatching the camera from Say to photograph the crime scene.

“Should I start collecting evidence around the area?” Blue asked as he entered the scene.

    “Uh-huh.”

Every move Blue made was under the watchful eyes of the forensic doctor leaning against the door frame, observing everything. Properly equipped with shoe covers, the young man displayed good skills, not missing the gloves as Say had anticipated. Everything went into the bag without needing instructions, but then Blue suddenly stopped, prompting Say to approach.

    “What’s up?”

“There’s a wet mark at the base of the victim’s glass.”

Say leaned down to look at the victim’s tea glass. It wouldn’t be unusual for there to be water droplets around the glass… if it had been cold water. Not hot.

    “Collect it.”

“Yes.” As Blue was collecting the sample, he fumbled, spilling the tea on himself up to his arm, “Oh… sorry, boss.”

    “Put everything down.”

    “Sir?”

“Put it down!” The shout made Blue, who was already worried about getting scolded, even more anxious. Say grabbed him by the collar and forcefully pulled him away from the area. “Rin, make sure you collect the sample and send it to the lab, don’t touch anything else.”

“Sure, sure, let’s go.” Darin had worked with his friend for a long time. She knew both friends well. They wouldn’t scold without reason, but their harsh actions spoke volumes.

The new intern, on his first real fieldwork, had made a mistake, getting dragged out by the collar, only to worry about his error. His mistake wasn’t just contaminating the scene; it could also compromise the case. Once dragged to the chief’s car, Say let go.

    “I’m really sorry—”

    “Take off your shirt.”

    “Sir?”

“I told you I don’t like repeating myself. When I give an order, follow it.”

    “But…”

“Are you going to do it yourself, or do I have to tear it off?”

The seriousness in Say’s demeanor made Blue comply without any room for resistance. His smooth, honey-toned skin came into view. Though not heavily muscled, his physique was well-proportioned.

“Hold out your arm.” This time, there were no questions, no hesitation. Blue extended his arm to his boss, not wanting to cause more trouble. Water from a bottle was poured over his arm down to his hand and repeated until Blue had to ask.

    “What’s in the water?”

“In the housekeeper’s investigation report, she started feeling dizzy, tired, nauseous, and had diarrhea on Sunday. She began experiencing fatigue, chest tightness this morning, and before she died, she had difficulty breathing, then her heart failed.” Blue listened to the now softer voice, a stark contrast to before. The rough hand gently stroked his arm, contradicting his tough demeanor. “What do you think?”

“…Carbamate.” [1] Carbamates, a group of chemicals used as pesticides.

“Good guess. Thought you might go for something else.”

“It’s colorless and can cause heart failure. If someone wanted to kill in a way that looks like an accident related to pre-existing heart conditions, they’d choose this.” After speaking, Blue’s chin was lifted by the rough hand, his red hair contrasting slightly with his fair skin, his dark, intense eyes matching his sharp features.

    “Sit here.”

    “But my work—”

    “I don’t like people arguing.”

“I’m not arg—” Blue stopped when the man raised an eyebrow as if scolding him with a look. “This is my first real job.”

    “And?”

    “And I messed up.”

“Yes, you did. You contaminated the crime scene, damaged vital evidence, and put yourself at risk.”

“I’m sorry, boss.” Blue stood up and bowed sincerely. He wasn’t the type to be overly confident in himself to the point of not listening. He was ready to apologize and correct his mistakes.

“Next time, don’t mess up. Go wait in the car and monitor your symptoms. If anything feels off, call someone.” Say handed Blue his own jacket that was left on Singha’s car for the young man who was sitting there.

“Sure” Not even taking a step back into the crime scene, Say’s shirt was tugged from behind.

    “Hmm”

    “Doctor Say… thank you.”

Say walked back into the crime scene with the close friends watching him with teasing smiles.

“What the hell is this?” Say asked before starting to gather all the evidence again.

“Singha, I heard the dogs around here badmouthing you, dude.” Darin said, raising his voice slightly.

“Bad Mouthing me how?” Singha, who had just returned after questioning the house residents, joined in.

“They said the kid is annoying, how could you stand him?”

“Really? But I just saw the guy who finds kids annoying petting the kid’s arm.”

“OMG, I knew it. My inner shipper still works!”

“Aren’t you guys supposed to be working? If not, get out, you’re in the way.”

“Snort, the maid said every morning the wife would make tea for the deceased, alone in the kitchen, confident that early this month she heard the wife urging the deceased to rewrite his will.”

“If the autopsy matches with this drug, the case is closed.” Say had his subordinates take the body back to the station for further examination, “Rin, go back and recheck the kid’s body too.”

“Why don’t you do it yourself?”

    “Is that my job?”

“Oh, come on, you just want to check thoroughly out of concern, don’t pretend I don’t know Blue is your type, right Singha?” Darin shook her friend’s arm for solidarity.

“Nonsense.” Say shook his head slightly before packing away the evidence from the scene into his bag.

Singha didn’t add anything to Darin’s comments. He just smiled at his friends’ banter; whatever was going to happen would happen. He and Thup were examples of that.

Three weeks passed with the intern Blue joining them. Though they didn’t talk much, it was strange that there was never any awkwardness in the office. Blue was organizing equipment for evidence collection into his bag, having just used it in yesterday’s case. During this, a cold touch on his cheek made him look up.

“Thank you.” Blue’s slender eyes glanced at the person bringing him a cold drink, which he accepted. The scent of menthol cigarettes was another thing Blue was getting used to with this person.

“Where are you going tonight?” Say asked before sprawling on the sofa, “Back to my room.”

“Singha is taking you out for dinner.”

“The chief is buying dinner? For what occasion?”

    “Free time.”

Another thing Blue was getting accustomed to was Say’s concise speech. He wondered how much more economical he could get with words, “Are you inviting me, sir?”

    “And why would I not?”

“Well…” Every time there was a field assignment, if nothing thrilling happened, it was always Blue who got scolded. It was clear that the person currently covering his face with a gown for a nap didn’t like him, “You don’t like me.”

    “What makes you think that?”

“You’re always scolding me, no matter if I’m right or wrong.” Blue immediately bit his lip, having spent the last two weeks in close proximity with Say, which had started to break down their initial barriers. Say removed the gown from his face, stood up to his full height, and walked over to the intern with twinkling eyes, then slowly squatted beside him without breaking eye contact.

    “Uh… I’m sorry.”

“Here, interns never last more than three days.”

    “So… what now?”

“The fact that you’re still here means I’m already very kind.”

“This is your version of kindness?”

    “What do you think?”

    “It’s far from kind.”

Say chuckled in his throat before gently tapping the forehead of the intern in front of him.

    “I’ll try my best.”

“I’ll try to work better so you don’t have to try so hard to be kind.”

“Finish packing, and I’ll see you outside.”

    “Where are we going?”

“Taking the kid out for something to eat.” Blue smiled after the red-haired man walked out of the room.

No, he didn’t think Dr. Say was cruel at all, quite the opposite; his kindness made his heart beat faster once again.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 2: Intelligence Police and Mandatory Doctor

In the chaotic hospital bustling with people, a young doctor who had just left the examination room less than ten minutes ago, hoping for a cup of coffee, was interrupted by his vibrating communication device. He turned to the wall and gently began banging his head against it.

    “Damn it!”

    “Is everything alright, Doctor?”

“Uh… nothing, just fine.” Charn smiled at the nurse before rushing to the recovery ward upstairs where he was needed, though he really wanted to escape back to his condo.

“Were you calling for me?” Charn asked the nurses at the counter.

“Yes, Doctor Charn, sorry to bother you after your shift, but the police are here asking about the patient in room 804.”

“Police?” Charn furrowed his brows slightly before heading to the recovery room he was responsible for.

    “Hello… sir.”

    “Hello, you little smart aleck?”

    “Hold on, see this?”

    “Shirt?”

    “What kind of shirt?”

    “A gown.”

“Correct! This is a gown, this means I’m a doctor.” Charn pointed at himself with pride, “not the kid from that drinking session.”

“I have to work with you?” The intelligence police officer leaned back in his chair, looking utterly despairing.

    “So, what brings you here?”

“The guy lying there is a suspect in a murder case.”

    “For real?!”

“Oh, I’m kidding, he’s actually a cotton candy seller, I just wanted some.”

    “You’re being sarcastic, Khun Merk.”

“Think before you ask, Charn.” Despite being three years apart in age, there was no awkwardness between them, especially not since the night they bonded over drinks, all formalities had vanished. “When will he wake up?”

“Probably in a day or two, he will have a skull fracture but no bleeding, no brain swelling, torn lung, broken ribs, ruptured spleen.” Charn reported the injuries casually before flopping onto the sofa, “Where did he get himself into such a life-threatening mess?”

“He killed a restaurant owner… then got hit by the owner’s son with a car.”

“Well, the case closed then, with a victim, perpetrator, and another perpetrator who was also a victim.”

“Yeah, except there’s another body at the scene that doesn’t seem related at all.” Merk twisted slightly before standing up, “I’ll get someone to keep watch.”

    “Where are you going?”

“What good does knowing do you?”

“Maybe I’ll get a free meal coupon.” Merk rolled his eyes, then glanced at his watch, “Treat me to a meal.”

“A doctor with no money for food?”

“What do you think, being a doctor makes me rich?”

“I’m not free, got to go.”

“If you treat me to a meal, I might help with the case.”

    “Help with what?”

“Like investigating the crime scene, checking on patients, stuff like that.” Chan stood up from the sofa, tilting his head arrogantly.

    “I have a forensic team.”

    “That’s cold, man.”

Merk shook his head slightly and answered his vibrating phone.

    “Yes, boss?”

    [Where are you now?]

“At the hospital, checking on the suspect who just got surgery.”

[Perfect, the body found in the restaurant’s freezer was sent to the hospital. The forensic doctor is about to examine it. You can go listen in or wait for the report.]

“…Sure.” After hanging up, Merk rolled his eyes at the kid who was annoyingly raising his eyebrows, “Doctors eavesdropping on people’s conversations?”

“With how loud you’re talking, I’d have to put my ear in the toilet to not hear you.”

“Come for food, then follow me.”

“No way, too late for that, officer. You saw my late fee, ‘Don’t play hard to get.’”

“First, I know I’m late on my fee. Second, I’m not going into the autopsy room because it’s not delightful.”

“First, it was pointless from the start. Second… scared to death, my mind tells me I don’t have to be sharp, just a small fry.”

“I wasn’t the one starting trouble in the first place. Sorry, officer, go enjoy looking at the corpse alone.”

“Oh, really?” Merk raised an eyebrow before smirking at the kid about to leave, “It’s okay, Dr. Charn, everyone’s scared of ghosts, not everyone’s brave, I get it.”

Merk spoke with full sympathy, but his face was mocking, making the robed man frown deeply.

“Sigh. I should go, I got work to do that some won’t dare, you know, kids will be kids.” Merk walked off, counting in his head. If he couldn’t handle this kid, he’d have stopped hanging out with Darin, Say, and Singha long ago. They were like ten of this kid rolled into one.

    Three.

    Two.

    One.

“Alright!! I’ll go too. I’m almost an adult, why act like a kid! And you’re buying dinner!!”

“Heh, sure, sure, all grown up now.” The one time at a drinking session he accidentally called this kid ‘little one’, he’d nearly died from the outrage. That told him all he needed to know about how to push his buttons.

The two reached the autopsy room, not far from the morgue. Ever since the haunted house incident, Charn, already afraid of ghosts, didn’t suddenly become a ghost-whisperer just because he grew up in a temple. Look at Thup, who sees ghosts regularly yet is scared stiff, completely different!

“You’re walking this close, should I just go in?”

    “Just walk.”

Merk rolled his eyes at the kid behind him. He was genuinely starting to think he’d made a mistake bringing this kid along.

The scent of formaldehyde filled the room, something doctors were used to from their studies, but the sight of a corpse on the autopsy table was still unnerving since he dealt with living people daily.

“Listen, Charn, if you bump into me one more time, I’ll really kick you.” Merk snapped, annoyed by the kid’s incessant clinging, “What kind of doctor are you?”

“A Thai doctor. If it were in English, would I be a French doctor, madamsang?” Wanting to hear the language.

“Annoying.” Merk rolled his eyes for the hundredth time that day since meeting up. He moved closer to examine the mysterious corpse brought from the nearby crime scene, then called the brat over, “Alright, your job, doctor.”

    “I diagnose it as dead.”

“Then I could be a doctor too.” Charn sighed before stepping closer to inspect.

    “Yeah.”

“Still, the forensic team needs to examine it. I treat the living.”

“Where did you find it again?”

“In a freezer at a restaurant.”

    “A restaurant?”

    “Yeah.”

“Can I have the restaurant’s name?”

    “Why?”

“So I know not to eat there. Look at this.” Charn reached for a pointer stick on the table, then pointed at the right arm of the deceased, where some flesh was thinly sliced and removed with precision, “Some flesh here is missing, and this abdominal incision is fresh, probably died two or three days ago, hard to tell being in a freezer, but this kind of wound, looks like something was inserted there.”

    “Don’t tell me…”

“I’ll tell you.” Charn said, pointing a stick that he once used to poke at a corpse towards Merk, “This isn’t just a victim, it looks like it could be raw material too, a surprise.”

“Oh, Charn, will you just shut up!” Merk swung the file in his hand to slap the forensic doctor, who he had forcefully brought along.

“Well, you dragged me into this.”

    Knock, knock, knock.

“Damn it!” Charn, who was laughing heartily at the sight of the police officer nearly vomiting, jumped in surprise at the sudden knock on the door.

“Wow, that scared the bejesus out of me.”

“I mean, I was surprised too.”

“Hello. I am the forensic doctor here to examine the body.”

    “Oh, Dr. Ray.”

    “Hey there, you little troublemaker.”

“My name is Merk.” The newcomer greeted Charn warmly, “And you are…”

“I’m the intelligence officer sent to gather preliminary data.”

    “Just a bit.”

“It’s quite the mess, isn’t it?”

“I guess you might have some doubts about this case.”

“Yes. If the autopsy results match the evidence from the restaurant, we might be able to wrap up the case.”

“Then I’ll get to the examination right away. The lab is already checking the evidence found at the shop.”

“Alright, I’m not in much of a hurry today.”

“How about we grab a coffee after we’re done here to go over the details?”

    “Alright then.” I’ll get to…

“Feeling peckish.” Charn suddenly chimed in, completely oblivious to whatever the conversation was about.

“I think I’ve got muscle strain.”

    “Double standards!”

    “Delusional.”

“Haha, you two seem pretty close. Do you know each other?”

“More like forced to know each other.” Merk replied to the young doctor who probably wasn’t much younger than him. Just over 180 cm tall, about the same height as the kid next to him, but he looked much more composed and mature.

“Where to? You said you were treating us to lunch.”

“Oh, right. Excuse me for a moment, doctor. I’ll be back in about an hour.”

“Just call me Ray. I think we’re about the same age.”

    “Sure thing.”

    “Food!”

Finally, Merk dragged the troublesome kid to a nearby cafe, not far from the hospital. The place had food, drinks, and blessedly, air conditioning.

“What do you want to eat?”

“You yell at me with such a strong voice, but with the doctor, it’s all sweet and gentle.”

“You want me to yell at him the first time we meet? Manners, man.”

“You yelled at me the first time we met.” The kid retorted.

“I must have been possessed.” Merk said, opening the menu to order what he fancied.

“I’ll have the same, but change the water to iced green tea.” Charn smiled at the waiter, then turned to look at Merk with a death glare.

“Oh, but you’re all smiles for the girl, and then you give me that sour face.”

“Your face looks like a butt?”

    “Your butt?”

“What kind of cheeky talk is that?” Charn’s mood brightened as he poked at the constantly frowning man. “You said you weren’t part of the field team.”

    “I am now.”

    “Why?”

“Remember I told you about the villain who killed the restaurant owner and got hit by a car?”

“Yeah, you said it was his son who hit him.”

    “Uh-huh.”

    “And?”

“The person handling the case was standing next to him and also got hit, so I had to take over.”

    “Tough luck, huh?”

    “Indeed.”

“So, that means I’m lucky then.” Charn said, leaning on the table with a grin towards the man across from him, reading documents.

    “What’s that?”

“That I get to see you again.”

Merk glanced up from his papers to the kid who was giving him a meaningful smile.

    “Trying to flirt?”

    “Could be worth a try.”

“Try flirting, or try something else?” Merk put down his papers, mirroring the action by leaning in as well.

“Are you trying or am I trying?”

“I’m not up for it.” Merk said with a half-smile. “Me neither.” Charn retorted playfully.

They stared each other down, neither one backing away, turning this into a significant gamble. The waiter, coming to serve their food, paused as the customers were locked in a betta fish stare-off.

“Uh, excuse me… your food is ready.”

Both Merk and Chran broke eye contact, turning to their meals, shifting the conversation entirely to mundane topics with changed demeanors.

“Yes, boss, I’ll go check on it.”

Charn handed over his shiny silver card to the waiter, noticing the man he was with had been on the phone for a while and had just sipped water, signaling he was done eating.

    “Got some work, huh?”

    “Yeah. Have you paid already?”

“You want me to pay you back?”

    “Nah, thanks for the treat.”

“Actually, I could treat you for life.” Charn teased with a wink. “But, you’d have to die tomorrow.”

“You little rascal.” Merk thought there wouldn’t be much serious talk with this kid. “Looks like I’ll have to get the autopsy results tomorrow; I’ve got business to attend to today.”

    “Tomorrow? Then call me.”

“Planning to return the favor with a meal?”

“Not really. Just don’t want you alone with Ray.”

    “Why not?”

    “He’s got quick hands.”

“And you’ve got a quick mouth.”

“Fast waist, want to give it a try?” Charn raised an eyebrow at the person about to get up. “My waist is quick too. Want to try?” Merk chuckled before standing up fully, showcasing his height. “And the legs too.”

“Can we flirt first and then play rock-paper-scissors on the bed?”

“You’re cursing at me in paragraphs, and now you want to flirt?”

“I like it, I’ve never met someone as snarky as you.”

    “Should I be touched?”

“So, what’s the deal? Can I flirt or not?”

    “If I say no?”

“I’ll keep trying to flirt like this.” Charn stood up following Merk, crossing his arms and looking at the older man.

“Alright, flirt away.” Merk smiled, walking closer to the younger man who wasn’t much shorter, his eyes sparkling as he whispered near Charn’s ear in a softer voice than usual. “As long as you’re on the bottom of the bed.”

Charn laughed softly, turning his face towards Merk until their noses touched.

“I can be on the bottom… if you volunteer to be on top of the bed.”

This battle between the intelligence officer and the young surgeon was grand. No villains. No ghosts. No beliefs, just winners and losers… only in the bedroom war.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 1: The Victim Lures the Unsuspecting

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Special Case File 1: The victim lures the unsuspecting.

“Hmm.” with thick eyebrows knitting together despite not being fully awake, the tight grip around his waist and the heat from behind irritated him out of a pleasant dream.

Singha reluctantly opened his eyes, a low groan in his throat as if he was unwell, making him sit up and turn to look. Thup’s face was pale, his brows furrowed, sweat beading at his temples, the arms around his waist tightened intermittently. Singha reached out to touch Thup’s forehead and neck, finding his body temperature alarmingly hot. He glanced at the bedside clock to see it was six in the morning, the usual wake-up time for the kid beside him.

    “Thup, Thup!”

“Ugh.” The pearly eyelids slowly opened, revealing teary eyes, “Phii Singha, I have a headache.”

The puppy-like whimper made Singha lift his hand to stroke Thup’s soft hair as he moved to rest his head on his elder’s lap, still holding on.

“You’re sick now, told you not to play in the rain.” he said softly.

    “Ugh.”.

“Get up from my thigh quickly, I’ll get you some food and medicine.”

“No, I want to stay with you.”

    “Thup, don’t be stubborn.”

“I am not stubborn.” Singha could only sigh. Normally, the kid on his lap would listen with just one word. But now, both stubborn and arguing, his illness had turned him into a whiny pup.

Singha spent time soothing the person on the bed, stroking his head until Thup fell into a deep sleep. Once sure he was asleep, he gently laid the little pup down before getting up to head downstairs.

Even though he’s not one to cook, just a bowl of porridge shouldn’t be beyond his skill. While waiting for everything to boil in the pot, Singha made a call to his close friend.

[Too early, way too early.] The groggy voice like he’s not fully awake didn’t make Singha feel too guilty.

“Hey, what medicine should a sick person take?”

    [Huh?! You’re sick?]

       “No, it’s Thup.”

    [Is my kid sick?!]

“Yeah, he got caught in the rain yesterday.”

[Just give him some food and medicine, then wipe him down, and let him sleep.]

“Is that all?” Singha grabbed a thermometer, various medicines, and a fever-reducing gel, setting them ready.

[Yeah, but if the fever doesn’t go down and it’s over thirty-nine degrees, you can take him to the doctor, or honestly, just bring him to me.]

“Okay, okay, we’ll see. Thanks a lot.” After hanging up, Singha carried both the porridge and medicine upstairs. Seeing the kid curled up in bed made him feel a pang of sympathy.

Singha sat down by the bed before waking the sick person once more.

“Thup, hey Thup, wake up quick.”

“Mmm…” Thup turned to look at his older brother before slowly sitting up, with Singha helping him lean against the headboard.

“Eat some porridge and take your medicine, then we’ll wipe you down.”

“Have you eaten yet, Phii?” The hoarse voice made Singha gently stroke the young man’s head.

“I’ll eat later. You eat first.”

    “Can you feed me, please?”

“Oh, oh.” Every time Singha encounters those pleading, innocent eyes, he loses completely. The older brother scoops up some piping hot porridge, cools it down by blowing on it, then offers it to the sick person’s mouth, “How is it?”

    “…A bit too salty.”

“Oh, I know, just eat it.” Singha feels like smacking the spoon on the kid in front of him, really wants to, but all he does is lightly pinch his nose.

After feeding him for a while, Thup shakes his head like a puppy, saying he’s full. Singha doesn’t want to argue. He gives the young man his medicine while he goes to fill a basin with water and grabs a small clean cloth.

“Take off your shirt, I’ll wipe you down.”

    “I feel cold.”

    “Just for a moment.”

Thup raises his arms to the sky, waiting for the older man to undress him. His bare upper body comes into view as the white cartoon-patterned T-shirt comes off, revealing glowing white skin and the beautiful muscles he’s trained well, making Singha smile.

The moment the damp cloth touches Thup, he flinches, but looking up at the older man’s face, he just bows his head down, not daring to say anything. The thorough wiping down makes Thup’s face, ears, and body blush.

“Why are you blushing so much?”

    “Well… it’s embarrassing.”

“We have sex every night, is there any part of you I haven’t seen?”

    “I am still embarrassed.”

This shy demeanor, so different from last night in bed, makes Singha want to ravish those innocent cheeks, not seeing this embarrassment when he’s being intimate. After caring for the sick one, Singha goes to shower and change for work, his beautiful eyes following every step of the older man even though he’s been told to lie down.

    “Why aren’t you sleeping yet?”

“Waiting to see you off to work.”

Singha walked over and sat on the bed before gently patting the sick person’s head affectionately.

“At noon, I’ll come back to check on you, so just sleep and don’t get up to do anything. If anything happens, call me, okay?”

    “Yes.”

“Get well soon, you little pup, I’m worried about you.” Singha leaned down to gently kiss the forehead where a fever-reducing gel was placed.

The door opened without a knock, making it obvious who it was. Singha placed the documents on the table after reading for hours until his eyes started to blur.

“Hey, Singha, let’s go eat.” Darin walked in first, followed closely by Say. “How’s Nong Thup doing?”

“I plan to check on him in another half hour.”

“Actually, if he’s not better, you could bring him here. I’ll help watch over him in the room.”

“Hmm.” Singha looked up at Say, who had just gone to sleep on the sofa. Currently, only Say and one assistant were working in the forensic department, so when any case came up, it was just the two of them handling the fieldwork. No wonder his friend was nearly exhausted. “Hey, Say, next month, there’ll be an intern coming to your department. If he passes the evaluation, we’ll let him choose whether to work here or at the institute.”

“Yeah, whatever, just get someone here.” Say replied dismissively before going back to sleep.

“Hey, Rin, could you buy some food for me and a coffee? I’m going to check on Thup first.”

“Sure, since your young boyfriend is sick, you can’t focus on work, huh?” Darin teased, earning a light tap on the forehead from Singha.

In less than twenty minutes, Singha was at the front of his house. He walked inside to find Thup had moved to sleep on the sofa. The young man was curled up under a thick blanket, his pale face regaining a bit more color than earlier that morning. Singha sat close by, gently touching the clear cheek with care. He reached for the remote to lower the air conditioner’s temperature before turning back to look at Thup again.

“Oh, Phii Singha… when did you get back?”

“Just now, why are you sleeping downstairs?”

“I wanted to see you soon.”

“Getting sick makes you clingy, huh, puppy?” Singha looked at the person who moved closer, found him, and then hugged his waist tightly, “Still got a headache? Come on, let’s have Darin take a look.”

“It still hurts.” Thup buried his face into the older man’s stomach, his still high body temperature making Singha worried. “Alright, let’s get in the car. I’ll go prepare some clothes for you.” Thup lingered for a while, wanting to cling to his elder, but eventually got up and walked to the car, carrying his blanket and favorite doll from a fair years ago.

Singha packed Thup’s essentials into the car before driving back to the station, not forgetting to buy some simple lunch for the kid beside him.

The station officers were used to seeing the young man wandering around, as often it was Thup who came to help with their director’s tasks.

“Rin, check on Thup for me.” Singha said as he opened the door to the infirmary, then supported Thup to Darin.

“Oh, poor little Nong Thup of mine, let’s check your temperature, blood pressure, and overall condition first. If it’s serious, I’ll give you an injection and you can rest a bit.”

“Okay.” Singha watched Thup’s back as he carried his doll into the examination room, his expression relaxing. Leaving him alone at home worried him, bringing him here would be easier to manage.

Meanwhile, Singha went to finish the work he had pending so he could take Thup home worry-free. It took nearly four hours. When the pen signed the last letter, Singha put it down on the table and stretched his muscles to relieve the fatigue. He could finally rest, except…

    “Director.”

“Come in.” Singha looked at his subordinate who brought in unwelcome documents.

“Reports from the reconnaissance unit have come in. There will be a transaction at the club today.”

    “What time?”

“The first auction starts at 10 PM.” The person reporting hesitated, making Singha look up, “But our guy inside got sick, rushed to the hospital this morning.”

    “Send someone else.”

    “Who, sir…?”

“Do we only have one officer?”

“Well, there are many, but to get someone good-looking and fit enough to be accepted by that club is tough.”

“Go pick someone and send them. I’ll get ready to infiltrate the auction. Have the team ready to move in for the arrest as soon as I give the word. You can go now.” Singha stood up, organizing documents on his desk before walking over to change into a black shirt, replacing his well-fitted tee.

This time, he would lead the team to bust a human trafficking gang that had been operating under the guise of the club. They had been tracking this for months to pinpoint the auction day inside the club. Finally, they could arrest the club owner red-handed.

It seemed taking the sick kid home would have to wait. After changing, the tanned-skinned man walked back to the nurse’s room to ask Darin to take Thup home.

“Hey, Singha, where are you off to?”

“Emergency work. Can you take Thup home? Is he better?”

“Huh? Thup left about twenty minutes ago. Said he was going to find you, seemed much better, so I didn’t stop him.”

    “Find me?”

“Yeah.” Singha frowned before hurrying outside. “Lieutenant, have you seen Thup?” he asked a subordinate passing by.

    “No.”

“Where did he go?” It took nearly ten minutes to search for the missing kid, until Singha remembered the order he had just given to the new officer. “No way…”

The clamor from inside the downtown club spilled outside. This two-story club had a bar and dance floor on the first floor for nightlife enthusiasts. The second floor catered to VIPs or those seeking privacy for more risqué activities. Only a few knew that past the kitchen wasn’t an exit but a secret red room used for human auctions, not just for pleasure or to indulge dark desires, but for the outright sale of willing and unwilling people for whatever purpose the buyer desired.

“Here’s the last one, just arrived.”

“Looking good, huh, the body’s not bad either, definitely high priced, have you checked the background yet?”

    “All done, just an artist.”

“Okay, okay, take him to get dressed before the event starts.”

Thup was pushed into a large, dimly lit red room. Before this, he had just woken up feeling better than before and hurriedly went to tell the older man. But suddenly, a policeman told him he was suitable for a job, as per the director’s orders, then dragged him to fit various devices and briefed him on the plan. Though he was somewhat confused, seeing that it was the older man’s case, he was ready to help. Besides, it didn’t seem that difficult… or did it?

Amid the twinkling lights in the dark red room, people in elegant attire began to take their seats at the tables. Sharp eyes glanced around without focusing on anything in particular. Strong brandy was poured down his throat to ease the irritation upon learning that today’s informant was someone clueless like this artist.

“Can I sit with you? If you’re not with anyone.”

Singha glanced at the smaller man; that delicate face seemed entirely out of place here, and his hips…

“Please.” The brandy was poured into the glass once more. The invitation was accepted, with the young man sitting squarely on Singha’s sturdy lap, his round buttocks pressing down without pretense.

“Thought I’d bid here, but this spot has much more interesting things.” The fair hand stroked along the chest peeking from the shirt.

    “Interesting to that extent, huh?”

“Yes, I’m interested… so much so that we could do it right now.” said the plump lips teasingly, edging closer to Singha until there was barely a few centimeters left between them.

“Huh, put that cute butt of yours down nicely, the auction is about to start. And I have something important to retrieve.” Singha used his glass to keep some distance before lifting the child from his lap to sit beside him. He admitted to himself that the small person was quite to his liking… if it were before, but now, there’s only one person who can make him feel like he’s in heaven even while still in bed.

“Good morning, honored guests, how has everyone been for the past month? We are very pleased that many of you are still interested and have joined the auction again…” As the host professionally conducted the event, the sharp gaze swept around once more, noticing that the doors were now closed. Guards in black suits began to encircle the area, “Let’s start with the first auction item, shall we?”

When the auction began, the lights in the room dimmed, leaving only a soft glow spotlighting the stage. An iron cage large enough for a person was wheeled out. Inside, a young woman with a graceful figure, dressed in revealing attire, sat crying.

“A poor little girl. She ran away from home and has been at the shelter for only a week. Both her skin and figure are quite appealing, aren’t they? Because of this, the starting bid will be… five hundred thousand baht!!”

    “Six hundred thousand.”

    “Eight hundred and fifty thousand.”

    “Nine hundred thousand.”

The bidding proceeded amidst the excited chatter of the attendees, the effects of alcohol and drugs becoming more pronounced as the night deepened. Not even the person next to him was exempt, hands wandering until Singha rolled his eyes. He could call in the arrest team now, but that would only catch the small fry, the big boss would appear only when the auction concluded, so Singha had to grit his teeth and bear it.

“Let’s go outside.” The sweet voice whispered into the ear of the young policeman, who today played the role of a nightlife enthusiast.

    “I’m busy.”

“Now, for our final piece. For those who’ve gotten a little something, why not try this one too? This item is hot off the press, and surely anyone who sees it will be interested.” said the host as a young man chained at both hands made Singha push away the hand of the child beside him, “Wow, with those gleaming eyes and cheering, it’s going to be a fierce competition. So, we’ll start at… one million baht!!!”

    “One million five hundred thousand.”

    “One million nine hundred thousand.”

    “Two million.”

Thup squinted due to the glaring lights. He could barely see below; his black slacks were unlike any he’d ever worn.

“Two million five.” After being dressed in a blood-red shirt, his hair was styled to expose his forehead.

The bidding and prices grew increasingly fierce, especially as the man in black revealed Thup’s pale, muscular chest. The auction’s price soared.

    “Four million.”

“Ten million! And if anyone touches that kid, they’ll regret it.”

A stern voice amid the crowd caught everyone’s attention, including Thup. He recognized that voice well; a slender hand tried to shield his eyes to see the man below the stage clearly.

“Ten million once, ten million twice…”

“Fifteen million.” Singha, puffing out his cheeks in annoyance, had brought the kid into this mess and now faced further trouble. His sharp eyes noticed the white skin around the wrist cuffs turning red. “Sorry, I just happen to like this one.” said the young tycoon in a crisp white shirt, his smoky gray hair approaching, standing almost as tall as Singha, who looked at Thup with a mocking gaze, escalating the tension.

    “Twenty.”

    “Fifteen million plus twenty baht?”

“Twenty million.” Thup was left agape at his beloved’s extravagance. He hadn’t made that much money in nearly ten years of work.

“What’s this? He’s not even your type.”

“Is he a cockroach under your bed or something, knowing so much?”

    “Twenty-five million.”

    “Thirty million.”

“You don’t look like you have that kind of money.”

The young man’s gaze swept Singha from head to toe.

    “Forty.”

    “You must be crazy.”

    “Fifty.”

“Pfft, this kid isn’t worth that much.”

The other’s defeated stance prompted the auctioneer to begin counting again.

“Fifty million once, fifty million twice… fifty million three times!!! The winner is VIP table fourteen!!” As the officials came to unlock Thup’s handcuffs, Singha immediately reached up to help him off the stage and back to their table.

“Shh, don’t say anything.” Singha whispered, audible only to the two of them.

When they arrived at the table, the previously adorable young man smiled sweetly at Singha again, his delicate hand caressing the tanned, muscular chest before being brushed away by the newcomer.

“Just an auction item, and you dare swat my hand away?” The displeased tone made Singha shield Thup.

“Quiet.” The stern voice caused the young heir to sulk back to his table in frustration.

“How could you let him touch you like that?” Now alone, Thup immediately wrapped his arms around Singha’s waist with a look of dissatisfaction.

“We’re working. Let’s not blow our cover.”

    “I’m jealous.”

“I’m more jealous.” Singha glanced at the sullen boy beside him before taking off his own jacket to drape it over Thup.

“Are you really going to pay that much for me?”

    “Yeah, if I have to.”

    “I’m not worth that much.”

“You’re worth more than that.” Under the table, a pair of hands were clasped together. Despite their stern faces, “All units, get ready. The target is now inside.”

    [Understood.]

“In two minutes, the police will raid this place. Keep your head down.” Singha leaned close to Thup’s ear to whisper, but before pulling away, he planted a light kiss on his earlobe. “You look hot today. Makes me want to drag you to bed.”

“But you said we’re working.” Thup tilted his head towards Singha, his face flushed.

“Still got time to flirt a little.” Singha gently pressed Thup’s head down into his lap, covering him.

    Bang!!!

“This is the police, everyone down on the ground! You are under arrest for human trafficking and illegal business operations!” Police stormed in, though there was resistance, it wasn’t overly violent.

“Stay here.” Seeing someone trying to escape, Singha dashed to intercept, his long, slender leg under his black slacks striking into the fleeing man’s midsection, making him smirk as he glanced back at Thup.

“Yo…you.” The man groaned and collapsed as the cocky kid from earlier was indeed the one facing him.

“Mine. If I say don’t look, you don’t have the right to look. If I say don’t touch, you don’t have the right to touch. Remember that.” Singha handcuffed him before standing to direct his subordinates.

The arrest this time was a success, managing to capture not only the club owner but also dozens of bidders. Tomorrow, when the news breaks, this place will be permanently shut down. Similarly, the victims who were auctioned off will regain their freedom once the legal process is complete.

“Umm… Director, I’m really sorry for using your boyfriend as bait!!!” The words tumbled out so fast they were barely intelligible, prompting a glance around.

“Don’t let there be a next time.” Singha said, leading his boyfriend away from the area. After getting into the car, he drove straight home without a word the entire way. Not out of anger, not out of moodiness, but because he was pondering what to do with the young man beside him.

“Phii Singha, talk to me first.” Singha said, preparing to head upstairs for a shower after a long day, but the younger man grabbed his wrist first.

“I’m going to bed. I’m tired.”

    “Are you mad at me?”

“Shouldn’t I be asking if you’re mad? You’ve been hurt, used for who knows what, and then there were those looks and words.” He had heard the rough words and seen the leering looks directed at Thup, which soured his mood just listening.

“I ain’t mad at all. Plus, I barely saw or heard anything up there.” Thup said, grasping Singha’s irritated face before kissing the bridge of his nose gently. “But I did hear you bid fifty million for me, though you didn’t actually pay.”

“I’m a cop, not a drug dealer. Where would I get that kind of money?”

“But since you won the auction, is there something you want from me?”

Singha looked at Thup’s charming face, not surprised that anyone who saw it would fall for him, with his fair skin and muscular body.

Singha didn’t waste any time. He pushed Thup onto the sofa and straddled him, discarding his black shirt to the side. Their lips met again, more passionately than before. The lingering bitterness of the sour plum in Singha’s mouth seemed to intoxicate Thup as well.

    “You look good today.”

“And other days?” Thup asked coyly, but his hands did the opposite, reaching into Singha’s pants to squeeze his firm buttocks.

“Another day, you look like a good boy.” Singha unbuttoned Thup’s suit, leaning in to kiss along his neck, “But today, it seems like I can really have you.”

Singha wasn’t wrong at all, because the pitch-black hair styled to perfection, the sharpened facial features, the silver earrings, and necklace all matched Thup perfectly, and it was insanely hot in his opinion.

“Thup, you always tell me to take it easy.”

Thup kissed Singha’s chest before slipping his hand into his waistband.

“Then don’t be gentle today, do it as hard as you want.”

“So, should I dress like this every day?” Thup tilted his head, asking while Singha was trying to unbutton his pants while sitting on the floor.

“Don’t even think about it.” Singha used his teeth to unzip, revealing the dark underwear he had bought himself.

“I won’t be able to go to work.” was all he said.

After that, the house turned into a love battlefield, filled with moans and heavy breathing, the sounds of flesh against flesh, and wet kisses echoing throughout the house well into the next morning.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Case File 49: Twenty-six Years of Service

Thup wakes up again with pain all over his body, the sunlight fades into darkness. He sits up, looks at himself, and sighs deeply. The ring he had been saving for months to buy is gone. The gift he was going to give to his older lover is no more. If he were to buy a new one, it would take months to save up again. But if he keeps dwelling on this, it would worry Singha too.

“Sigh” Thup sits dejectedly by the bed before taking a deep breath and smiling to dispel the gloom in his heart.

The young man tries to support himself downstairs to find the older man, but downstairs is just emptiness. His spirits drop even lower, thinking he has angered the older man.

The sound of the door opening catches Thup’s attention, and when he sees Singha entering with many bags in hand, his sadness turns back to joy as before.

    “Why are you down here?”

    “Where did you go, Phii?”

“Went to buy something to eat, my chef is out of commission, what are we going to eat?” Singha said, placing an abundance of food on the dining table, more than enough for one meal. He reached out gently to stroke Thup’s cheek before nudging the young man to sit down.

“I can make something simple to eat.”

“Just eat.” Singha kissed the soft tuft of hair before walking to sit opposite him.

The young inspector watched the boy in front of him take out the food one item at a time, grumbling intermittently as was his nature. Before this, Thup had spent both day and night drawing, without taking a break. At that time, he understood that the kid was probably bored staying at home, not thinking he was trying to save money for something else.

“So, shall we eat, Thup? You’ve been sleeping for so long, I didn’t know if you’d be hungry, or still are.”

“Uh, sit here, I’ll get my own plate.”

After a simple dinner, Thup moved to the living room to open his laptop, preparing to take on more work. He was determined to work more this time to save money quickly, but before he could even log into a page, his screen was closed by someone who had just finished washing the dishes.

    “Let’s talk.”

“Y…yes.” Thup was intimidated by his older man’s serious demeanor. It wasn’t that the previous incident had truly angered Singha, who then sat in the guest seat and held Thup’s hand. He knew the boy wouldn’t talk about the ring, work, or money, so he wouldn’t press him either.

    “Is the wound hurting?”

“Not much anymore. Just a little pain.”

    “Good.”

“Phii Singha… are you angry with me? Angry because I misbehaved?”

    “Not angry.”

“I didn’t really mean to ignore you, didn’t mean to be rude to you, hic.”

“Thup, listen first.” Singha reached out to gently hold the face of the owner of those beautiful, teary eyes, with a look of shock and fear evident, likely from the incidents involving the ring and being hit by a car, which must have shaken Thup quite a bit. They needed some comforting before any more conversation.

“Phii Singha, sniff, I am really sorry.” he continued.

“I’m not mad, I’m not mad, but I’m worried.” Thup sobbed lightly before looking up, facing his older brother. “Rest until you’re better, whatever Thup wants to do, I can wait.”

    “Sniff, really?”.

“Mhm. Don’t pressure yourself, no need to rush if you’re not ready. You haven’t done anything bad, you are still a good kid. No matter how you are, I’ll still love you the same, understand?” the same person said.

Thup’s heart skipped before beating rapidly as if playing drums. Chai lifted his slender hand to hold his older brother’s hand that was cupping his face.

    “Phii, do you love me?”

“Of course, I do! Haven’t I ever told you?” The familiar pronouns returned quickly when the older brother felt something wasn’t right. Thup laughed softly before leaning into the rough but warm hand.

“Never, sniff, you’ve never told me.”

Singha pressed his lips together. Reflecting, he realized he always heard Thup expressing his feelings to him, but he never reciprocated. Not even once. No wonder the kid in front of him felt insecure in this relationship.

“Listen, you little pup, even if you’re snotty, stubborn, or something weird happens, more than seeing a ghost, I still love you, got it? I won’t let you go just because you’re down for a few days, damn it. I’m thirty-five, you know, finding a young boyfriend is hard.”

Thup lunged into a hug as soon as the older man finished speaking, his clear tears absorbed by the broad shoulder, disappearing, and all discomfort was healed as well.

“Stop crying now. Or you’ll have puffy eyes for the merit-making tomorrow.” Singha said, gently rubbing the broad back before planting several kisses on the temple of the child in his embrace. “Shall we go to bed?”

“Yes, I will hug you all night.”

After showering and changing into sleepwear. On the bed that was once empty, now two people lay cuddling under a large blanket.

“Hey, Thup, don’t be naughty.” Singha warned as the kid who was snuggling into his chest began kissing his bare torso.

“Will you go to work tomorrow, Phii?” Thup looked up at his older companion with sparkling eyes.

    “Nope, not working.”

    “Really?”

    “Or maybe I’m just lying.”

“If you have something really urgent, you should go do it. I will be fine.”

“I’ve already taken the day off to come take care of this pup for a day.” Singha stroked Thup’s back gently before slowly closing his eyes. Thup, feeling the steady breath and heartbeat of his companion, also closed his eyes, a small smile forming on Singha’s face.

“Mister pup, you have wrecked everything.”

Early next morning, Thup woke up because the warmth from last night was gone. His pearlescent eyelids opened to reveal brown eyes teasing the sunlight streaming through the curtain gap.

Thup slowly pushed himself up, trying to get out of bed. The wounds all over his body started to sting this morning, causing him to groan softly from the soreness and pain. The young man hobbled to the bedroom door, and upon reaching downstairs, he found three people arguing in the kitchen.

“Singha, you didn’t buy enough stuff.” Darin said while packing food into bags.

    “That’s all there was.”

“Clearly, you don’t go to the temple to make merit often.” Say said before popping a peeled mango into his mouth.

“Say, that’s for the monks!!” Darin slapped Say’s hand hard, followed by a shout.

“Phii Singha.” a voice from the stairs halted the small brawl. “Phii Say, Phii Rin, good morning.”

“Still able to walk, huh? Singha was too gentle.”

“Oh dear, Nong Thup of mine, does it hurt a lot? Look, it’s just scratches.” Darin walked over, approached Thup, and comforted him greatly.

“I’m fine now, thanks. But what are you guys doing here so early?”

“Just messing around.” Singha answered before going over to fix Thup’s hair into place.

“I came to visit you, and since I saw we were going to make merit this morning, I came along to help, because Singha looks more like he’s going to rob a temple than make merit.” said Darin, sticking her tongue out at Singha, who was on the other side of the young man in the middle.

    “Thanks, everyone.”

“Happy birthday, Nong Thup, may your twenty-sixth year be filled with complete happiness.” Darin blessed him before handing over a white gift box.

    “Thank you, Phi Darin.”

“Open it, open it!” Singha helped Thup sit on the sofa before letting him chat with Darin while he himself moved the merit-making items into the car. Inside the gift box were amulets and talismans from both domestic and international sources; some items Thup didn’t even recognize.

“Here’s mine.” Say handed a large bag to Thup before walking back to sit at the same spot.

“Thank you, Phii Say.” Thup opened it carefully, not knowing what was inside, but when he saw the contents, his fair face immediately flushed.

The bag was packed full of various types of condoms. Say raised his eyebrows at him before turning to look at someone who had just walked through the door.

“What are you looking at?” Singha asked his young boyfriend.

“Uh… nothing.” Thup quickly hid everything behind his back. “I’ll go take a shower and change, then, I’ll be right back so we can go to the temple.” He limped upstairs immediately, taking his gifts with him.

“What did you give him to make him blush like that?”

    “Something essential.”

    “Which is?”

“You’ll find out soon, did the officer find what you asked for?”

    “Not yet.”

“And if they don’t find it, what then?”

“We’ll just buy a new one.”

“Singha’s friend is really nice, isn’t he, Say? His young lover lost a ring because it dropped in the drain. He could buy ten new ones, but instead, he hires someone to look for it because he’s worried his lover might overthink.” Darin walks over, puts her arm around Singha’s shoulder, teasing about last night’s events. They got a call in the middle of the night from their friend saying there was an emergency across from the mall. Initially worried about what might happen next, turns out, their friend just wanted help finding a ring, huh!

“And after making merit, where are we going? I’ve already booked a restaurant.”

“You guys go ahead. Thup doesn’t look like he’s in any condition to go anywhere else, I’ll probably take him home.”

“I want to have a party.” Darin leans on Singha’s muscular arm, bored. She has to go back and sulk at the station again.

“Let’s wait until he feels better.”

After waiting for a while because Thup had to be careful with his hand and leg injuries, the four of them finally arrived at a temple not far from home around eleven o’clock.

Singha supported Thup through all the merit-making activities: praying, releasing fish, doing everything for his birthday until they were done.

    “Did you take your medicine?”

    “Yes, I did.”

“Where do you want to go next?” Before they sat down to eat together at the nearby restaurant.

“Normally on my birthday, I just make merit and then go back to my room to work. I’m not sure what else to do. Are you guys bored?”

“Oh, my dear Nong Thup, this year you have rich Singha with you. Whatever you want to do, just do it, darling. His leg hair won’t fall out, peel it if you want to.” Darin said, snuggling into Thup’s shoulder, rubbing back and forth, eliciting laughter from the entire table. [1] leg hair falling means becoming poor

“Thank you, everyone, for being with me today and for all the blessings.” Today, there are people…

“Singha, pass me some tissues, I’m going to cry, my son’s life has been so tough and solitary, so lonely, you know.”

“Go on, Rin, back to work, let them have their romantic moment.” Say stands up from the table, then grabs Darin by the collar to make him stand up too. “Happy birthday, Thup.”

“Singha, take good care of my son!!” Darin shouts as Say drags her out, covering his mouth.

Singha looks at Thup, who is smiling and laughing brightly. Today’s plans for outings and the fancy rooftop restaurant fell apart, but Singha didn’t feel bad about it because the ultimate goal was to see this kid’s smile, and he saw it.

Both returned home in the afternoon. Thup, exhausted due to his injuries making usual activities more strenuous, sits down on the sofa. The cool sensation on his cheek makes Thup open his eyes.

“Want to go upstairs to sleep?”

“No, I’ll just sleep here. I want to stay with you too.”

“I need to go out for a bit.” Thup’s face fell immediately upon hearing that his older brother would go out, today of all days, “I’ll be back soon, just need to get something.”

“Okay.” Singha kisses his forehead, picks up his car and motorcycle keys.

“You could go up, take a shower, and rest. I know you’re tired.”

    “When will you be back?”

“Not long.” The young man sighs, Thup watches the older man’s back until he’s out of sight, feeling a bit disappointed thinking they would spend the entire day together. He gets up again, holding onto the stair railing to go up to the bedroom for a shower, to wash off the stickiness and the heat from his body. Once done, Thup walks to the room across. He opens the door to the room used for storing important things and sits down on the sofa the older man bought for him.

The beautiful pair of eyes looked towards the picture frame in the cabinet, a painting of his mother both from memory and what he had seen. Thup took over a month to complete this painting, and now it resides in this frame. It’s the only thing he has to remember her by.

“Mom, today is Thup’s birthday, your son is now twenty six years old. Thup has a job that he likes. Even though it doesn’t earn much, it’s enough for Thup to live without hardship. Oh, and Phii Singha takes really good care of me, I don’t know what life would be like without him. Did you know, Mom, before, Thup never wanted his birthday to come because it reminded him every time that he never had the chance to thank the person who brought him into the world. But now, Thup doesn’t think like that anymore.” Thup smiled as he looked at his painting, the once wary and lonely eyes now gone, replaced only by eyes filled with remembrance and gratitude. “Thank you, Mom, thank you for giving Thup the chance to open his eyes to this world. Thup loves you, Mom.”

About an hour passed until he fell asleep from exhaustion. Nothing exciting happened.

Thup spent his birthday telling stories as if it were any other ordinary day. Nothing interesting. He didn’t know who to spend time with because he only had himself. He woke up early to make merit, came back to draw in his room, ate a convenience store cake, and went to bed early so the day would pass quickly. For twenty-five years, it was always like that.

    Except this year…

Singha returned home around seven in the evening, expecting to be quick but due to unforeseen events, he had to rush around Bangkok to get what he needed. The completely dark house made him frown. Normally, no matter how late, Thup would leave the lights on.

“Thup, where are you?” Singha put everything down on the table before turning on the lights to brighten up the house. “Or perhaps he’s asleep?”

Singha went upstairs to the bedroom looking for his loved one but found only emptiness. His heart began to tremble until he opened another door and saw the young man curled up on the sofa. It seemed Thup had come to talk to his mom again as usual. Singha crouched down in front of him before waking Thup up.

    “Thup, hey Thup.”

    “Mmm.”

“If you’re going to sleep, go sleep in the room properly, or you’ll end up with a sore back.”

“When did you get back, Phii? Thup didn’t hear anything.”

“Just got back. Are you hungry, or more sleepy?”

“Before my birthday passes, can we have a meal together, maybe watch a movie? I want to spend time with you today.” The still sleepy beautiful eyes made Singha feel affectionate, prompting him to gently peck his cheek.

“There’s something better than eating, get up quickly.”

    “Where are we going?”

“To spend time together.” Singha led Thup by the hand to his rarely used luxury sports car. “Wait in the car, I’ll go get some stuff.”

Thup was puzzled by the older man’s actions but complied and sat in the car as instructed. Not long after, Singha returned with a large bouquet of white lilies and a big bag.

“Take this.” Singha handed the bouquet to Thup and placed the bag in the back seat. “What’s this?” Thup hugged the bouquet with a smile.

“You’ve planned many times. So this time, I won’t think too much and just do it.”

Thup tilted his head at the older man, completely confused by the current situation, until Singha drove out of the neighborhood towards an unfamiliar route.

    “Phii, where are we going?”

“This year, we’re not staying at home for your birthday. No more staying cooped up in the room.”

After about two hours, they arrived at a luxurious hotel on a mountain, under a sky full of stars, with the cool night air and a serene atmosphere accompanied only by the sounds of insects and forest creatures. Singha went to check-in at the hotel before returning to the car. Thup, sitting beside him, bit his lips together. He was excited, happy, confused, and bewildered all at once.

The car moved again to an unknown location, the complex path making Thup look at the older man’s profile with sparkling eyes. Soon, the car that had been moving came to a complete stop in the darkness.

“Phii Singha… I have no idea what we’re about to do.”

“Celebrating a birthday, huh?” Singha got out of the car first, carried some things from the back, and then helped Thup walk through the grass.

In front of Thup was a large tent, with two folding chairs and a table, matching set, but that wasn’t what made his eyes sparkle. It was the view of the intricate mountain ranges under the vast sky and thousands of stars.

“Tonight, we sleep here. I’ve got a deal with the hotel.”

    “Phii…”

“Initially, I planned to take you out for dinner, but you hurt your leg first. When I saw you feeling down about your birthday, I thought it would be better to broaden your horizons.” Singha sat down on the mat he just laid out. Luckily, the wind wasn’t strong today, so setting things up was somewhat manageable. “Come sit here.”

Thup smiled before limping to sit next to his older brother. Despite the slight difficulty, his heart was pounding with excitement. A fragrant lily was placed beside him before Thup hugged Singha full of love.

    “You like it, don’t you?”

“Yes, I love it. It’s the best birthday for me.”

“Happy birthday, Thup. May your increasing age bring more happiness. The past can’t be changed; I couldn’t be there for your childhood or on your previous birthdays or during tough times, but for now and the future, I’ll be with you as long as you want.”

“I don’t want anything from you, Phii Singha, all I need is you.”

“Want to blow out the candles and make a wish?”

    “Is there one?”

“Who do you think I am? It’s me.” Singha pulled away to bring out a big cake, lit the candles with a lighter, and held it in front of Thup, winking. “Go on.”

“I love you, Phii Singha, really loves you a lot.”

    “Is that your wish then?”

“Because I only wanted this much.” Thup gently stroked his older brother’s cheek before blowing out the candles completely.

    “So modest, huh?”

“May I kiss you now, Phii?”

“Not yet.” Singha took out a black velvet box from his coat pocket and offered it to the young man in front of him. “Your old one is lost. Use this one instead.”

Thup tilted his head slightly before accepting and opening it. Inside were two plain silver rings, making Thup’s eyes widen instantly. They looked just like the one he had lost!

“Do you know how hard it was for me to find out which shop and style you bought from?” Before he could finish his sentence, the young man leaped towards the older man, forgetting the pain in his foot. Both fell onto the mat with their lips pressed tightly together, leaving no gap. Thup gently kissed to part the older man’s lips, and once he succeeded, he slipped his tongue inside, savoring the sweetness thoroughly like an expert.

A gentle breeze passed by them as if in celebration, the scent of flowers filling the air, enhancing the special atmosphere of this night many times over. Singha watched the face of the young man above him without looking away. He couldn’t tell whether the stars or Thup’s eyes were more beautiful at that moment.

“Live happily, that’s all I ask.” Singha said, while caressing the clear cheek.

“All of my happiness is you.”

“Same here.” Thup leaned his face into Singha’s hand before taking out one of the rings.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, truly, thank you for everything.”

“I can’t wear it because I have to go work on cases; it might get lost. I will wear this necklace instead.” Singha handed a silver chain to Thup who threaded the ring onto the chain and then put it around the older man’s neck. The young man nodded in understanding.

Singha, watching every move of the person above him, could only bite his lip tightly. Throughout his life, he had never done anything like this. Never. Not even had anyone do this to him. It was no wonder his usually dull heart would beat faster. He picked up the ring from the box and slid it onto the finger of the young man above him, his thick lips kissing the knuckle before looking up to meet his eyes.

“Blessings given. Cake blown. Gifts received. There’s one more thing you probably want.”

“What is it?” Thup asked, kissing his older brother’s neck incessantly, his smile widening as he looked at the necklace and ring on his neck.

    “Another gift.”

Inside a large tent spacious enough for two men to sleep comfortably, Singha was pressing Thup to sit down before straddling his lap and starting to strip off his own clothes until only his tanned, bare body remained, beautiful, just like the young man whose clothes had been removed by his older brother earlier.

“Phii Singha…” Thup’s heart beat faster than if he had jumped off a cliff, because now his older brother was stroking his core with his warm hands, “Ugh, Phii, this, ah, someone might come.”

    “Just focus on me.”

Thup lifted his face to receive the kiss Singha offered, their lips sucking at each other insatiably.

Once Singha was sure the hardened core in his hand was ready, he lifted his knees and pressed himself down onto Thup’s core. Due to rushing out from home, he had neither gel nor condoms to help lubricate, so Singha gritted his teeth against the pain and tightness, similar to Thup who was on the brink of climax just from watching the older man on top.

“Phii Singha, ugh, you’ll hurt yourself.” Thup looked up at the older man with concern, his slender hands tightly gripping the older man’s waist.

“It’s okay.” Singha whispered, resting on Thup’s shoulder, embracing the neck of the boy in front of him tightly, his rear slowly lowering until it engulfed the erect core little by little. The moans beside his ear told Singha that Thup was also struggling to hold back. “Good boy, ah. If you cum, it will be easier.”

At that, Thup’s body jolted immediately, the warmth inside making Singha smirk. The newfound slickness made the passage smoother, allowing Thup’s core to slide in almost fully.

    “Phii Singha…”

    “Do you want your gift?”

Thup looked into the sparkling eyes of his older partner, his face slightly flushed, before deciding to grab Singha’s waist and press down until he was fully inside. The recipient, experiencing a jolt at the right spot, was momentarily paralyzed but wide-eyed from the sudden intensity, as this time, he was the one taking charge.

“I am going to accept this great gift.” The twenty-five-year-old transformed, proudly becoming a twenty-six-year-old wolf.

Thup spread the tan cheeks apart and nibbled at the sensitive bud on the chest, firm and caring. Singha, almost blank-minded from the overwhelming sensation, dug his nails into Thup’s back, leaving long marks. He moved rhythmically, his hips rising and falling with the surge of passion, the sound of flesh against flesh mingling with the sound of passionate kisses. Each time he lowered himself, Thup’s core hit the sweet spot, eliciting an involuntary moan.

“Ah! Right there, Thup, ah, harder, good boy.”

“Do you like it, Phii? Do you like it deep like this?” Thup pressed down on his partner’s waist, ensuring he felt every inch, his soft lips kissing all over the neck and chest affectionately.

“Yes, mmm, just like that, damn good, ah!” Singha was flipped onto the dark bedsheet, his glazed eyes watching his lover in ecstasy. His brown hair in disarray, his body marked with love bites and scratches, feeling the rhythmic thrusts, his feet now pressed against Thup’s chest, driving him nearly insane with desire.

“You’re amazing, Phii, the best, Phii Singha.” Thup thrust his hips, striking the round behind repeatedly, and kissed the sole of his partner’s foot without hesitation.

    “Thup, ah, I’m close.”

“Ready with me, okay?” Singha nodded frantically, not fully comprehending but lost in the rhythm of the thrusts.

Thup lifted his partner’s hips to align perpendicularly with his own, thrusting rapidly, barely allowing a breath. The bedsheet was crumpled under their intensity, but they paid no mind. The tight channel squeezing signaled they were both close to climax.

    “Ugh! Phii Singh”

“Ahhh!” White fluid splattered across the abdomen, as well as inside Singha, where love’s essence began to trickle out.

The sound of both their panting breaths was the only thing audible right now. Before they could even recover from the first round, Singha was flipped onto the bed, and soon, a young dog mounted him from behind.

“Taking a break first?” Singha asked with a hoarse voice.

“Will I still get this gift after midnight?”

Singha chuckled lightly before turning his face to kiss the mischievous young dog, who was almost turning into a wolf. But no matter what Thup turned into… he was still the one holding the leash around this dog’s neck.

“The gift is only for tonight.” Singha whispered, playfully nibbling on a reddened ear. “As for me, you can have me anytime.”

Thup buried his face into Singha’s shoulder to hide his blushing. As they say, no matter how fierce, a pup is still a pup, how could it ever win against its master?

    Final Case Phrase: Case Closed.

‘A distressing incident occurred last night; at 3 AM villagers heard several consecutive gunshots. Upon investigation, the police went there and found six bodies at the scene, all from the same family. The police believe it to be a mass murder, with bullet trajectories indicating that the perpetrator was Pratipat, the head of the family. Villagers mentioned that about two weeks prior, the perpetrator had arguments with his family and exhibited unusual behavior, but no one expected such a tragic event…’

Thup walked towards the television upon hearing the news being broadcast, his brows furrowing as he listened to the report. Something made him feel inexplicably anxious, but the ringing of his phone on the dining table distracted him first.

    “Hello, Phii Singha?”

    [What are you doing?]

“Making lunch, what about you, have you eaten yet?” Thup asked the caller before turning off the TV.

    [Not yet.]

“Why haven’t you eaten yet? Are you that busy with work?”

[Waiting for my baby to bring it.]

       “Huh?”

[Are you free? Come by the station, I need your help with something.]

“For you, I am always free.”

[Heh, after five years, you’re still flirting with me?]

“Flirting with my boyfriend every day is cute.” Thup laughed clearly before walking to pack the food he made into a box. “Then, I’ll bring lunch for you too.”

    [Drive safely, okay?]

After hanging up, Thup prepared everything, turned off the lights in the house, and drove straight to the police station where Singha worked.

Their five-year relationship had been smooth. Thup was happy every day, just like Singha. As he approached his thirties, Singha was moving into his forties. Life changed constantly each year.

The first year, he worked out until now he was almost as built as his partner.

The second year, Singha quit smoking decisively, even though he complained all the time.

The third year, he learned to drive and got his license, so he could drop his partner at work or go shopping by himself.

The fourth year, he saved enough money to take Singha abroad to celebrate his birthday, although ultimately, his partner transferred the money back into his account.

And at the beginning of the fifth year, Singha had just been promoted due to his years of hard work.

But the one thing that never changed was that Thup remained the good kid of Phii Singha and loved his partner more each day.

Thup arrived at the station in less than half an hour. He greeted everyone he knew before heading straight to the office of the station’s director.

    Knock, knock, knock.

“Phii Singha, I am coming in.”

“Come on in.” came the permission. Thup opened the door and entered, smiling at the person sitting at the desk.

“I’ve missed you so much, Phii.” said Thup as he walked in.

“Overdoing it, pup. We’ve only been apart for less than twenty-four hours.” he said, hugging Singha and giving him a big kiss on the cheek.

“It must be because I love you so much, that’s why I miss you a lot.” said Thup making Singha laugh softly before ruffling Thup’s hair like he always does.

“Do you need Thup’s help with something?”

“Today, someone came to report a case of indecent intrusion into their home. The victim saw the culprit’s face but couldn’t catch him because he escaped. We need to bring him in for prosecution, but the sketch artist is on sick leave, and no one else can really handle the program well, and then the drawing skills…” Singha shuffled through a pile of papers to show Thup, revealing a sketch where the face, nose, and mouth were clear but unidentifiable due to the messy lines, making Thup burst into laughter.

“Hahaha, now I get why you called me here.”

“You can eat first; she’ll be back in a bit.”

“Let’s eat together. I brought extra.”

Singha looked at his younger lover, who cheerfully presented the dishes he prepared. He stood up to his full height, leaning over the desk to corner Thup, “Don’t…don’t you like it?”

“I’d rather eat you than the food.” Singha said, immediately kissing the soft lips. They playfully teased each other with their tongues, but before things could escalate, Singha pulled away reluctantly.

    “Full now?”

“Have some food, you’ll get a stomachache otherwise.” Thup kissed the tip of his partner’s nose with a hint of mischief, “And then you can have me for dessert.”

“Who taught you to speak like that?”

    “you, Phii.”

Laughter echoed throughout the once tense office. Singha always thought of Thup like the sun; wherever he went, he brought brightness. And it was truly like that.

Lunchtime was filled with chatter about both everyday matters and today’s encounters. No matter how trivial, Thup was eager to share, and Singha was just as happy to listen. After a simple lunch, the young man led Thup down to the interrogation room to meet the victim in question.

“Hello, Khun Kan. This is the person I mentioned this morning.”

“Hello. My name is Thup.” The introduction of both ended.

“Uh… hello.” They made acquaintances and talked for a bit. Then, Thup began sketching the suspect as described by the woman in front of him.

As he sketched, Thup noticed a dark hand slowly appearing on the shoulder of the unfortunate girl. The young man quickly looked down at the floor, then glanced towards the observation mirror, certain that Singha was watching from behind it.

“Kan, can you tell me… how many times has this happened?”

“This is the first time I’ve seen his face, but there have been two or three times where I felt like I wasn’t alone.”

“Recently, Khun Kan, have you… brought anything new into your home?”

    “Pardon?”

“Have you… brought in any new items or idols recently?” Thup looked up from his sketchbook, through her face, and saw a dark, looming shadow behind her, gradually taking a clear shape.

A large, burly man. Bald, with wide, menacing red eyes, his upper body bare, standing behind the unlucky woman. When Thup looked down at his sketch, he sighed because it was identical. What Kan saw was what Thup was seeing now.

    ‘This isn’t your business.’

Singha noticed his junior’s expression and knew immediately something was off. He instructed the police officer listening in to turn off the cameras and recording devices, then walked back into the interrogation room. As his thick hand touched Thup’s shoulder, the spirit vanished instantly.

“Earlier, Khun Kan, you mentioned that when the intruder entered your house, you were half-asleep, half-awake, right?” Singha asked again in a calm tone.

“Y… Yes, and what you just asked…” The young woman bit her lip slightly before looking up to answer, “I just went to worship… a Ngang.”

Thup immediately nodded in understanding before turning the sketch he drew for her to see.

    “Is this what you saw?”

    “Yes! Yes, it is!!”

“I’ll post a wanted notice and track down the culprit. Give me a moment.” Singha said, leading Thup outside the interrogation room to discuss the events that occurred. The young man recounted what he had encountered in detail, his face filled with concern.

    “What’s a Ngang?”

“It’s a type of Khmer amulet. Some say it’s made from the spirits of those who died violently or from water ghosts; it is used to enhance charm, popularity, and trade. But it’s a lower-tier amulet; with its benefits, there are always drawbacks.”

“Are you saying what she saw was a ghost?”

“What Thup saw matches the description she gave.” Singha sighed resignedly along with Thup.

“Is it going to be dangerous?”

“Thup thinks what she’s encountering isn’t likely to be good.”

“You go ahead and continue discussing how to solve this. I’ll arrange for the police to watch her house, in case there might actually be a human intruder.” As Singha was about to leave, his steps halted, then he turned back, “Can you handle this, are you wearing your amulet?”

“I am wearing it. If anything happens, Thup will run to you first.”

“Good to know.” Singha gently ruffled his soft hair.

When his older lover left, Thup took a deep breath to gather his courage before walking back into the room. The worried look on the young woman’s face made Thup spend some time comforting her before he started explaining things to her.

“I… I didn’t know at all; my friend said it was good, so I just followed along and revered it.”

“I don’t know much either, but I suggest you remove it from your house. Take it to a temple or return it to where it came from.”

“Yes, but… how do you know this?”

“You could call it a special ability, I guess.” Thup smiled at her with a resigned look, then chatted with her a bit more while waiting for the older man to come back and handle the rest of the situation.

Even though he knew why, Singha didn’t take the warning from the unfortunate lightly. He arranged for officers to watch the front of the house in case anything happened or if there was a real human culprit, to prevent any serious harm.

After wrapping up the case, Thup came to sit in the office waiting for Singha. He looked at a framed photo on the desk with a wide smile; it was a picture of him riding on Singha’s back during their first beach trip together. Neither of their faces showed any stress or pressure, only smiles and sparkling eyes. He loved this photo so much he set it as his phone’s background too.

“If there are any updates, let me know, okay, lieutenant?”

    “Understood.”

When Singha walked back into the room, he saw the person waiting on the couch offering him a sweet smile.

    “How did the talk go?”

“I told her as much as he could. The rest is up to her decision.” Singha said as he sat next to him, leaning on Thup’s shoulder and closing his eyes to rest his mind after working all day. The young man knew well how tired the older man was, so he wrapped his arm around his waist and stroked him gently in comfort. “Shall we go home, and I’ll give you a massage?”

“You mean like the night before?”

“Massaging like that, you’ll end up with more pain, you know.” The young man said, planting a kiss on his older lover’s forehead before letting out a soft laugh. Nowadays, he had built up some resistance to the older man’s strength, though he still ultimately lost.

“Hmph, are you going back now, or do you want to go somewhere else?”

“If you’re tired, I can wait to go back with you. Or tomorrow, I can drop you off.” indicating the car would be left there.

“That works then.” Singha said, lying down to rest his head on Thup’s lap to close his eyes for a bit. Lately, he’d been so busy he hadn’t had much time for the owner of the lap.

    “Thup?”

    “Yes?”

“This Christmas, let’s go to England.” Singha said, holding the soft hand to his chest. “Hmm? Do you want to go?”

“Yeah, I haven’t had much time for you lately. A vacation together would be nice.”

“You don’t have to overthink it. Every morning I wake up to see you, every night I get to sleep and hug you. That’s enough for me.” Thup gently stroked the broad chest under the white shirt. Singha took the hand wearing the ring and kissed Thup’s ring finger, as he often did.

“We can go cuddle in bed then. I’ll book the plane tickets now, and I’ll book the hotel with my card.”

“If you really want to go, then I will pay for it.”

“Save your money. Use your boyfriend’s money.” Singha rolled towards Thup, snuggling into his fragrant belly.

“You take good care of your puppy, huh.” Thup chuckled softly, stroking the older man’s head.

“Yeah, right, otherwise it might just switch owners.” The muffled voice from the belly made Thup look down with affection.

“Your puppy isn’t going anywhere; it loves you too much already.”

“Fake puppy.” Singha playfully bit at the cream-colored slacks, where underneath the fabric, something was stirring. He then sat up to straddle Thup’s lap. The young man knew his role, holding the firm buttocks. Their lips seemed magnetically drawn together, but before they could touch, a knock at the door interrupted the intimate moment.

    Knock, knock, knock.

“Who’s there!” Singha asked with a stern voice, different from before. “Excuse me, Chief, I’m here to report that we’ve delivered the victim from the home invasion case.”

    “Then get back to work.”

“But there’s someone who came to report a purse-snatching and assault.”

    “Uh…”

    “I’ll be there soon.”

    “Under… understood.”

Singha stood up to his full height and adjusted the young man’s shirt properly.

“You can wait at the gym since you’re already here.”

“But I didn’t bring any change of clothes.”

“My locker, take some from there.” Singha tossed him a key before walking out to deal with the pending tasks that demanded his attention.

Thup walked to the station’s gym, where previously many events had unfolded. At that time, his legs barely had the strength to stand, his mind fragile, but now he entered with determination, his back straight with no fear left. Thup chuckled softly before heading to unlock the older man’s locker with the key marked with a number.

“Four-two-zero, four-two-zero, where is it?” Thup scanned the numbers until he reached the last cabinet. The young man unlocked it and opened it, but instead of expensive clothes or cluttered items, a bouquet of white roses fell out into his arms. Thup smiled broadly, his fangs showing, his beautiful eyes sparkling with delight, much like the person who was now standing, arms crossed, leaning against the lockers behind him, waiting for this moment.

“You smile at the flowers more than at me.”

Thup turned around to see behind him before walking over to wrap his arms around the older man’s waist, his smile not fading but growing even wider.

    “What’s the occasion for this?”

“Just because. Because you recently saw a ghost without crying.” Singha raised his eyebrows teasingly at Thup. “Very brave.”

“I just realized how much I have grown, thanks to you. Without you, I might still be stuck in old thoughts, hating birthdays, having nightmares, staying cooped up in my room, still a child living in fear.” Thup looked at Singha’s face, his eyes filled with love, respect, and gratitude. “Even though we met in a weird way, I’m really glad to have met you.”

“That scaredy-cat kid in the forest has grown up this much.”

“Back then, you were scared of me too.” Thup puffed his cheeks slightly before tilting his face, allowing his older brother, “You have to give a comforting kiss now.”

“Heh, you devil dog.” Singha said as he locked Thup’s neck and kissed his cheek without holding back, making the younger one laugh out loud.

“Thup loves Phii Singha, you know.”

    “Love you too.”

Both leaned in for a deep kiss, not a fleeting one that’s barely felt, nor one of overwhelming passion, but a kiss full of assurance that from now on, neither would have to face fear alone. Before either would leave this world, they would stay by each other’s side.

The old monk was right; at twenty-five, Thup would face severe trials, nearly losing his life, experiencing loss and pain. But having overcome them, it would be like the sky after rain, filled with warmth waiting for him, and Singha was that warmth and beautiful rainbow in his life.

Singha once thought he’d live alone until death because of what he did to his sister. He was cursed to suffer in solitude, with no one to help. But today, that’s not the case anymore. He understood, let go of his feelings, not just to set Mesa free, but to free himself as well. The help and light in his life weren’t from anyone else but the kid crying in the forest that day, Thup all along.

The sound of desperate crying back then has turned into laughter filled with happiness now.

The sorrow of the past hasn’t disappeared but has eased.

The important person who passed is kept in the heart and memories.

A life that was once lonely and dark now has someone to light the way for each other.

Ancient beliefs from long ago, praying and making vows

To heal sickness and protect our bodies, offering intoxicating gifts in reverence.

When offering to gods or spirits, be cautious, for words can lead to one’s demise, the human heart is hard to fathom, as the dead once said.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Case File 48: The Age of Misfortune

It has been four months since the shocking event that many have encountered. The legal proceedings are progressing as expected, and court appearances are likewise. Thup is no longer involved in this case. Singha, on the other hand, has received praise and recognition for his work, as have the other officers involved in the case.

A warm embrace from behind by Thup, while stirring soup in the pot, brings a smile to his face before he gently strokes the older man’s arm.

“Won’t you sleep a bit more?”

“I need to go sign some documents.” Singha replies with a lazy tone, despite it being his day off, he still has to go in to sign off on an operation to infiltrate a drug smuggling group. All day long with the sweet scent of the kid in front of him! He had planned to snuggle up, “So, why don’t you go take a shower first, Phii, and then come down for breakfast before leaving?”

“I’m so sleepy I could die.” Thup says as he turns off the stove, turning to face the one leaning on his back, rubbing the bare tanned back, then planting a kiss on Singha’s cheek like every morning, “Don’t, my stubble will scratch you.”

“Shall I shave it for you then?”

    “Yeah.”

“Does your back hurt?” Thup slides his hand down to massage the older man’s waist gently.

    “It does.”

“Then why don’t you skip your workout today? After signing the documents, you can come back and rest.”

Singha buries his face into the fragrant neck, twisting to relieve the soreness from the night’s activities.

“What time do you have to deliver the work to the client today?”

    “Noon.”

    “How will you get there?”

“I’ll take a taxi, and stop to buy some household supplies. Do you need anything?” Thup lightly strokes the waist of the person in front of him, his gaze unchanged through the months, as loving as it was on the first day.

“You need to practice driving already.”

    “Why’s that?”

“It’ll be convenient when you go places, plus you’ll need to transport pictures and go shopping. My car isn’t used much, so you might as well use it.”

“I’ll have you teach me then.” Thup said playfully, pulling the older man close before nuzzling into the strong neck marked with faint love bites.

“Go upstairs and wait in the bathroom, I’ll come up to shave you after I clear the table.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Singha ruffled the soft hair until it was a mess before heading upstairs.

He removed his single pair of sweatpants and tossed them into the basket, leaving only his bare muscled body. As Singha was about to grab a towel to wrap around his lower half, he noticed his reflection in the mirror, somewhat risqué.

“How far did that pup bite?”

His inner thigh was covered with kisses and bite marks, more so than other spots. He didn’t know why that kid liked it so much.

    “Phii Singha, I’m coming in.”

“Okay.” The said pup entered with a small face towel over his shoulder. Thup prepared the shaving kit and cream for the older man, all set.

“Are you in a hurry? I’m afraid I might nick your skin.”

“Not really in a hurry.” Singha leaned against the bathroom counter, arms folded, watching his young boyfriend apply cream to his jawline with concentration.

In the medium-sized bathroom, two well-built men stood close, with only the sound of the razor scraping against skin and the squelch of cream filling the space.

    “Phii Singh”

    “Yes?”

“I’m starting to feel shy with you looking at me like that.”

“Didn’t see you being shy on the bed.” Thup paused immediately, taking a deep breath to calm his racing heart; whether before or after becoming boyfriends, he could never handle Singha. “Once you’re done sending the painting, come to the station.”

“Will do.” Thup used a clean cloth to wipe away the cream and stubble, then began shaving the other side of the face.

“Out of cigarettes, buy some on your way.”

“Didn’t you just open a new pack the other day?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“How about cutting down, I am worried.” Here it comes again, that change in pronouns along with the coaxing tone!

“It’s the stress. You know how my job is.”

“I know, but cigarettes aren’t good for your health, I want to be with you for a long time.”

    “Are you cursing me?”

“No, I’m genuinely worried. If you can’t quit, at least cut down for me, consider it as a birthday gift for tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow’s your birthday?” Singha furrowed his brows deeply. He wasn’t one for remembering special dates, even forgetting his own birthday; the only date he remembered well was when Mesa passed away.

“Yes, tomorrow morning I will go to the temple to make merit, will you come with me?” Thup cleaned off the remaining cream and stubble from Singha’s face, checking for smoothness. Seeing the now clean-shaven face, the young man planted a kiss on the sharp jawline.

    “I’ll go.”

“And will you cut down on the cigarettes too?”

Singha rolled his eyes but allowed Thup to nuzzle into his neck freely, “I’ll try.”

Upon hearing the response, Thup looked up and immediately beamed with delight. The young man braced his arms against the bathroom sink counter to cage his older partner in the middle, his beautiful eyes not straying from Singha before he leaned in close until their noses touched.

    “I am worried, you know.”

“Yeah, I know. Stop being clingy; I’ll be late.” Singha said, his neck straight, moving in for a kiss from himself. His tongue gently tasted the soft lips while hooking down the waistband of the sweatpants to reveal a beautiful V-line, the result of months of working out. Singha, while entwining tongues, glanced at his handiwork with a proud smile. The towel once wrapped around his waist was now on the floor. “Buy condoms on your way back.”

“Sure, anything else?” Thup kissed his partner’s cheek once more before stopping, regretfully ending the moment. But if they kept teasing each other, the older man really wouldn’t get to work.

“Buy whatever you want; the card’s with you.”

“But I don’t use it, how can I use your money when I’m living in your house? I’ll pay for it myself.” Thup said, bending down to pick up the towel and gently wrapping it around his partner’s waist again.

    “Use it, your boyfriend’s rich.”

Laughter filled the room, brightening up the gloomy weather.

“I want to help my boyfriend save money.” The young man kissed Singha’s nose, then smiled, “Go shower, I’ll wait downstairs.”

“Wait.” Singha grabbed his younger partner’s shoulder before removing the towel once more. The darkened erect body part was now visible to Thup. “You did this.”

Singha approached closer, reaching to grasp under Thup’s fabric pants, his firm hand massaging gently, transforming what was soft into hard immediately.

    “This part, I’ll handle.”

“But you said we’re out of condoms.”

“I’m about to shower anyway.” Singha pulled at the waistband of the young man, dragging him into the shower cubicle, pushing Thup against the wall. “We don’t need to use one.”

“But that’s not good for your health, you know.”

“I want it now, right now, or you won’t do it?”

“Then let me take it out for you.” Thup pulled his older brother close until their bodies touched with no gap, greedily different from before. Their hot lips met, while Singha’s hands were sliding and pulling at the younger one’s core. The young man himself was kneading the elder man’s buttocks. Long fingers slowly inserted into the warm passage, cautiously because he had recently trimmed his nails, “It’s still soft inside, huh.”

“Ugh. Well, you were at it non-stop last night.” Once again, the straightforward words from the elder made Thup blush all the way to his ears, “Take off your pants, it’s, ah, in the way.”

“Your hand, mmm, is so warm.” Thup let out a soft moan before kissing Singha’s neck to please him, “You sure you can stand it, right?”

    “I can.”

“If you can’t, tell Thup, okay?” Thup withdrew his fingers from the warm passage behind before turning Singha to face the wall. The elder knew to brace himself with both hands and slightly bent over.

Thup gazed at the erotic sight before him with sparkling eyes: the muscular back, beautiful tattoos on tanned skin, the dimples at the waist, and the round buttocks. Everything at that moment enchanted Thup. Instead of penetrating, he knelt down and parted the older man’s cheeks to clearly see the vivid passage.

“Thup, wait! Ah!” Singha twisted to look back, both palms clenching together to release the tingling sensation from the new touch. The young man was licking around the passage before inserting his tongue inside, the moistness and the flickering tongue made him grip the wall tightly, feeling his legs weaken almost to the point of collapse. The more Thup squeezed and kneaded his buttocks, the closer Singha felt to paradise, “Thup, ugh, it’s tingling, ah! Bab, don’t lick.”

Thup paused, then withdrew his tongue, looking up at the older man with gleaming eyes. The new term of endearment made him want to jump for joy. Thup stood up and hugged the older man tightly. Their rapid breathing and the white fluid on the floor indicated how much pleasure Singha had just experienced.

    “Do you like it?”

    “No.”

“Do you like it when I do it for you?”

    “I said no.”

Thup gently nibbled on the older man’s ear before rubbing himself against the trembling buttocks of the man in front of him, causing Thup to hug Singha tighter, afraid he might fall.

    “Call me that again, please.”

“I’m not calling you that anymore. If you’re going to do it, do it quickly.”

“Please call me, please, call me that again.”

“Thup, I’ll be late, just get on with it.” Singha turned his face to see pleading eyes and a pouting face close to tears. “You…”

“That word makes it seem like you’re fond of me. Don’t you think I am cute anymore?”

“Alright, alright, don’t cry!” Singha bit his lip hard, then sighed resignedly. “Baby, are you going to fuck me or what? I’ll be late.”

Like a triggered bomb, Thup’s face turned red all the way down his body, his already tight embrace seemed to tense up even more. Thup pressed his forehead against the broad shoulder before thrusting himself into the tight passage all at once.

“Slow down, a bit slower, ah, it’s too much.”

“Thup loves Phii Singha so much.”

Singha could barely register anything anymore as the kid behind him was thrusting in and out at a faster rhythm. The moans and gasps by his ear only seemed to reignite his passion.

The steamy activity in the bathroom lasted for over half an hour, with both taking turns to climax repeatedly. While Singha and Thup were locked in a passionate kiss, no less intense than their lower bodies, the older man’s hand accidentally brushed against the shower knob, turning it on. Cool water flowed over their bodies, like water dousing flames.

    “Baby, ah, I’m close.”

“Me too, can I cum inside this time?” Thup kissed Singha’s chin before licking the droplets down to his beautiful Adam’s apple.

    “Cum, ugh.”

A warm sensation spread in the belly, similar to the love fluid that spurted out, staining both of their stomachs. Apart from the sound of running water, there was the heavy breathing of the couple for quite a while. Thup still held onto the person, consoling him by stroking his thick waist.

“I’ll take it out for you, and then I’ll give you a bath too.”

“Yeah. You better take responsibility.” Singha glared at the kid in front of him who was still smiling broadly, happily.

“I’ll take responsibility for life.” The young man planted a kiss on the older one’s face, before withdrawing his member and using his fingers to scoop out the fluid he had left inside, then bathed his partner thoroughly.

Singha watched the white t-shirt clad back as it walked away after bathing him. Thup then led him out to sit on the bed before going to prepare work clothes for him, saying he’d warm up the food downstairs. Since they started dating, this kid had hardly asked for anything from him, whether material or not, no demands, no fuss, no excessive jealousy. Thup understood him in almost every way, even noticing when he was tired or in a bad mood. Instead of coming to console or interfere at those times, Thup would just sit beside him quietly until he softened on his own.

He had always been his good boy, usually having breakfast together.

It didn’t take long for Singha to get dressed; it had become routine for them to part ways for their own jobs before meeting again in the evening to eat, do activities together, and go to bed together. Singha’s daily routine had changed so much that even his friends were surprised.

“You sure you don’t want me to drive you?”

“Yes, drive carefully, okay? Let me know when you get there.” The usual pronouns returned when they were outside. Actually, Thup wanted to be clingy all the time but was afraid it might trouble his partner if someone overheard.

“You too. When you get to your client meeting, let me know.”

    “Will do.”

Thup stood waving goodbye to the older man before heading back into the house to call for a ride, along with preparing the finished picture frame to be placed in front of the house. If he gets this sum of money, it’ll be just as planned. He’ll finally get to do what he’s been intending to do.

Singha sat in his office with a large pile of documents. Initially, he thought there would only be a few, expecting to sign them and then head home to sleep, but he’s been signing for over an hour now and still isn’t done, which has made him even more frustrated than before. He walked straight to the smoking area.

“Damn it!” Singha got up and walked out of the office, and out of the corner of his eye, he spotted bright red hair from afar, so he walked over and bumped into him.

“Ouch! Are you that small, Singha? My arm is about to break.”

    “Give me a cigarette.”

    “And you didn’t bring any?”

    “Ran out.”

“Ran out or your boyfriend didn’t let you buy more?” Say squinted at him before handing over a cigarette.

“He told me to cut down.”

“And what are you going to do?”

“Well, he asked for it as his birthday gift tomorrow.”

“Oh, tomorrow is Thup’s birthday?” Say asked as he lit the lighter at the tip of Singha’s cigarette.

“Huh?! Tomorrow is Thup’s birthday?” Darin, appearing from behind, made both turn their heads, moving the cigarette away to keep the smoke from blowing towards her.

    “Yeah.”

“Should we throw a party? Celebrate his birthday.”

    “Thinking about it.”

“And what gift did you give to your younger lover, Singha?”

    “A car.”

    “Isn’t he unable to drive?”

“Well, buy it first, then train him.”

“If I become your wife, can I get a car too?” Darin asked, raising her eyebrows. “No chance, already have a girlfriend.”

“Argh, a mother’s heart aches but is also happy.” Darin pretended to stomp around before all three burst into laughter as old friends do.

Singha’s phone rang just as they were about to discuss Thup’s birthday details, but the birthday boy called first.

    “What’s up, coming back?”

[Phii Singha…] a sobbing voice made Singha drop his cigarette immediately, [I am at the hospital, hic]

“Which hospital, what happened? Where are you, Thup!”

[I got hit by a car.]

Just hearing that, Singha dashed to his car. He headed straight to the hospital Thup mentioned, worried sick, until he reached the emergency department, announced the name of the injured, and once permitted, rushed inside. He searched each bed with a pounding heart, not really believing in bad luck or omens until now.

“Phii Singh.” a familiar voice called, making Singha turn; at the far end bed was a young man in a disheveled state. There was gauze at his eyebrow, the same with his palms, and a soft cast on his right foot.

“Where does it hurt? Who hit you?”

“Just some cuts at the eyebrow and hand, and a torn ankle ligament. It was an old man driving a three-wheeler. He hit me when I was crossing the road.” Singha inspected Thup’s body thoroughly, relieved to see no other serious injuries except for some scrapes. “Sorry for startling you, Phii.”

“As long as it’s not worse than this, it’s okay. The doctor checked everything, right?”

    “Yeah, but…”

    ”What’s wrong?”

”Nothing.” Even though the kid in front of him was smiling, Singha knew well it wasn’t the usual bright smile.

After paying for the treatment and getting the medicine, Singha called for a car to take Thup back home, not forgetting to call Say to update him about Thup’s condition and to ask him to retrieve the motorcycle back to the station.

Upon arriving home, Singha supported Thup upstairs. From the car until they got home, the young man didn’t say a word. He was unusually quiet, which was out of character. Singha arranged the bed before letting Thup sit down. His distracted look made Singha worry because he didn’t know what Thup had encountered.

    ”Thup.”

    ”Yes?”

    ”Is something wrong?”

”I’m fine, I am just tired.”

”Then wipe yourself down before you sleep. You don’t need to cook today.”

    ”Sorry, Phii Singha.”

”Hmm.” Singha fetched a basin of water, wiped off the dirt, and changed his partner’s clothes for him.

After taking care of everything, he let Thup rest as he should. The concern from Thup’s demeanor made Singha call the station again.

    [Hello, inspector.]

       ”Has Lieutenant Mai returned yet?”

[He’s just come back, just now. Anything you need, inspector?]

”Ask if there was an accident today at the front of the xxx mall, a man, about twenty-five, hit by a three-wheeler at the crosswalk. And see if anything else happened.”

[Just a moment.] With a palm resting on his forehead, trying to squeeze into a drain.

Singha sits down on the sofa before leaning back:

    “Into a drain?”

[Yes, they said he dropped something he’d saved up for a long time to buy, and he wouldn’t go with the ambulance until he found it, but the pipe is deep, inspector even you probably won’t find it, they said he was injured too but…. It took a long time to persuade him before he stopped and was taken into the ambulance.]

“Did they say what fell in?”

[Mumbling about it being a ring.]

       Ah, I see.

    “Thanks a lot, sergeant.”

Singha hangs up, grabs his car keys and wallet, then walks out of the house.

       The puppy lost his stuff.

The phone rang incessantly for a while because the owner wouldn’t wake up. Singha furrowed his brows in irritation before flailing his hand around to grab the phone and put it to his ear.

    “Yeah?”

[Took you long enough, I almost sent a patrol to your house.] The yelling from the other end made his tightly closed eyes slowly open.

    “What’s up?”

[Where are you? It’s almost ten. King is waiting for you.] The words from the caller made Singha turn to look at the bedside clock before cursing. [Aren’t you supposed to be at the department?]

       “Yeah, yeah, I’m coming.”

The thick hand hung up the call before sitting up on the bed. The arm around his waist made him turn to look at the kid beside him, who woke up later than usual today. The white skin was covered with love marks, including nail scratches on his back. Looking around the room, it resembled a small battlefield. It was almost three in the morning by the time they slept last night.

Singha lifted Thup’s arm away before getting out of bed and walked to the bathroom to get ready for work. The reflection in the mirror made him chuckle lightly. He had told the kid on the bed not to leave marks on his neck because he had to work, and indeed, there were none there, but from the chest down, there were kiss marks and bites all over, especially on the inner thighs and chest.

Singha took a quick shower; he only had half an hour left to make his appointment. Upon opening the bathroom door, he encountered the mischievous pup who should have been asleep on the bed. Thup was holding a fairground toy in one hand, while the other rubbed his eyes as if still not fully awake.

“Don’t rub, you’ll hurt your eyes.” Singha reached out to stop him. “And why are you up?”

“I woke up to make breakfast for you.”

“No time to eat now. Go back to sleep.”

“I can make a sandwich for you to eat on the way, just for a moment.” Thup leaned in to kiss the older man’s cheek before leaving the room.

It was a new feeling that Singha wasn’t used to. Usually, in past encounters after the pleasurable activities in bed, they would each go their separate ways. Even with King, although they’d together sleep till morning, they’d both head off to work separately. Perhaps it was only this kid who’d greet him and offer to do something for him.

Thup didn’t take long; a fragrant chicken sandwich was soon in a box alongside a cup of coffee. Seeing the older man coming down, he walked over, handing both items with a smile.

“Have a smooth day at work.”

“You look cheerful.” Singha gently ruffled the soft hair. Who would have thought a face so innocent could leave him with a sore waist?

“I’ll wait for you at home.”

“Oh, the card is on the bedside table, take it if you need to buy something.”

“Can I buy more time with you?” Thup pleaded playfully.

“Enough, you rascal.” Thup tilted his head, looking adorable.

“Hahaha, just kidding.” Thup laughed brightly to greet the new day, then went to hug the older man as he wanted to. “Go to work. Tell me what you want for dinner tonight.”

“Hmm.” Singha patted the broad back before walking out to his bike. He chose to use the motorcycle today to navigate through the heavy traffic. Singha glanced back into the house one more time, and what he saw was Thup yawning while starting to clean the house, which was why he wanted to come back home every day.

Singha arrived at the station just in time, the young inspector greeted his subordinates before entering the bustling office.

“Hey, inspector. Why not come tomorrow instead?”

    “Then I’ll go back.”

“Hey, hey, can I joke or what?” Merk hurriedly stopped the man who was about to walk out the door.

    “What’s going on?”

“Um.” King stood up to his full height, his sharp eyes catching a faint red mark under the arm of the man standing at the door.

“Rin, how about the examination results of that damn kid?”

“Like I said, the psychiatric and specialist doctors concluded he has severe mental issues. Plus, the kid has had lupus since birth; the drugs Say found in his room are immunosuppressants. And initially, the doctor thinks his claims of seeing ghosts might be linked to brain and vision issues. So, he might not end up in jail, Singha.” [1] Lupus, or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs, affecting various systems like joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs.

“Or maybe he really does see them.” Say added, “or perhaps Thup should take a look.”

“You just went to the department to submit the case documents for a brief moment, right?”

    “Yep.”

“Then as soon as we get back, head straight to the hospital. We’ll go pick up Thup and wait there.”

“Alright then.” Singha nodded to his two friends before following King out to the car. While getting into the passenger seat, his thick hand was dialing a number on the phone, searching for the saved contact.

[Yes, Phii Singh.] Almost without waiting long, an overly excited voice on the other end made Singha want to strongly hug the person on the line.

    “What are you doing?”

[I’m entering the page to greet the customers. I was thinking about getting back to drawing.]

       “Am I bothering you?”

[Not at all, I was just missing you.] Thup laughed with a clear, cheerful sound.

“Rin and Say will come to pick you up soon.”

    [Huh? Where are we going?]

       “To the hospital.”

    [Is this about Bom?]

       “Yep.”

[And… will you be there too?]

“Yes, we’ll meet there, but it’ll be a while. So, you can keep working for now.”

[Have you eaten a sandwich yet?]

“King, wait a sec, let me grab something first.” As Thup mentioned it, Singha just remembered, so he turned to tell the person next to him who was about to back the car out of the parking spot. He got out of the car and ran back into the station to pick up the sandwich box he left in the office.

[Is Khun King there with you?] The slightly dejected voice from the other end stirred Singha’s affection.

    “Jealous?”

[Don’t make me jealous, Inspector.] The young inspector paused because he thought the person on the other end of the line would be too shy to admit it with such a firm tone.

“Who was on the bed with me last night?”

    [Me.]

“Well, what are you still being jealous about?”

[I am being possessive over who is mine.]

The soft whining made the older brother shake his head with a slight smile at the corner of his mouth. Singha opened the door to the room and saw Say and Darin sitting comfortably as if it were their private lounge, each holding a sandwich, with the box now empty.

    “That’s all for now.”

[Okay, take care at work, Phii.]

Singha hung up before looking at his good friends, stuffing the last sandwich into their mouths.

“Hey, Singha, why are you back? Forgot something?” Darin asked before grabbing a cup of coffee to drink.

    “Yeah, forgot my sandwich.”

    “…In the box?”

    “Yep.”

“Say was the mastermind.” Darin pointed at Say, who was about to make a run for it.

“Such a nice box doesn’t seem to be bought from a store, and someone like you wouldn’t make it yourself…” Say edged towards the door but was blocked by Singha’s arm across the doorway. “Was it Thup?”

    “Yeah.”

“Pretty tasty, huh?” The two best friends exchanged looks before reluctantly smiling, in the morning like this made other officers puzzled about what was going on between the inspector, the station’s physician, and the forensic doctor.

Thup spent the entire morning responding to messages and posting job openings. Even though he had been away from updating everything for a while, seeing the number of people waiting for him made him feel delighted. His notebook was closed before Thup stretched to relax his muscles. The young man cleaned the house and then went upstairs to shower, getting ready to go out, just as a car parked in front of the house with someone calling his name.

“Nong Thup, are you awake yet?”

“If he is not, by your freaking loud mouth, he’d be up by now.”

“Well, I worked late, didn’t I?” Thup smiled at the conversation of the two people at the door.

    “Hello, Phii Rin, Phii Say.”

    “Wow…”

    “Wow.”

Thup tilted his head, not understanding, as the two in front of him looked at him and exclaimed before they both grabbed his arms and pulled him into the house.

“Definitely Singha’s handiwork.” Darin started the conversation first, pulling down Thup’s t-shirt collar slightly. The love bites all over his neck made her eyes light up. “Who else could it be?” Say added, resting his arm on Thup’s shoulder.

“Oh, Nong Thup of mine, did that beast hurt you this much, my child?” Darin leaned on Thup’s shoulder, patting his back comfortingly.

The sound of a pearl-white phone ringing made Darin pull it out from her pocket. Seeing the name of the caller made her instinctively move away from Thup.

“Singha, you dog-hearted man. How could you do this to Nong Thup!”

    [What? Where are you?]

“At home with the little one.”

[You’ve picked up Thup already, right? I’m on my way back.]

“You’re cruel, Singha, I’ll take the kid away from you!”

[Why don’t you ask him if he’ll go?] The kid next to him, with wide eyes, immediately upon hearing this, Darin turned to him.

“Thup, want to stay with me, or with Say? Escape from that cruel person.”

“No way. I’ll stay with Phii Singha.”

    [Heh, clear as day.]

“You’ve left kiss marks all over the kid, Singha.”

[Have you checked under his shirt yet?]

“Why should I?” Darin didn’t let herself wonder for long. She took action, lifting up Thup’s light blue t-shirt to find numerous red marks and bites. Say, who saw this, could only chuckle softly because he already knew where this was heading. “Screaaam, Singha! You’ve hurt the feelings of someone who’s like a mother to me too much!!”

[Tell him to grab a shirt from the closet, one that covers his neck.]

“Nong Thup, Singha says to go get a shirt from his closet, one that covers your neck.”

“Okay.” Thup got up to change his top easily. “So, are you and the kid a couple now? When, where, how?” With only friends he could talk to left, Darin turned on the speakerphone to ask the person on the other end out of curiosity.

“He hasn’t asked yet.” Say interjected.

    [Yeah.]

“Oh! Look at this, you leave marks on him like mosquitoes but haven’t asked him to be your boyfriend.”

    [Do I have to?]

“Of course you do! So if I ask right now what you are to him, can you answer?”

[…] Only silence came back from the other end.

“See? Some things need to be said, Singha.”

[We’ll talk later, see you at the hospital.] After hanging up, Darin looked up at Say sitting beside her.

“What should we do, your friend calls him ‘dog’ this, ‘dog’ that, will he himself be a dog?”

    “Let’s wait and see.”

“Done.” Thup came down in a new black shirt, an expensive brand, definitely belonging to his older brother without a doubt.

Once they were all ready, the three of them went to the prison hospital. On the way, Thup tried not to look around too much because, being a hospital, there are always spirits lingering around. Even wearing a sacred necklace doesn’t mean he won’t see these things. [1] Prison Hospital is a hospital that treats prisoners who are sent from various prisons and correctional facilities.

“Are you okay, Thup?” Darin turned with concern to the boy walking behind him, “Or did you see…”

    “Yes.”

“Oh, I shouldn’t have asked.” Darin said, immediately turning to cling to Say’s arm. Although she seemed cheerful now, she still had nightmares at night, was paranoid, and needed ongoing treatment for PTSD. [1] PTSD, [Post-traumatic Stress Disorder] or the disorder following severe emotional shock, is an emotional condition that occurs after experiencing a traumatic event.

They arrived at the door of the special recovery room where a police officer was stationed. Even though Bom couldn’t walk normally, he was still considered a dangerous suspect who might cause trouble at any moment, necessitating an officer to watch over him.

“Should we wait for Phii Singha first?”

“Let’s do that.” Say replied shortly before serving as a pillar for his friend to cling to as she pleased.

Singha had just arrived at the front of the hospital. As he was about to open the car door, his shoulder was grabbed. He turned his sharp eyes to the person in the driver’s seat and sighed.

    “What?”

“Are you dating that kid now?”

    “Not yet… I guess.”

“Heh, next week I’ll be moving back to the investigation department. We probably won’t see each other much.”

    “So what?”

“I just want us to talk nicely no matter what our status is.”

Singha sighed before returning to sit properly as before, those matters, they’ve broken up quite a while ago. Now, both of them are living separate lives. There isn’t any status between them anymore except for work, from this case King has reported everything as it is. Including both the successes and his own mistakes, so if this could be considered a redemption in the right way, it probably wouldn’t be wrong.

“Yeah. Hope your work goes smoothly. Don’t get scolded by your dad again.”

    “Thanks, Singha.”

    “Are you going down?”

“I’ll follow later, and I need to talk to the front desk officer about bringing Bom to court.”

    “Okay.”

King watched the broad back walk away until out of sight, once upon a time. He had a good relationship with him but overlooked everything. Now that he sees the value, the other no longer sees him in the same light.

Singha walked up to the special room floor and as he was about to turn into the recovery ward, he overheard a conversation at the water dispenser first, and it wouldn’t have been interesting if one of the voices wasn’t familiar to him.

“Do you have to guard here, Phii?”

“Yes. Even though it seems like an easy job, it’s actually quite tough.”

“And like this, will I be able to go back to my old job?”

“I’ll probably have to stay until the suspect can return to prison or go to court, usually.” The deep voice that sounded like it was teasing, Thup, made Singha, who happened to overhear, ruffle his jet-black hair in annoyance, “Your name is Thup, right?”

    “Yes.”

“It’s almost noon, Thup, have you eaten? It’s my break time now.”

    “Uh. I’m not really available.”

    “Are you waiting for someone?”

“Like…” Thup hesitated a bit, not knowing if he should speak his mind.

“Wait, anything else you want to know?” Singha stepped out from around the corner with an annoyed look.

“Inspector Singha!! Good morning.” The young uniformed police officer quickly saluted, “Uh… is this your brother, Inspector? I’ve never seen him before.”

Singha glanced at Thup with an irritated look before turning back to face the officer, who was about his size but had a cunning face that he didn’t like, confirming what Darin had said. If things aren’t clear, it’s best to stay guarded. Plus, how could the pup he raised go to someone else?

“Not a brother… this is my boyfriend.” Not only was the officer in front of him shocked, but Thup was equally taken aback, dropping his juice can onto the ground. Singha bent down to pick it up and then led Thup away by the hand, not forgetting to signal a warning to the officer behind, “Go find someone else to flirt with, Lieutenant. Don’t mess with this one.”

    “Un… understood.”

Thup looked at the broad back of the man in front of him before his gaze fell to the hand that held him. A small smile gradually widened until his fangs showed. Cute. Singha had never talked about their relationship, which he understood, but hearing it like this made him feel touched and overjoyed. He truly belonged to Singha now, and Singha belonged to him.

    “Phii Singha.”

    “What?”

    “Phii Singha.”

“Speak up if you have something to say.” Once they were out of sight, Thup squeezed the hand he was holding, chuckling softly with delight. The young man pulled the older man’s hand towards a restroom they were about to pass. Ignoring the eyes of passersby, the tall youth then lunged into a hug with the older man, unabashed. Thup’s joyful face almost made Singha smile too.

He really was a kid who could smile so brightly.

“It’s real, you know. Not teasing me.”

“Really that happy? Last night you nearly killed me. If we’re not boyfriends, then what are we?”

“Mhm.” Singha gently stroked the soft hair before cupping the charming face, just as Thup hugged his elder’s waist tightly.

“Will you be my boyfriend, little pup?” The eyes of the young man in front of him sparkled brighter than ever, his smile, already bright, was like a sun entering Singha’s dark life.

Or perhaps, they were each other’s suns.

“Thup loves Phii Singha, Thup will be a good lover to you, Phii, won’t be stubborn. Won’t clash. Won’t make you tired, both physically and emotionally. I’ll be the one you’ll find whenever you turn around.”

“I might not get tired emotionally, but physically? You sure? I was pretty tired last night.”

“Well… that was…” The fair face flushed pink once again, “If I turn around, I won’t see you, Thup.” A large hand gently stroked the clear cheek as tenderly as he could, “Because you’re not walking behind. You’ll walk beside me.”

Their lips met to affirm all that had been said. Singha savored Thup’s soft lips, nibbling gently, just as the young man responded to his older lover’s touch, his arms still wrapped tightly around him.

“So, will you be my boyfriend?”

“Yes, I’ll be your good boy, just yours.”

“Then a good boy must open his mouth now.” Singha slipped his tongue in to tease the inside of Thup’s mouth, the sweet taste from the juice Thup had drunk earlier masking the taste of cigarettes in his own mouth. After a long kiss ended, Thup rested against Singha’s neck, giving light kisses like a teething puppy, making his lover need to restrain him before they went too far.

    “Let’s continue at home.”

Say and Darin were sitting and talking in front of the recovery room, waiting for their friend and Thup, who had gone to get drinks, to return. As soon as they saw the reddened face and slightly swollen lips of the young man, both narrowed their eyes at their friend leading the way.

    “Thup.”

“Yes!!” The person whose name was called jolted, instantly acting suspiciously. “Why are you so jumpy? I was just going to ask where the water is.”

    “Well… uh, you see…”

“Didn’t press it. There was no water available.” Singha replied in a flat tone before opening the door to his room as if nothing had happened, then turned to Thup instead.

    “Why is your face red?”

    “Your collar is crumpled.”

“I, uh, Phii Singha…” Thup stuttered before averting his eyes from the scrutinizing gaze of the two in front of him.

    “Or perhaps…”

“Hey, Thup, come here for a second.”

“Phii Sing called, so I better go in.” Thup said, then made a quick dash away.

“Two hundred bucks.” Say held out his hand in front of Darin, giving him a wink. “Damn it! Not even two days.”

“I told you he’d ask for sure.”

“Use the money to pay off that cop too.” Darin placed two red banknotes into Say’s thick palm, not too pleased about it.

“Half each, dude. It was your plan.”

“You hired him to flirt with Thup. And I’ll pay the hospital bill if he gets punched by Singha, so if he doesn’t get hurt, I’m not paying.” Darin stuck out her tongue at Say before running off to another room.

Inside the room, there was a strong smell of medicine and the sound of medical equipment. Bom, now on the bed, hardly resembled the person they once knew. No trace of the old child remained; his skin had turned hard and black, hair and body hair wouldn’t grow back, his body was stiff from scar tissue all over, his eyes slowly rolled to look at the visitor, his lips trembled as he struggled to speak, making him look pitiful. It was pitiable, indeed, but considering his past deeds, this was perhaps one punishment Bom had to endure.

“Pl… please… he… help.” The hoarse, nearly breathless voice made Thup turn away. He looked around the room for any lingering spirits, but found none.

“There’s nothing at all.” Thup said to Singha, who was standing next to him. “So, could it be some psychological issue?” Singha turned to Darin, barely glancing at the person on the bed.

    “It might be.”

“We’ll probably need to consult a fortune teller first. King has gone to talk about court proceedings and confinement with Kan.”

“Yeah, okay, I’ll wait outside then.” Darin said, not being a hard-hearted person. Just working on this case and coming here was already very kind considering what Bom and his father had done to her.

“Let’s go too.” Singha spoke up.

“Yes.” Thup looked at Bom one last time with pleading eyes, which made him sigh. If there were spirits here, he would choose to help by telling Singha to find a monk to chant away the spirits, but there was nothing. He didn’t know how else to help.

As they left the room, Thup felt like he saw something at the bed out of the corner of his eye, but when he looked back through the glass in the door, there was nothing there. It must have been his imagination. With today’s mission over, the four of them left the area, except…

Once they had gone, the previously empty recovery room was filled with dozens of spirits standing around. Spirits with sewn eyes and mouths, spirits still bound by resentment from their unjust deaths. They say when we are ill, our minds are weaker, making it a time when we can sense things we never could before.

       Like now.

Bom couldn’t move without a nurse turning him. Tears rolled down from the corner of his eyes because of what he had to see day and night: each spirit walking up to stomp repeatedly on his chest as if full of vengeance. He lay there, never breathing fully, feeling a tightness in his chest like he was about to die, but all he could do was lie still and watch the spirits repeat their actions.

It was a living hell he could not escape.

It was the karma he had to endure, a life akin to being dead while still alive.

GODDESSBLESSYOUFROMDEATH, Case File 46: Forever… in the First Person

The investigation of the human sacrifice murder case took months, uncovering chilling stories the father and son duo had done. After returning from Sisaket, Singha had to work like crazy repairing the station, healing injured officers, and traveling back and forth for the case. From that day until now, Thup could count how few words they exchanged each day.

The young man stared at his phone screen for a while; his account balance dwindled each day since he hadn’t taken any new jobs since his arrest. Plus, today he had to pay for the room; he’d need to start accepting drawing jobs again soon.

The sound of the door opening pulled Thup’s attention away from his banking app. Today, the older man returned earlier than usual. Normally, Thup would see Singha at dawn and then again after sunset. But today, the older man returned in the afternoon, looking utterly exhausted.

    “You’re back?”

“Yeah.” Singha collapsed onto the sofa, using Thup’s lap as a pillow as usual, “I’m dead tired.”

“Why are you back so early today?”

“Got tired of arguing with that King.”

“Arguing?” Thup looked at his older brother who turned to face his stomach before closing his eyes.

“He wants to reveal the name in court that you’re the son of… never mind, I won’t allow it.” Singha snuggled into Thup’s stomach, the clean scent significantly calming his heated temper.

“If it’s necessary for your case, it’s okay.”

“It’ll be public if announced; it will be on the court record. Even if you’re not involved, others won’t care.” Thup softly stroked the older man’s back while thinking. What Singha said was true; people have different opinions. Some might sympathize with him for facing such a situation, but others might just see him as the son of a murderer. “And what are you doing now?”

“I was about to pay the rent.”

    “Pay the rent? Why?”

    “Well…”

“Get up.” Singha suddenly got up, stretching slightly to relieve his stiffness.

    “Where to?”

“Go pack your stuff from your room, and handle the move-out so you won’t have to pay rent anymore.”

    “Move here?!”

“Choose: move out from the condo, or from the house?”

“You really want me to stay here, Phii?” Thup’s eyes sparkled with joy.

“If I wanted to kick you out, I would’ve done it long ago, wouldn’t I, Thup?” The young man was so happy he couldn’t suppress his smile. He ran to hug the older man, impulsively kissing both cheeks.

    “Thank you.”

“Yeah, yeah, what’s the big deal?” Singha gently ruffled the soft hair before heading out to wait by the car.

Living with Thup wasn’t bad at all. Before, he was used to working late and just sleeping at the station, eating at nearby places, not returning home for weeks. Because even if he did, there was no one there. But now, whenever he finished work, he realized someone was waiting at home. When he drove back, the once dark house had lights on, always left on for him. Every morning there was breakfast waiting before work, and no matter how late he returned, there was always food prepared for him. He only recently realized he wasn’t used to living alone; he was used to having no one.

But now there was someone. Like a big loyal dog waiting for him to come home every time.

Both arrived at Thup’s condo in half an hour. Singha let Thup handle the move-out process with the property management while he himself went up to pack some things. His sharp eyes scanned the room, noting there wasn’t much here. Most of the furniture and appliances belonged to the condo. Although he had some income from painting and selling pictures, Singha guessed it wasn’t enough for lavish spending, especially since living alone meant relying solely on oneself.

“Phii, the management gave us some boxes too.” Thup entered the room with about ten cardboard boxes. “You can sit and wait; I’ll pack myself.”

“You go pack in the bedroom; I’ll handle this area.”

“Okay.” Thup gave a wide smile that closed his eyes, before setting up the boxes for Singha to pack conveniently.

In the small condo room, there was only the sound of moving items back and forth, with occasional conversations but no feeling of awkwardness. After several hours, all the boxes were wheeled outside, ready to be moved. Thup looked at the now-empty room, reminiscent of when he first moved in, and sighed.

“I’ll take these down first then.”

Thup grabbed the older man’s hand. He inhaled deeply to gather courage for what he was about to say next.

“I have saved some money. I don’t know if it’ll cover rent for how many months at your place, but I will work, won’t be a burden to you, I promise.” Thup spoke with a serious tone, his brown eyes showing determination and sincerity.

“Your job is to do whatever you want to do; I never said you’re a burden. I don’t want your money; I can take care of a single pup like you.” Singha gently pinched the tip of the nose of the young man in front of him. “Just don’t be stubborn.”

“I am never stubborn with you.” Thup hugged the older man’s waist, resting his head on the strong neck. “I won’t be stubborn, I promise.”

“Make it real.” Singha said, lightly tapping the thick waist before raising his hand to hug back.

There was no formal declaration, but they knew from now on, they wouldn’t be alone anymore. Because they would have each other.

After bringing stuff back home and storing them in the storage room to organize later, Thup volunteered to cook dinner as a thank you, even though he usually did the cooking anyway.

“What’s up, Lieutenant?” Singha’s voice made Thup turn to look at him, who was sitting on the sofa talking on the phone.

[Inspector, do I really need to find these documents for the ceremony?]

       “Yes, why?”

[Well… can I take them home to work on? The station is eerie.]

Singha walked into the kitchen before leaning on the counter to watch Thup drop meat into the pot. Thup turned to look at his older brother when he heard the conversation, “The priest has already performed the ceremony in the pot. The place has been repaired. What are you afraid of?”

[It’s still scary, especially when I read the news. What if the ghosts are still there?]

Singha paused for a while before sighing, “Do whatever you want, take it wherever, but I need that work by tomorrow evening.”

    [Understood!]

Singha shook his head slightly before ending the call.

“Try this, Phii.” Thup scooped up some sauce, cooled it with a blow, and offered it to the older man.

“Yeah, it’s delicious.” The young man smiled at the compliment, “Anything else?”

“Do you think those two ghosts are still around? After Aisuan died, you haven’t seen them again, right?”

“Yes, those two ghosts were lingering spirits that needed someone to feed them, offer sacrifices, and worship. The abbott was the one who was doing it and now that person is dead. I think they’ve probably gone. Right?”

    “Gone where?”

“I don’t really know.” Thup shook his head lightly; he wasn’t an expert in these matters. He only knew there’s birth, aging, sickness, death, and then dissolution, as the old monk had taught. “Let’s eat,” he said. Dinner proceeded simply as usual. Nothing special, nothing extravagant, just an ordinary day for someone who used to be alone and now has company. At the dinner table, there was chatter, both meaningful and trivial. Lately, it had always been like this, and they both knew there was no need to eat alone on a wide table anymore.

After finishing dinner, Singha went up to take a shower to wash off the day’s stickiness from his body. When he came out of the bathroom, he saw Thup sitting at the end of the bed folding clothes.

    “Go take a shower.”

    “In a moment.”

Singha shrugged before sitting down next to him, rotating his shoulders to relieve the fatigue from running around all day.

    “Hmm.”

“Shall I give you a massage?”

    “Are you tired?”

“That would be nice.” Singha changed to lying face down on the mattress, with just a towel wrapped around his waist.

Thup swallowed hard in his dry throat. Ever since that night’s incident until today, he hadn’t…

    “Are you done?”

“Al…most done.” Thup folded the last piece of clothing before putting them all away in the closet. The young man then sat down on the edge of the bed, his beautiful eyes gazing at the tanned back full of muscles, down to the waist, and the dimples behind the hips, the towel lifting to reveal firm thighs. Thup took a deep breath to calm his heart, which was beating like a drum, before placing his hands on the back and gently stroking along the lines of the muscles.

“Is that all the strength you’ve got?” The deep voice brought Thup back to his senses. He began to apply more pressure, massaging from the shoulders down to the back muscles, earnestly following the muscle lines until he heard a satisfied groan from his older brother’s throat.

“Have you heard any news about… Bom?” Thup tried to find something to talk about, to keep himself from staring too much at the older man’s backside.

“He’s already been detained at the court. Can’t walk, can’t move because the skin is deformed. I heard he’s been screaming about seeing ghosts.”

    “Huh? Seeing ghosts?”

“Yeah, around 3 AM, he would scream in the room before going quiet around 5 AM, then he just zones out all day.” Singha felt a soft hand sliding down to his waist, “A bit harder.”

“Should I go check for you?”

    “Not scared anymore?”

“Well, I am scared… but you’ll be with me, right?”

“You’ve got your sacred necklace now.” Singha chuckled in his throat before turning to look at the kid sitting beside him.

Thup made a pouty face before grabbing a blanket to cover the older man’s lower body because the towel had ridden up quite a bit, “With you here, it’s better, isn’t it?”

    “Come here.”

Thup leaned in easily, his loose T-shirt collar was tugged by Singha until their noses touched.

“I’ve got to go to work at ten tomorrow.”

“Tha… that’s great, you’ll get to rest a lot.” Thup avoided the older man’s gaze, looking towards the headboard.

“Before you speak, maybe check where your hand is.”

Thup looked down, following his gaze, and saw his hand was on the older man’s lower abdomen, if it went a bit lower, it would touch something else.

Thup looked up into Singha’s eyes before moving to hug the older man’s waist. He was losing to Singha in every way.

    “Can I kiss you?”

“Can’t.” As soon as he got the answer, his beautiful eyes dimmed, Thup pouted slightly before resting his head on the shoulder, his beautiful hand unknowingly moved from the waist down to the hip, “But I didn’t say you can’t.”

Thup lifted his head immediately, grinning at the older man, then lunged at Singha, pinning him down on the bed, his full lips pressed against Singha’s, sucking gently with care because the person beneath allowed him to slip his tongue in, seeking sweetness. The first time they kissed, Thup only remembered a bitter taste, but this time he tasted the cool mint at the tip of his tongue, Thup savored the older man’s lips unhurriedly, but then found himself flipped onto the bed with Singha now on top.

“Take off your shirt.” Thup complied easily by removing his t-shirt and tossing it beside the bed, “Looks better now.”

His fair face flushed at the compliment. Throughout the month, he spent time at home, apart from cleaning, drawing, and with all the muscle he had, he dedicated himself to a bit of exercise, which started to firm up until you could see a decent set of abs. His efforts were not in vain!

“You get excited quickly about this kind of thing, huh?” Singha teased, feeling something pressing against his backside.

“Phii.” Thup said in a pleading tone, gently stroking the older man’s waist.

“Begging like this, what do you want?” Singha leaned down to kiss his fragrant neck, like a newborn puppy, a scent he had grown most accustomed to over the past months. His thick lips nibbled and kissed until Thup inadvertently scratched lightly on his tanned back. “Let me see how far what you’ve been watching has developed.”

“You saw!?” Thup jolted when he heard the sentence from the person busy with his chest.

“You left it open.” His smooth cheeks turned red up to his ears when caught looking up things on the computer, “How to prepare, how to make your partner feel good, seems like there was how to put on a condom too.”

“Phii… don’t say it.” Thup raised his hands to cover his blushing face, feeling even more embarrassed hearing it from the older man like this.

Singha chuckled in his throat before leaning in to kiss Thup’s hand. He got up and walked toward the dressing room before returning to stand beside the bed again. The white skin of the boy sitting on the bed turned redder, making him even more teasing-worthy. It wasn’t strange for him to have intimate relations with someone, but with a young man who hadn’t even had his first kiss, it was no surprise he’d turn to the internet for information.

The young inspector removed his towel, leaving just his enticing bare body. Thup stared, wide-eyed, then moved to the edge of the bed and looked up at Singha.

“If I die, it’s your fault.” The young man lamented because it felt like his heart could stop any moment. Singha reached out to hold Thup’s chin, leaning his face down until their noses nearly touched the blushing cheeks.

“If you do it poorly…” Thup swallowed hard as he saw dozens of condoms thrown onto the bed, “Next time, I’ll do it myself.”

The fair-faced Thup scanned downwards to the thick chest, the rippled abs, beautiful, down to the perfectly sized manhood. He swallowed hard again before reaching out to gently stroke it. Every part of the person in front of him looked beautiful and worth exploring. He could barely keep his composure.

Singha watched the young man move his face to kiss his hip, tracing along, following the V-line until reaching the now erect manhood. As Thup enveloped it with his lips, Singha clenched his jaw. The warm, moist mouth, though not yet skilled, was not bad at all, “Mmm, good boy, watch your teeth.” Singha said, stroking the soft hair that had grown longer. He looked at the blushing cheeks and the lips that gently held his core with gleaming eyes.

Thup tried to take in as much as he could, his slender hands gripping the hips while kneading the buttocks, lost in the moment.

“Ah, use your tongue too.” The young man looked up before starting to use his tongue, swirling around the hot core. Hearing satisfied moans made him even happier, “Damn, so good.” Singha exclaimed.

The rising passion made raw instincts kick in; he pressed Thup’s head down, thrusting deep into the warm mouth, hips moving back and forth. Soon, thick white fluid burst into Thup’s mouth, almost choking him, “Cough, cough… bro. Cough, cough.”

“Sorry, sorry, I’ll get-” Thup grabbed his hand, pulling him back to lie on the bed, then straddled him, “I was going to get your water.”

“It’s okay.” Thup’s reddened nose made Singha reach out to playfully squeeze it, “Did you like it?”

    “It was good.”

“Just good, huh…” The slightly pouting face with pleading eyes made Singha pull his white neck closer.

“Next time, we’ll do it again.”

    “Yes.”

Both lips meet once again, tongues entwining endlessly in playful teasing. Singha spread his legs apart to allow the younger man to come closer. Now, there was hardly any part of them that wasn’t touching. Thup moved to kiss the older man’s cheek before sliding down to his sturdy neck.

“Can I kiss here?” Thup lightly pecked the neck to indicate the spot, his hand now caressing the firm buttocks of the older man.

    “No, not there either.”

“How about here then?” Thup shifted to kiss the middle of the chest before dragging his tongue to a dark colored nipple. “And here, can I kiss here?”

“Ah, yes, but where are your hands going?” Singha felt fingers pressing against his rear entrance. “Grab the gel from the bedside table first.”

“I will have to move away from you then.” he replied.

Thup released the nipple from his attention, setting it free before replying.

“You can’t do it without it. Don’t be stubborn!” The young man immediately went to fetch the gel when scolded. “Yeah, open it and squeeze it onto your fingers.”

“And then what?” Thup returned to peppering kisses across the chest, his gel-covered fingers returning to explore the older man’s intimate pathway.

“Try inserting it.” Singha said, pulling Thup’s face up for another kiss. Although it wasn’t his first time, he had been celibate for so long that rushing would spoil the fun.

Thup had beautiful hands; his long, slender fingers were admired by many for a long time. He always thought they were only good for that much, but who knew they’d be beneficial in bedroom matters too? The first two fingers slowly entered the tight passage, every movement constricted tightly, allowing Thup to feel everything inside, accompanied by soft moans from the one he was kissing. This made Thup open his eyes to look. He saw the senior’s furrowed brows, unsure if he was doing it right.

“Am I doing it right, Phii?”

“Deeper, go deeper.” Singha panted, looking down at himself, feeling the fingers slowly push inside, making him moan softly in his throat until… “Ahhh! There, right there.”

“Here, right?” Thup pressed again at the same spot, seeing the older man’s body jerk, he started pressing repeatedly as he had read this was likely a sensitive spot that would bring immense pleasure to his partner. “Does it feel good, Phii? Does it feel good?”

Singha looked up and gave a challenging smile. He wrapped his arms around Thup’s neck and teasingly licked the tip of his chin.

“It would feel better if you took your fingers out… and replaced them with something else.”

“Will… will it hurt you, Phii?”

“Getting stabbed with steel didn’t kill me, you think you can do worse?” The double entendre made Thup blush and bury his face into the shoulder.

He’s really strong, just like Phii Say said.

Thup withdrew his fingers and sat up, looking at the older man with sparkling eyes. His small heart was beating wildly, especially when their eyes met, those beautiful night-colored eyes, he was falling, falling so hard for the person in front of him. “If it hurts, tell Thup, okay? I will stop, won’t do it anymore.”

“With how hard you are, you won’t do it?” Singha used his toes to stroke the firm, colored shaft, causing the young man to moan immediately.

“Ah, no… not if you’re in pain.”

“Heh, I doubt I’ll cry out from pain, more likely from something else.” The long legs spread apart, urging the young man in front of him to stop being hesitant.

Thup bit his lip to prevent a foolish smile from escaping. He stood up, grabbed a condom, carefully tore it open, and slid it onto his aching, almost exploding body. Thup positioned himself between the older man’s legs, his heart pounding loudly. If he did something wrong, he didn’t know if he’d be scolded or abandoned, and if he was abandoned, would he be left entirely?

“Phii Singha… you won’t leave me, will you?”

Singha looked at the boy above him, looking almost like he might cry out of pity, yet below, he was poised to enter him.

“Come down here.” Singha beckoned with his finger for the young man to come closer, his thick hands cradling the clear face before biting softly on the stubborn nose tip. “Why would I leave you?”

“If one day… if one day you get bored of me?”

“Do I seem like that kind of person?” Thup shook his head vigorously, his hair bouncing. “I wouldn’t leave you just because you’re not good at it, Thup. We haven’t even started yet.”

Thup affectionately nuzzled the older man’s cheek with a big kiss before enveloping him in a loving embrace. The young man seemed to gain confidence from this good energy. He rubbed his shaft against the back passage of the man beneath him, looking at it before slowly pushing inside, not in a rush. The tightness made him clench his jaw so hard that veins appeared on his jawline, sweat beading at his temples and down his back. He could barely restrain himself, wanting to thrust wildly but feared the older man might feel pain; it felt so good that…

Singha watched as Thup inserted himself, the tightness in his belly coming with a tingling pleasure, making him grip the bed sheet tightly. He bit his lip to keep from crying out, afraid of startling Thup.

The young man looked up at the older man, smiling when he was fully inside. Thup leaned down to hug Singha, their lower bodies still joined.

“Very good, pup.” Singha patted Thup’s head gently before taking a deep breath. “Now, you can move.”

“You’re everything to me, Phii Singha.” Thup said before kissing the sharp jawline. He straightened up, pulling Singha’s legs over his shoulders.

The pale hips began to move with a slow rhythm, thrusting his shaft fully in and out, creating friction inside. Thup held onto the legs firmly before letting his emotions guide him. His full lips kissed and sucked on Singha’s calf in devotion before starting to thrust with faster and stronger movements.

“Deeper, ah, deeper Thup.” It didn’t take long for any pain to vanish, leaving only the pleasure that made him smile as he watched his pup grow today. “Ugh, good boy, ah, harder.”

Thup was never used to the older man’s hot words. He always blushed when hearing them, yet he loved it so much. The young man increased the force of his thrusts as requested, leaning down to suck on Singha’s firm chest. The more the long legs were pushed back against the chest, the more the back passage was positioned perfectly for his shaft to hammer into.

Singha wraps his arms around the neck of the person on top, releasing his emotions onto the smooth white back. No need to think about how red the marks will be tomorrow morning. Each thrust hits the spot, making him bite down hard.

“I love your voice, please call my name again, Phii.” The young man pleads, even though his lower half shows no mercy. Soft lips kiss and nibble at Singha’s lips before moving all over his face.

“Thup, ah, good boy, ah, very good.” All the praise from Singha’s mouth seems to fuel the young man on top, growing from a pup into a full-grown dog. Thup thrusts upwards before leaning down to lick the chest of the person below.

    “Phii, ah, I am close.”

“Faster, ah.” Singha barely hears anything now. His mind goes blank, white. He looks up at the young man on top, cups his face, and kisses the flushed pink cheeks before whispering in his ear, “Finish inside.”

“Ahh!!!” Thup climaxes immediately upon hearing this, as does Singha, feeling the warmth inside despite wearing protection. Not long after, he too reaches his peak, leaving love stains on both their stomachs.

Breaths heave throughout the room, the bed looking like it’s just been through a battlefield. Thup withdraws and collapses onto Singha’s chest, listening to the strong heartbeat. The young man looks up, resting on the chest, and smiles broadly at his elder.

    “Did you like it, Phii?”

    “Like what?”

“Like me.” Thup’s words make Singha lift his head to look before lying back down.

“Hmph. If I didn’t like it, would you be lying on my chest like this?” Thup buries his face into Singha’s chest, making puppy-like sounds of contentment, prompting Singha to gently stroke his head.

“Tomorrow, you said you have work at ten, right?”

    “Mhm.”

“Must we use all of these?” Thup stood up, grabbing a bag of condoms that hadn’t yet fallen beside the bed.

“What do you think?” Singha got up too, looking at his body covered in love marks from the young pup in front of him, the young inspector squinted, his eyes gleaming with mischief before he chuckled in his throat. “I’ll be back, just need a smoke first.”

Singha got up to grab a cigarette from the table, but before he could leave the room, the young pup approached from behind, embracing him.

“Phii… it’s bitter.” Thup kissed the back of his neck before resting his face on his shoulder.

Singha pushed his tongue against his cheek, then roughly brushed back his messy hair. He took the cigarette out of his mouth and dropped it on the floor, then turned to face the kid behind him.

“Not smoking that damn cigarette anymore. I’ll smoke you instead.”

Thup laughed brightly, following Singha back to the bed. The young man was thrown onto it, with Singha straddling him once again, rubbing against his tanned buttocks until his arousal began to harden.

“Switching to smoking me… is good, healthier too.”

Singha lightly tapped his forehead with the back of his hand, followed by a deep kiss to distract from the cigarette he just tossed away. He’d remember that in bed… this kid wasn’t just a pup anymore.

After getting plenty of food and stuffed toys, they agreed it was time to head home. Thup hugged the stuffed toy in his arms with a smile on his face.

    “Go inside first.”

“Aren’t you coming in with me, Phii?”

“I’ll have a cigarette.” Thup nodded and walked into the house.

Singha took a cigarette, lit it, and as the white smoke floated up into the air, the young inspector sighed before dialing a number he hadn’t saved.

    [What’s up?]

“I’ll come to pick up the case documents tomorrow. I’ll be back in a day or two.”

[Hmm, anything else you want to talk about?]

       “No.”

    [So, is this the end?]

Singha inhaled nicotine into his lungs before hanging up the call. His sharp eyes lifted to gaze at the night sky, where the full moon lit up the entire expanse, along with the stars that twinkle brightly. The events that had passed made him see more than what he used to. Every story, every belief had its reasons and origins. If he had chosen not to listen to Thup that day and just arrested him, putting an end to it by sending him to jail, these terrible stories would probably still continue, along with the false beliefs and the taking of lives.

Singha spent a good while outside thinking about random things before returning inside the house. The scene in front of him caused his brows to knit together tightly. Uncle Chai was being dragged back to his room by Auntie Noi; Merk and Charn, one hugging a wine cask and the other an ice bucket; Darin asleep with her feet resting on Say’s chest, who had been there who knows since when. But what puzzled him the most was the young man who had arrived less than an hour ago, one hand hugging a doll, the other holding an empty glass.

“What the heck is this?” Singha muttered before walking closer to inspect the condition of each person, which could roughly be guessed by the scattered liquor bottles around them, “Thup…”

“Phii… I’m so hot.” It seemed the empty glass he was holding once contained strong liquor.

“Who tricked you this time?” Thup pointed towards Merk and Charn, now passed out.

“How many glasses did you drink?”

Thup put down his glass and raised his index finger in front of Singha, slowly followed by his middle, ring, and little fingers before it all…

“Young man, let them all sleep it off. I’ll go close the house door and sleep too. We’ll clean up their mess in the morning. Go to bed, son.” Auntie Noi said as she walked out with the keys to lock the house.

    “Hot.”

“If you’re hot, go take a shower.”

“Phii… are you hot?” Thup looked up with droopy eyes at his older brother.

“Hot.” Singha tapped the back of his hand lightly on the forehead of the kid in front of him. That eager look in his eyes after hearing the reply was truly annoying. “But I’ll shower alone.”

“Young man, I am going to sleep now.”

“Thank you, Auntie, I’ll finish cleaning up and then go to bed.”

“Oh, don’t bother, just leave it. I will clean up later.”

“It’s okay.” Singha smiled politely before starting to stack the dishes to take them to wash.

“Just put them by the sink for me, dear, I’ll wash them myself.”

“Yes.” Singha complied with that by placing the dishes where Auntie Noi instructed, then came back to gather the trash into bags and set them aside, and dragged the good-for-nothings to sleep in their proper places. Every action and movement was under the watchful eyes of the young man, who was swaying back and forth while hugging a stuffed toy to his chest. “Go to your room and sleep, Thup.”

“I want to sleep with you, Phii.”

Singha paused, his hand lifting a jar to align it against the wall for safety of the drunk folks, before he crouched down in front of Thup.

“You want to sleep with me?”

    “Uh-huh.” Thup nodded eagerly.

“Then go wait in the room.” The young man sprang up immediately and ran to the bedroom, leaving behind his older brother who chuckled softly with affection.

Singha didn’t take long to tidy up the remnants of the drinking session, restoring it to its pristine condition. He carried Darin to her own room to ensure his friend wouldn’t kick anyone in her sleep, as per her habit. Once everything was settled, Singha entered the room to grab his shower supplies and towel. Initially, he thought Thup would’ve fallen asleep after waiting for a short while, but when he opened the door, he found the kid still waiting, albeit with drooping eyes.

    “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”

    “Hot.”

“How hot?” Singha walked over and sat in front of the kid whose cheeks were flushed, eyes glistening with a shiny, teary look.

“Very hot…” Thup placed his stuffed toy beside him before cupping Singha’s face in his hands. “I like you a lot, too.”

“I want… want to kiss you, Phii.”

    “And what else?”

“Not sure.” Thup gently stroked Singha’s cheek with his thumb.

“Are you sure that’s all you want?” The charming face moved closer, wanting to see the person in front of him more clearly, but his vision was too blurry. “Just know that I want to stay with you… don’t want to be chased away.”

    “I’m not chasing you away.”

“Mhm, you told me to behave so I could stay.”

“And have you been a good boy?”

“I’ve been your good boy.” Thup teased with the tip of his nose, rubbing it back and forth against the other’s nose.

“Then come get your reward.” Singha pressed his lips onto the soft lips. No, it was clear this kid had almost no experience; the awkward kiss made him smile with affection before he gently nibbled on the soft lip. “Good boy, open your mouth.”

Thup opened his lips as instructed, the new sensation in his mouth and the slight bitterness made his heart pound so hard it almost escaped. His tongue was cornered, left to allow the person in front to lead. Unconsciously, his flailing hands settled on the waist.

Time passed, but Thup didn’t want to stop at all. Even feeling like he was out of breath, he didn’t want to pause for a second.

    “Breathe first.”

As the lips parted, Thup opened his eyes to look, Singha’s face less than a handspan away. He saw his reflection in those midnight-colored eyes; that kiss really had him forgetting to breathe.

    “How was it?”

    “A bit bitter.”

    “Must be the cigarettes.”

    “Can I kiss you again?”

“This time, I’ll let you do it.” Singha pressed his lips against Thup’s once again. This time, he let the young man slide his tongue in. Thup was quick to learn, but he hadn’t expected to learn about this. The hand on his waist started to squeeze and knead, eliciting a smile from Singha.

Singha straddled Thup’s waist before leaning the young man down onto the bed, their lips still locked in a tangled dance. Singha slipped his hand into Thup’s bothersome t-shirt, pulling it up to reveal his smooth, pale chest.

“Raise your arms.” Thup obeyed easily. Seeing Singha straddling him made him feel like he could die right there, his midsection aching to the point he had to moan softly in his throat.

Those sparkling eyes didn’t miss the gaze of the one on top. Singha began to grind his hips down onto the bulging fabric of Thup’s three-quarter pants, which he had complained about all night.

    “Ph… Phii Singha.”

    “What?”

“I… I…” Thup swallowed his words as he saw the older man take off his shirt with one arm. The tiger tattoo on his arm looked as fierce as ever. His chest and abs were tight, down to the beautiful V-line. Seeing that tanned, smooth skin drove him nearly mad.

    “What about you?”

“I feel like I’m going to die.”

“Die now or do something else first?” Singha leaned down to kiss and nibble at Thup’s neck, dragging his tongue down to his white chest. Every lick and gentle bite made Thup twitch, often drawing laughter from the one doing it so well. “Choose.”

“Ph… Phii, ugh, Phii Singha, no… not dying. Not dying anymore.” Thup raised his head, watching the person who now moved down to kiss repeatedly at his lower belly.

    “Continue?”

“I like you, I like you a lot.”

“So, that means continue, right?” Singha used his mouth to pull down the zipper of the pants. The bulge in the white underwear caught his attention significantly.

Thup covered his face with both hands, his face flushed with heat, his hardened core feeling like it was about to explode. Dizziness started to take over, making Thup lift his head, though he wanted to see the older man’s face almost desperately. Once freed from his pants, Singha looked at it for a while before placing his hand on it to tease until there was a glistening drop at the tip.

    “Not bad.”

    “Ph… Phii, it’s uncomfortable.”

“And what do you want me to do?” Singha said while stroking the young man’s core, who was lying there, “What do you want, good boy?”

“Ple… Please help, ugh, Phii Singha, help me, will you?”

“What will you give in return?”

    “Anything, ah, anything at all.”

Singha raised his eyebrows before giving a satisfied smile. He removed his hand and leaned his face close to what was now proudly standing, then ran his tongue along its length to the tip. His hot, moist tongue circled the head before enveloping it with his thick lips, stroking up and down, eliciting soft moans from the boy lying there.

    “Phii Singha, ugh.”

Singha moved up and down in a slow, deliberate rhythm; the suction and his tongue swirling around made Thup shudder with pleasure, inadvertently thrusting his hips to gently hit the roof of the older man’s mouth. Singha glanced up slightly before slapping the white thigh, then punished him by increasing the speed of his lips and giving a gentle bite.

“Phii Singha. I, ah. I’m going to…” Before he could finish his sentence, his core, now in Singha’s mouth, released a thick, white fluid that overflowed from the corner of his mouth.

Singha swallowed every drop before wiping away the love fluid that flowed out, unconcerned. He looked at Thup, who was panting heavily, with affection. When the young man opened his eyes to look at the older man, he felt like everything was spinning as if he was on a roller coaster.

    “You can sleep now.”

Seeing that Singha was about to get up, Thup grabbed the older man’s hand and pulled him back towards himself. Singha furrowed his brow at the impact as he fell onto Thup, jarring to his wound. The soft sobbing made him look up.

“Hic, does it hurt, Phii? I… I’m sorry, hic, I’m really sorry.”

Singha rolled his eyes because this kid had just started crying. When he’s not drunk, he cries easily anyway. When he’s drunk, it’s even worse.

“No need to cry, I’m not hurt.”

“I, hic. I made you hurt.”

“If you know it’s not good, then be gentle next time.”

“Hic, uh, I’ll be gentle.” Thup nodded vigorously until Singha had to lean down to kiss his smooth forehead, then down to his pronounced nose bridge and both beautiful eyes, his cheeks blushing as his older brother nuzzled him for a while before reaching his full lips which they had kissed countless times tonight.

“Sweet dreams, you little pup.” Singha pulled away before walking out of the room. He looked down at himself, still pushing against his branded pants.

“It’s not small like you, huh?”

After spending over half an hour in the bathroom, Singha returned to the bedroom, where the good kid had already fallen asleep, wearing only his pants. Singha found pajamas in Thup’s bag and changed him into them so he could sleep more comfortably. Once everything was done, he lay down beside him, slowly closing his eyes until he drifted into sleep.

Inside the room, the even breathing of two people sleeping next to each other in the deep night sounded, as if it was a habit or an attraction that turned separate sleeping into moving into each other’s embrace eventually. Thup used to have insomnia due to paranoia. And Singha often had nightmares that woke him up in the middle of the night frequently, but lately, they had been sleeping soundly as long as the other was beside them, even if neither realized it.

The crowing of a rooster welcoming a new day woke Thup up with a headache that felt like his head might explode. Memories slowly flowed back into his mind. He remembered meeting his mother, bringing back her bones, going to the temple fair with Phii Singha, and upon returning home, Phii Merk and Phii Charn told him to try some drink, then they started chatting and drinking with him. After that…

“What happened after that?” Thup tried hard to think, starting to see vague images in his head. He saw Phii Singha… saw Phii Singha doing…

Thup sat up and looked around the room. The bed was empty, making him wonder if he had dreamt it all. He stumbled towards the door, but before he could reach for the handle, it opened. The person standing there made Thup blush, his heart beating out of rhythm.

    “Surprised?”

    “N… No. You’re up early.”

“Just checking on the drunks.” Singha leaned against the door frame and handed Thup a cup of coffee. “Got a headache?”

    “Y… Yes.”

“Then drink this. Aunt made breakfast, it’s in the kitchen. You can eat when your headache is gone, then take a shower. We’re going to the temple.”

    “Last night…”

    “What about last night?”

“Phii Singha…” Thup averted his eyes, shaking his head until his hair was even messier than before. “Nothing.”

The young man watched the back of the older man, clad in a black tank top, walk away. He remembered the touch, the warmth, the voice, the look in his eyes—everything. But he just wasn’t sure if it was all real.

The youngest in the house walked dejectedly to the bathroom, leaving the newly awakened drunks puzzled.

    “What’s up with him?”

“Last night, after we got back from the temple fair, he was still laughing like crazy.” Charn said, rubbing his eyes.

“It’s because you got him drunk, idiot. A kid, just one shot and he’s out.” Merk said, pulling the toothbrush from his mouth, toothpaste foam splattering around.

“Sorry about that.” Charn sighed, making an apologetic face. “Gross, go brush properly.”

“Which dog threw up on me this morning? So clean, huh?”

“Shut up.” Say used a nearby pillow to smack both of them before getting up and walking back to his bedroom.

Thup was standing in front of the bathroom mirror with a downcast look. If last night was just a dream, it would have been a good one for him. But if it wasn’t, why was Phii Singha acting like nothing happened?

“Sigh.” The young man sighed resignedly before taking off his shirt to get ready for a shower, but then his reflection in the mirror made Thup pause.

    It wasn’t a dream… Last night wasn’t a dream!!

Because if it were, there wouldn’t be these red love marks all over his body like this. Shoulders, chest, stomach, and lower abdomen, everywhere was covered with kiss and bite marks. Thup quickly put his shirt back on and ran out of the bathroom in a panic.

    “Phii Singha!!!”

Singha turned to look at the excited kid standing at the kitchen door, a smirk forming on his lips as if the kid had just discovered a gift. Thup gave the older man a wide smile before running back to the bathroom. Meanwhile, Singha went out to help Uncle Chai fix the car outside, leaving Charn and Merk confused, exchanging puzzled looks.

“Why did he call out and then not say anything?” Charn started to ask.

“And why get so excited just calling Singha?”

    “There’s something fishy about this—”

    “A secret.”

“How do you know what I was going to say?”

“I looked into your eyes and…”

    “Was it a sweet moment?”

“I looked into your eyes and saw the mischief in there.”

“Complimenting me like that, I’m getting shy, Khun Merk.”

“If it’s a compliment for you, Charn, then consider your mind still dirty, huh?” Both smiled at each other before parting ways to attend to their own business.

After getting through the morning chaos, everyone gathered at an old temple in the area. All seven, including Uncle-Chai and Charn, came to pay their respects. Inside the chapel, Thup placed his mother’s bones in front of the Buddha statue, in a pose of Maraviyaja. Then Uncle-Chai helped guide the religious ceremony and together they made merit dedications until everything was completed.

“Are you sure you want to bury the bones here?” Uncle-Chai asked, gently patting the shoulder of the one he considered a nephew.

“Yes, I think Mom would like the frangipani flowers.”

“Then I’ll go get a hoe for you.”

“Thank you, Uncle.” Thup said, gently touching the cloth bundle that had been perfumed with scented water and sprinkled with jasmine flowers, now held close to his chest. He then walked out of the chapel to the spot where he would bury the bones.

“Wait up.” Singha said, unable to resist following Thup out, watching his solitary figure.

They stopped under a frangipani tree within the temple grounds. Thup used to play here often because he loved its scent. He never thought his return would be for this. Slowly, he began to dig with the hoe, with the older man watching nearby. Once the hole was deep enough, Thup placed his mother’s bone bundle into it.

“Mom, it’s nice and cool here. Not hot at all. I think you’d like the smell of these frangipani flowers, so I brought you here. In the mornings and evenings, you’ll hear the monks chanting.” Thup said, smiling into the emptiness. “Oh, I forgot to introduce, this is Phii Singha.”

Singha walked over, sat next to Thup, and gently patted the young man’s head.

    “Hello, Auntie.”

“Phii Singha has been taking care of me all the time. I am very lucky to meet good people. I had the abbot, Uncle Chai and Aunt Noi, Phii Singha, and his mom… that’s enough.” For him, this was more than enough. He had a mother who was everything to him. A mother who loved him even when she was no longer alive. That was sufficient, complete without needing a father.

“I’ll take care of him.” Singha’s words made Thup look at his companion immediately. “This kid isn’t hard to look after. I can handle it.”

Thup reached out to the older man, and their palms met, clasped tightly together, leaving no space between them.

“Sleep well, Mom, and one day we will meet again.” Thup slowly shoveled dirt into the grave until it was full, just like the void in his heart that was now filled.

A gentle breeze passed by Thup and Singha, as if acknowledging this farewell.

    “Shall we go?”

“Yes, let’s go.” The two walked out without letting go of each other’s hands.

Thup didn’t know if his mother was real or not. He didn’t know what she looked like, whether she was a ghost or angel as told in stories, or if she would look like a creature animal. But for Thup, the person who had been with him since birth, watching over him, helping from afar, and always wishing him well, that person was not a foster mother but his real mother.
